Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed November 21,1903. Serial No. 182,192.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. OSBORNE, a citizen of the United States, resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Cheese-Gutters; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to cheese cutters, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A, designates a base frame, a rotary table B, adapted to carry the cheese and resting upon supporting lugs a, of said base, the cheese being weighed ,before being placed upon the table A. In order to rotate the table and cheese to cut the desired amount of cheese at each stroke of the knife, the following means are provided.
0, is a horizontally working handle lever for rotating the table B, such lever being intermediately pivoted to an inner eccentric extension of the base frame at one side thereof intermediate of its forward and rear portions at c, and extending across and beyond the opposite side of said frame, upon which it rests, and underneath the table, said lever terminating at its free end in a handle portion.
D, is a crown wheel secured to the underside of the table B, a block E, carried by the rear end portion of said lever, or at the end of its short work arm and working in a slot 0 thereof, embracing said crown wheel, and carrying a spring pawl device e, which has an engagement with the teeth e, of the crown wheel to rotate the table B, upon movement of said lever in one direction to an extent corresponding to the movement of the lever, but upon movement of said lever in the opposite direction slipping over said teeth without effect in rotating the table,0wing to the frictional engagement of the table with supportinglugs a. This lever works in connection with a series of cheese total weight graduations F, marked upon the rim of the frame A. A fixed stop f, limits the movement of the lever in one direction, while a movable stop f, removably engaging the base frame opposite the graduations F, limits the extent of movement. The proper position of adjustable stop f, is previously calculated so that a piece of cheese of predetermined weight will It will be understood that the stroke of the lever is determined by the total weight of the cheese, each full stroke measuring off, say one-quarter pound, so that the heavier the cheese the shorter will be the stroke of the lever; hence the necessity of making one of the stops adjustable along a total-weight scale.
It will be observed that an important advantage is derived by pivoting the operating lever at a point considerably beyond the center of the table from the side at which the handle-end of the lever projects. This arrangement gives an augmented throw of the handle portion or that portion which works along the scale plate; that is, for a given movement of the table the projecting portion of the lever will move farther and faster than the periphery of the table; this enables me to use a scale having larger graduations, t'. e., graduations set farther apart than would be the case were the lever pivoted at or near the center of the table so as to rotate in unison with it. Where the lever is pivoted at or near the center it necessarily travels the same distance as the table to measure off a given quantity of cheese, so that particularly when a heavy cheese is being measured off and a comparatively small piece of cheese only is desired the movement of the table will be necessarily comparatively slight, as the slice must be cut comparatively thin; this, as is obvious, will require, to attain the necessary accuracy, that a very fine scale be used and that all lost motion may be eliminated and that the clutch shall operate with a great degree of accuracy. But by giving the lever or that part of it which works in conjunction with the scale an augmented throw a much greater degreeof accuracy is obtainable with a given degree of skill and care in the construction of the table-operating devices.
Referring now to the cutting means, G, is the knife blade carried by knife lever G, pivoted to base frame A, just outside of the rear edge of the same between extensions g, thereof. The knife when lowered, terminates at the center of the cheese table occupying the rear half thereof, and the knife lever is provided with an upward or vertical handle extension at the inner upper edge of said knife. Or the knife lever may be extended forward beyond said knife, and provided with a horizontal handle portion over the forward end of the table.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as -new, and desire to secure by Letters Patens, is:
1. In a cheese cutter, the combination of a base frame having a cheese total scale at one side thereof, a rotary table, a table rotating lever projecting at its forward end over said scale and pivoted to the opposite side of said frame from said scale, an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of said lever over said scale, and an automatic intermittent grip device at the rear end portion of said lever for rotating the table, substantially as specified.
2. In a cheese cutter, the combination of abase frame having a cheese total weight scale having total weight graduations for different cheeses at one side thereof, a ro-,
tary table having an annular series of teeth, a table rotating lever projecting at itsforward end over said scale and pivoted to the opposite side of said frame from said scale, an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of said lever over said scale, and means at the rear end portion of said lever for engagement with the teeth of said table, substantially as specified.
3. In a computing cheese cutter, the combination with a base having a side fulcrum lug, a cheese table and a cutting means, of a cheese total scale having total weight graduations for different cheeses, table moving means including a horizontally-working table-rotating lever pivoted to said side fulcrum lug of the base and provided with a handle at the opposite side thereof from said lug, and means operating in connection with said scale for adjusting the operation of said table moving means, substantially as specified.
4. In a cheese cutter, the combination of a base frame and a rotary table mounted thereon, a vibrating operating lever working under the table and pivoted to the base frame at a point to one side of the center and projecting beyond the table at the opposite side of the center, a total weight scale for cheeses of different weights carried by the base along which the projecting end of said lever works. and a table-engaging device slidably mounted on the lever.
5. In a cheese cutter, the combination of a base frame and a rotary table mounted thereon, a vibrating operating lever working under the table and pivoted to the base frame at a point to one side of the center and projecting beyond the table at the opposite side of the center, a table engaging device movably mounted on the lever, a pair of limiting stops for said lever, one of said stops being ad- -justable to vary the stroke of the lever for the dilterent weights of cheese, and a total weight scale carried by the base along which the projecting end of said lever works.
6. In a cheese cutter, the combination of a base frame and a rotary table mounted thereon, a clutch for engaging the table and actuating it, a lever under the table for actuating said clutch, this clutch being slidably mounted on the lever this lever being pivoted at one side of the cen ter of the table and having a handle portion projecting beyond the table at the other side thereof, whereby the projecting part ofthe handle shall have an augmented throw. adjustable stops between which the lever works to limit its throw, and a total weight scale plate along which the projecting part of the lever moves, for the purpose set forth.
7. 111 a cheese cutter, the combination of a, base frame and a rotary table mounted thereon, a vibratable lever extending under the table and having a iixed fulcrum at one side of the base and extending across the center to a point beyond the other side of the table, means actuated by this lever for rotating the table, said means being movable on the lever a total weight scale along which the projecting end of the lever works, a pair of stops between which the lever works, one of said stops being adjustable along the scale, whereby the projecting end of the lover or that part which works between the stops shall have an augmented throw, thereby permitting the employment of a scale hav ing larger graduations.
S. In a computing cheese-cutter, the combination of a base and a rotary table mounted thereon, a, vibralablc lever extending under the table and having a lixed fulcrum at one side of the base and extending thence across to a point beyond the other side of the table, means actuated by this lever for rotating the table, said means being radially movable and having connection with the lever, and totulaveight scale means for controlling and varying the movement of the lever in accordance with the different weights of cheeses.

In a computing cheese-cutter, the combination of a base and a rotary table mounted thereon, a, vibratable lever fulcrumed on the base, a table engaging device connecting the lever with the table, and a total-weight scale and an adjustable stop thereon for varying the throw of the lever in accordance with dillferent weights of cheeses.
