and I do hereby declare the 4following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to locks for elevator'` cars, and has or its object the provision of a convenient and safe meansengaging the operating hand cable of an elevator so as to prevent movement oi the elevator car or the said cable by persons at a different oor than that at which the elevator car is so stopped.`
It consists of the constructions, combinations and arrangements o parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l, is a side elevation oi my said invention. Fig. 2, is a plan view of a modified form thereof. Fig. 3, is a horizontal sectional view ot said invention on the line A-B of Fig. l ,showing also the cable in broken lines, in locked position.
In the drawings l is a portion o an elevator car 2 is a hand cable for operating the elevator, 3 and 4 are collars spaced a short distance apart and secured to said cable and stationary with respect thereto. Secured to said elevator car in any suitable manner, as, for example, preferably, by the standard la erected upon and secured to the floor o said car, and the screw or bolt lb is abracket comprising the parallel or nearly parallel arms 6 and 7 and the Ienlarged loop portion 8. Extending from one of said arms as for example the arm 7 is the supplemenf tary bracket 9, upon which is supported a bolt l0 bev- Nefd'at its forward end as at l0EL and adapted in operative position, to extend across, or nearly across the space between said arms and in retracted position to recede upon said bracket-,Q to clear or approximately clear said space. Said supplientary bracket is preferably cylindrical. Behind said bolt is positioned an extension spring l1 adapted to bear against a suitable relatively xed abutment as, for example, the screw cap l2 and to bear at its opposite end against said bolt to force said bolt across the space between said bars. ior example, the arm 7, is a lever/13, which is adapted at one end to engage said bolt to retract it in opposition to said spring, and extending from said lever is a handle portion oi any suitable iormfas the handle 13a. Said cable extends through said loop 8, which is of sufficient diameter to permit of the free passage through it of said cable and collars, but the arms 6 and 7 are only spaced suciently far apart to permit of the passage of the cable between them and are a bar to the passage between them of said collars. Similar pairs of said collars are preferably located on said cable opposite or near the several floors of the building within which the elevator or car is operated, and in such position with relation to said bracket and floors as that when said arms extend on either side oi the cable and between the members of any pair oi said collars said elevator car will be in discharging or receiving position at one of the iioors of said building.

that it can not be pulled to hoist the elevator (according to the use to which said cable may be put), the operator sways said cable out oi the vertical line and against the beveled edge of said bolt, causing it to wedge back said bolt and to pass beyond the same into space between the arms 6 and 7 said operator taking care to sway against said bolt the portion o the cable which extends between the members 0i a pair o said collars, so that one oi said collars will closely approach said arms above the same and the other oi said collars will closely approach said arms below the same. After the passagethereby of said cable, said bolt is shot forward by said spring to prevent the escape of said cable into said loop, and any material upward or downward movement of either the cable-or the'car will be prevented by said arms and collars. To release said cable into said loop, the lever 13 is operated to retract said bolt, whereupon the cable springs out into the loop, or may be drawn out into the same, and maythen be operated as a valve-controlling cable or as a hoisting cable, as the case' may be.
What I claim is g 1. In an elevator car lock, the combination with the elevator car and operating hand cable, of a bracket comprising two approximately parallel arms` and one enlarged loop portion secured to said elevator car, a bolt extending in operative position across the space between said arms, yielding means for holdingsaid bolt in operative position and adapted to permit the retraction of said bolt, means for retracting said bolt, said loop portion being positioned so as to partly encircle said cable when the cable is in normal position for operation, a pair of collars secured to said cable and spaced a short distance apart and adapted to pass through said loop portion when said cable is in operative position, said collars being adapted respectively 2, In an elevator car lock, the combination with an ele-t vator car and operating hand cable therefor of two arms secured to said car and adapted to extend on opposite sides of said cable when said cable is swayed between them from its normal position, a bolt extending in operative position across the space between said arms, a pair of collars secured to said cable and spaced a short distance apart and adapted respectively when the part of said cable between said collars is swayed out of normal position and past the bolt and into the space between said arms, to extend transversely across said arms.
