To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT E. AYER, of Chelsea, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, and AMBRosE S. VosE, of Brookline, county of Norfolk, in said State, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Trimming the Edges of Boots and Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to a machine for trimming the edges of boots and shoes and is herein shown as embodied in a machine for trimming the edges of the soles of boots and shoes.
The invention is an improvement upon machines of this class, wherein a bed for the work to rest against is connected with the shaft to rotate therewith yet is adjustable or movable radially with relation to said shaft.
One feature of the present invention consists in novel means as will be described for connecting the bed with the shaft, whereby loose connections and noise or rattle attendant thereon are avoided.
Another feature of the invention consists in providing for lateral movement of the bed, so as to permit it to automatically center or adjust itself to the cutter shaft when the machine is set in motion, thereby avoiding binding or clamping of the bed, and also avoiding loss of time in adjusting the bed with relation to the cutter shaft, while permitting the bed to be adjusted laterally with relation to theknives or cutters to uncover more or less of the'same when it is desired to obtain a side cut.
These and other features of this invention will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

Referring to the drawings a represents a cutter shaft supported in bearings in the upright frame b. The cutter shaft a is rotated from a driving shaft 0 by means of a belt d. The cutter shaft a has fast on it a cutter head 2 provided with a plurality of cutters or knives f radially disposed with relation to the cutter head and shaft. The parts thus described are and may be of any suitable or usual construction. The cutter head e has co-operating with it a bed to support the work, and which consists of an annular rim .9 connected by an inclined rim h to a larger annular rim i, said rims being provided with suitable slots 9' into which the knives or cutters project, as represented in Fig. 3. The rim '5 is attached to a sleeve m extended through and supported by a bearing 1!. in which said sleeve is free to rotate. The sleeve m is of larger diameter than the shaft 11 so as to permit movement of the sleeve radially with relation to the shaft to uncover more or less of the cutters or knives f.
The present invention has for one of its objects to effect a connection of the sleeve m with the shaft a, in such manner that the sleeve is positively connected with the shaft so as to cause the sleeve to rotate therewith and yet permit it to move radially with relation to said shaft. The positive connection referred to may be accomplished as herein shown bya gimbal joint comprising an inner member or ring 10 (see Figs. 4 and 6) provided with substantially diametrically opposite pivot studs or pins 12, upon which an outer member or ring 13 is mounted to turn, said outer member having substantially diametrically opposite pivot pins or studs 14, which are arranged substantially at right angles to the pivot studs or pins 12. The pivot studs or pins 14 i have mounted upon them a collar 16' fastened as by a set screw 17 (see Fig. 4) to the rear end of the sleeve m, so i that practically the sleeve m is mounted to turn on the pivot pins or studs 14. The inner member or ring 10 is connected with the shaft a so as to rotate therewith, and in the present instance so as to move longitudinally thereon, and for this purpose said inner member or ring is provided with a stud or projection 20, which extends into a longitudinal slot 21 in the shaft a.
From the above description it will be seen that the sleeve m and its attached bed e are positively connected with the shaft 0. so as to rotate therewith, while at the same time they are capable of being moved radially with relation to said shaft in two directions substantially at right angles to each other, the sleeve when moved in a lateral or substantially horizontal direction turning on the pivot studs or pins, which are in a vertical position, and when moved in a vertical direction, said sleeve and ring turn on the pivot studs or pinswhich are in a horizontal position. These movements of the sleeve and its attached bed may be effected while the machine is in operation, and may be positively effected in both instances, or as herein shown the vertical movement may be positively effected by the operator, while the lateral movement may be automatically efiected by centrifugal action, inasmuch as the bearing box n in which the sleeve m rotates is supported by a yoke 25 which is pivotally mounted on a screw 26, extended into a threaded socket in a vertically movable slide block 27 and secured against rotation by the set screw 28 (see Fig. 4).
The slide block 27 is movable in suitable guideways in vertical arms 29 attached to a slide bar 30, movable horizontally in guideways in a block 31 which is secured to the frame of the machine, the said block being detachably secured to the said framework by bolts or screws 32 (see Fig. 1).
The bed g and its sleeve m may be moved radially in a Vertical direction to uncover more or less of the cutters or knives, by means of a thumb screw-33 which engages a threaded socket in the slide block 27, and said bed and sleeve may be moved longitudinally of the shaft a by means of the thumb screw 34, which engages a threaded socket in the slide bar 30. The bed and sleeve are also capable of being automatically moved longitudinally on the shaft to compensate for uneven thickness in the work, and against the action of a spring 36, which serves to keep the bed in proper position with relation to the knives or cutters Provision may be made for limiting the vertical movement of the sleeve and its attached bed, which may be accomplished as shown in Fig. 3 by a stud or pin 38 on the slide bar 27 co-operating with and movable between fingers 39, 40 on a plate 41 secured to one of the guide arms 29 for said bar.
The operation of the apparatus may be readily understood by reference to the drawings and especially Figs. 3 and 4, for when the shaft 0. is set in rotation as by moving the driving belt 42 from the loose pulley 43 onto the fast pulley 44, the sleeve in and its attached bed, against the underside of which the work is usually held by the operator, are rotated with said shaft. As soon as the shaft a and the sleeve in are set in rotation, the latter automatically centers itself with relation to the shaft a by centrifugal action, which it is permitted to do by reason of the supporting yoke 25 for the box 16 being free to turn on its pivot 26, and the sleeve m being free to turn on the vertical pivot pins, thereby avoiding binding or cramping of the sleeve and its attached bed.
While the machine is in operation, the operator by turning the thumb-screw 33, can turn the sleeve in a vertical plane with the horizontal pivot pins as a center, thereby causing the bed 9 to uncover more or less of the knives to effect a deeper or less cut in the edge of the sole.
By positively connecting the sleeve m with the shaft a so as to rotate therewith and yet permit of radial movement thereof, loose connections, and the noise attending them in a rapidly running machine, are avoided.
We have herein shown one construction of machine embodying this invention but it is not desired to limit the invention to the particular construction shown.
Claims.
1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a cutter head fast thereon, a plurality of cutters extended from the periphery of said head, a bed provided with slots into which said cutters extend, a sleeve of larger diameter than said shaft and to which said bed is connected, a bearing in which said sleeve is mounted to turn, a gimbal joint connecting said sleeve with said shaft to cause said bed to rotate with said shaft and yet permit radial movement of the bed with relation to said shaft, and means to effect movement of said sleeve radially with relation to said shaft while the latter is in rotation, substantially as described.
2. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a cutter head fast thereon, a plurality of cutters extended from the periphery of said head, a bed provided with slots into which said cutters extend, a sleeve of larger diameter than said shaft and to which said bed is connected, a bearing in which said sleeve is mounted to turn, an outer ring to which said sleeve is pivotally connected, an inner ring to which said outer ring is pivoted substantially at right angles to the pivot for said sleeve, means to connect said inner ring with said shaft to cause the inner ring and the parts connected with it to rotate with said shaft, a pivoted support for said bearing, and means for moving said bearing radially with relation to said shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a cutter head fast thereon, a plurality oi cutters extended from the periphery of said head, :1 bed provided with slots into which said cutters extend, a sleeve of larger diameter than said shaft and to which said bed is connected, :1 bearing in which said sleeve is mounted to turn, an outer ring to which said sleeve is pivotally connected, an inner ring keyed to the cutter shaft to rotate therewith and to move longitudinally thereon and to which said outer ring is pivoted substantially at right angles to the pivot for said sleeve, a pivoted support for said bearing, and means for moving said bearing radially with relation to said shaft, substantially as described.
4. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a cutter'carried thereby and projecting therefrom at an angle thereto, a bed co-operating with and projected into the path of movement of said cutter to support the work while being acted upon by said cutter and connected with said shaft to rotate therewith, and a pivoted support for said bed to permit suid bed to antomatically center itself with relation to said shaft when the latter is set in rotation, substantially as described.
5. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a cutter or knife carried thereby, a bed for the work to rest against, and means to positively connect said bed with said shaft to cause the bed to rotate with the shaft and yet permit it to be moved radially with relation thereto, and a pivoted support for said bed to permit said bed to be automatically moved radially with relation to said shaft, substantially as described.
6. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a cutter fast thereon, a bed cooperating with said cutter, a sleeve of larger diameter than said shaft to which said bed is secured, means to connect said sleeve with said shaft to rotate therewith and to permit movement radially thereto, a bearing in which said sleeve is mounted to turn, means to eiTect movement of said bearing and sleeve radially with relation to said shaft, and means to limit the radial movement of said bearing and sleeve to prevent contact of said sleeve with said shaft, substantially as described.
7. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a rotatable shaft, a cutter or knife carried thereby, a bed for the work to rest against, a sleeve of greater diameter than said shaft mounted thereon and to which said bed is secured, means to positively connect said sleeve with said shaft to cause the bed to rotate with the shaft and yet permit it to be moved radially with relation thereto, and a pivoted bearing in which said sleeve rotates, substantially as described.
