LEATHER-SKIVING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,208, dated October 28, 1890.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. TEwKs- BURY, of Haverhill, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Leather-Skiving Machines, of which the following descriptiomin connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its obj ect -to improve the construction of leather skiving machin es-such, for instance, as shown in United States Patent No. 273,931, granted to Christopher Amazeen March 13, 1883-and has special reference to the provision of novel grinding devices for the knife.
My invention consists in the combination, with the knife of the skivin'g-machine, of two grinding-disks or a single grinding-disk having agrooved periphery and means for adj usting the said grinder and knife simultaneously; also, in the particular means herein shown for adjusting the grinder and knife and in novel means for operating the various mechanisms or co-operative parts of the machine independently.

The feed-rollA,secured to the shaft a, having its bearingsin the main frame-work D of the machine, the feed-disk B, secured to the shaft b, having its bearings in the bracket or armsvb of the frame-work, the revolving cutter C, secured to the shaft c, having its bearings in the frame c', the guide E, and presser N are all as shown in the patent referred to.
A pulley a is secured to the shaft ct, by which it is revolved. A pulley h2 is secured to the shaft b, by which it is revolved, and a pulley c2 is secured to the shaft c, by which it is revolved, said pulleys being connected byindependent belts to a counter-shaft, thereby omitting a large number of gears and shafts now commonly used on the machine.
The grinding mechanism consists of two abrasive disks e e', one of which has a feathered or chamfered edge to thereby present an annular 'groove or race for the cutter C, al-
though in lieu thereof it is obvious that a single abrasive disk may be formed with an annular groove. The disks e e are secured to a shaft e2, having its bearings in aframe c3, secured to a bolt or stud e4, passing through aslot in the arm or frame of the machine, to
which bolt or stud the frame or arm c', carry-` ing the cutter, is also secured. The bolt or stud e4, bearing both frames, has on 1t a washer @20, having a pointed bearlng-face formed by slabbing off or chamfering at eachkV side, (see Fig. 4,) such pointed face permitting the washer to rock as the frames are moved. The washer has a pin 2, which enters a groove in the bolt or stud, which serves to maintain the position of the washer on the bolt, a nut o being employed to force the washer against the frame of the machine. By this construction it will be seen that the grinding disk or disks and the knife are simultaneously adjustable with relation to the other partsi. e., whenever one is moved the other is correspondingly moved.
To move the knife and grinder simultaneously, as described, I have but to turn the screw c1@ to move the frame c on the `hingeconnection lor to loosen the bolt o2 and turn the frames c e3 on the pivot or stud e4. The cutter and grinder are then moved simultaneously in a vertical are, whereby their angle is changed and different bevel or bevels at various' angles are obtained. As it is desirable to have the grinding-disks act sometimes upon one and sometimes upon the other side of the cutter C, it is herein shown as vertically adjustable for this purpose. The means shown for accomplishing such vertical adjustment consists of a screw e5, turning in the arm or bracket e3, said screw passing through a block e6, which embraces the shaft e2 between the anges e7 thereof, so that by turning the screw c5 by means of the hand-wheel e8 the said block e6 will be raised and lowered. In practice the grinding-disks e e are normally held in such Vposition with relation to the cutter that the latter is not acted upon; but when it is desired to grind the cutter they are either raised or lowered, depending on which side of the cutter it is desired to act. rThe pulleye9 is secured to the shaft e2, by which itis revolved.
I claimm IOO 1. In a leather-skiving machine, a Work support and frame carrying both a revoluble circular cutter and grinder, and a horizontal pivot upon Which said frame turns, so that said cutter and grinder may be moved simultaneously in a vertical arc with relation to the Work-support, substantially as described.
2. In a leather-skiving machine, a circular cutter and frame or arm carrying it, agrinder and a frame or arm carrying it., and a connecting bolt or stud for connecting the said frames or arms, whereby simultaneous movement of the cutter and grinder is effected horizontally and vertically, substantially as described.
3. In a leather-skiving machine, the combination, with the circular cutter C and means for revolving it, of the grinding-disks e e', one of Which has a chamfered edge formed to present an annular groove to receive the edge of the cutter C, and a revoluble shaft carrying said grinding-disks, substantially as described.
4. In a leather-skiving machine, the revolving cutter C and grinding-disks, one of which has a chamfered edge formed to present an annular groove to receive the edge of the cutter C, combined With a revoluble shaft carrying the grinding-disks and the pivoted arm supporting said shaft, substantially as described. y
5. In a leather-skiving machine, the grinding-disks carried by a revoluble shaft, the re- Volvingcutter C and movable frame carrying it intermediate said disks and means, substantially as described, for vertically adjusting said shaft, having its bearings in said frame to present one or the other of the surfaces of the cutter to the disks, substantially as andfor the purpose set forth.
6. In a leather-skiving machine, pivoted frames carrying the cutter and grinder, and the grooved connecting bolt or stud upon which both of said frames rock, combined with the pointed or tilting Washer, substantially as described.
