Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Leveling Chairs, Tables, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention pertains to improvements in machines for leveling or truing the .legs of chairs, tables and the like, the construction and advantages of which will be hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the annexed drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the preferred form of the machine; Fig. 2 a top plan view thereof, a portion of the bed being broken away or omitted; Fig. 3, a top plan view of a portion of the bed, showing a modified form of construction; Fig. 4, a vertical sectional View, taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 3; and Fig. 5, a similar view, taken on the. line 5-5, of Fig. 2. j

The object of the invention is to provide a simple device by means of which the le s of a chair or table may be brought to a uni orm length, or leveled.

In the form of the apparatus shown in Figs 1, 2 and 5, A designates a bed, mounted upon suitable legs or supports B, the bed being of such dimensions as to support a chair or table, the legs of which are to be leveled or brought to a length which will cause the chair or table to set evenly. The upper face of the bed is plane or smooth and is provided, adjacent to one corner or end thereof, with an opening 0 for the reception of a circular saw which lies in a horizontal plane and flush with the upper face of the bed. The opening is providedwith an extension designated by D, adaptedand designed to receive the tableleg which is to be out off, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The saw is carried by a vertically-disposed arbor E, which is mounted in a casting or bracket F, the lower end thereof being supported by an adjustable stepped bearing G. Motion is imparted to the saw by a bevel-pinion H and intermeshing bevel-gear I, which latter is mounted upon a drlve-shaft J, the latter carrying a band-wheel K. Any form of drive may be employed, and the saw mounted in any manner, so long as it lies in a plane substantially flush with the upper face of the bed of the machine. Overlyin the saw and secured to the bed .is a cover-piate L, said plate being provided with a lateral arm or projection M, the upstanding wall of which is coincident with one side of the opening D. This m'ember M forms a stop or guide for the leg which is being cut ofi The table or chair to be leveled is placed upon the bed of the machine and the longest leg thereof is passed into the opening D and pushed along the guide or stop into contact with the saw, which .will cut off the inwardly-projecting portion of the leg so as to bring it to such length as will cause the table or chair to set level. In moving the table or chair over the bed the other three legs must, of course, be kept in contact therewith, in order that that portion of the lon est leg which is to be cut ofi may be just su cient to cause the table or chair to set evenly.

In Figs. 3 and 4 a modification of the apparatus is shown. Instead of employing a circular saw a band-saw is used, the latter being designated by N. The table under this construction will be provided with a slot of the same length as the upper stretch of the saw and with a transverse slot or opening 0, into which the leg of the table or chair may be projected. A cover-plate P extends over one portion of the saw, and a cover-plate Q provided with a guide or stop R against which one edge of the leg may bear, is placed over the other portion of the saw, said guide or stop extending out in line with one wall of the opening 0. The operation is the same as with the former construction.

It is conceivable that in addition to the modification just set forth, the apparatus maybe variedin other particulars, and so far as the generic invention'is concerned I do not desire to be limited to either construction herein set forth. I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. 'In a machine of the character specified,,

the combination of a bed having an opening therein; and a saw working in said opening, the cuttin edge'of the saw lying in a plane substantia 1y flush with the upper face of the bed, whereby a table or chair may be mounted upon and moved over said bed and the longest leg of said table or chair brought into working relation'with the saw, so as to cut off so much of said legas will cause the table to set evenly.

2. In a machine of the character specified, the combination of a .flat bed adapted to sustain a chair or table upon three legs, with the fourth or longer leg extending below the upper face of the bed; and a saw mounted with its cutting edge in substantial alinement with the upper face of the bed, whereby the longest leg of a table or chair may be cut off while the other legs are resting upon the bed, substantially as described.

3. In a machine of the character specified, the combination of a flat bed adapted and designed to support a chair or table upon three legs, with the fourth or longer leg extending below the upper face of the bed; a saw having itscutting edge working in a 7 plane coincident with the upper face of the bed; and means for securing proper adjustment of said saw.

4. In a machine of the character specified, the combination of a bed provided with an opening; a saw working in said opening, with its cutting edge lying in substantially the same planeas the upper face of the bed; and

a guide or stop arranged to one side of the opening and adapted to guide the leg of a chair or table, which is to be cut, to the saw.

5. In a machine of the character specified, the combination of a flat bed provided with an opening adapted to receive a saw so that the working edge of said saw may be brought into alinement with the upper face of the bed, said bed being likewise provided with a second opening or extension proceeding from said first o ening and into which a leg of a chair or table may be projected; and a guide arranged to one side of said lateral opening and adapted to guide the table-leg to the saw.
