Be it known that I, FELIX B. MoDJEsKr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stairways, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to stairways and relates particularly to stairways designed for use where the incline is steep.

WVith a stairway of ordinary construction, it is obivous that, where the inclination is steep, the front edges of the different stairs will extend over or beyond the rear edges of the stairs next below them and will cover the treads thereof to a greater or less extent, depending upon the angle of inclination, thus interfering with the placing of the feet thereon and also with stepping from one stair to another.

The object of my invention is to provide a stairway adapted for use where the angle of inclination is steep, in which this objectionable feature will be eliminated and which will present unobstructed treads or supporting surfaces for the feet.

To effect the desired objects, a stairway of my invention, broadly stated, comprises adjacent stairs having their front edges cut away at opposite sides to expose=the corresponding portions of the treads of the stairs next below them.

In the accompanying drawings, in which my invention is fully illustrated,Figure 1 is a partial top plan view of a stairway embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation thereof on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a single stair.

Particular applications in which the use of stairways of invention will be particularly advantageous, are in the holds of ships, engine and pump pits and the like, but their use is contemplated in all cases where the angle of inclination is steep.

Referring now to the drawings, A designates the stringers of my improved stairway, which, as shown in Fig. 2, are disposed at a steep angle, closely approximating the vertical. B, B designate the individual stairs, comprising two series consisting of alternate stairs.

In my improved stairway, adjacent stairs are cut away on opposite sides, preferably symmetrically on opposite sides of a central line extending the entire length of the stairway, as best seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Preferably, also, the stairs are cut away so that the front edges of the cut away portions thereof will be substantially in line with the rear edges of the stairs next below them, thus exposing the treads of adjacent stairs for their entire width at opposite sides of the center line of the stairway.

As shown, the stairs B are cut away on their left sides, as shown at 1, and the stairs B are cut away on their right sides, as shown at 2.

With a stairway constructed as described, it is obvious that each stair will present an unobstructed surface or tread adapted to receive the feet in ascending or descending the stairway and also that intermediate stairs, being cut away above said exposed treads, will not interfere with-stepping from one to the second stair above or below, thus effecting the objects of my invention.

I claim:*

1. A stairway comprising stairs the front edges of which extend beyond the rear edges of the stairs below them, respectively, the front edges of adjacent stairs being cut away at opposite sides to expose the corresponding portions of the treads of the stairs next below them.

2. A stairway comprising stairs the front edges of which extend beyond the rear edges of the stairs below them, respectively, the front edges of adjacent stairs being cut away at opposite sides of the center line of said stairway to expose the corresponding portions of the treads of the stairs next below them.

3. A stairway comprising stairs the front edges of which extend beyond the rear edges of the stairs below them, respectively, the front edges of adjacent stairs being cut away at opposite sides substantially to the line of the rear edges of the stairs next below them to expose the corresponding portions of the treads of said next lower stairs.
