PROPELLING AND STEERING MECHANISM FOR AlR-SHlPS- Specification of Letters Patent.

- its object to provide improved apparatus of this class; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more speclfically pointed out, described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specifications, of which the accompanying drawingsform a part, and. in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in 'which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an air-ship with my propeller attachment. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the rudder attached. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the propeller turned at an angle with the body of the air-ship. Fig. -l is a plan view of the invention showing the propeller elevated at an angle with the body of the air-ship.

The numeral 2 indicates an air-ship frame of ordinary construction to which the propelling mechanism is attached.
Referring now to the propelling mechanism, the numeral 3 indicates a motor carried by the cross rods 4 which connect the lower horizontal rods of the frame.
5 indicates a sprocket-wheel carried by the motor and connected by a chain with sprocket-wheel 6, said sprocket-wheel being arranged on the connecting shaft 7 which is journaled in the end 8 of the air-shi framework. The end of the connecting s aft carrying the sprocket-wheel is journaled in the supporting-frame 9 which frame comprises a cross piece extending from side to side of the 1 lower framework of the air-ship and a vcrti- 5 I cal portion perpendicular to the cross piece and extending from the same to the'upper horizontal portion of the air-ship frame.
The end of the connecting shaft journaled in the air-ship frame is bifurcated as at 10 truding from said hub.
and a pivot connects the two branches of the same. A block 12 is arranged to turn upon said pivot. Another pivot extends through block 12 at right angles to the first pivot and connects the prongs of the bifurcated auxiliary shaft 13. Block 12 with the two pivots forms a con ling for the connecting shaft 7 and the auxiliary shaft 13. The end of the air-ship carrying the propeller blades is prov vided with a supplementary framework 14 welded thereto for the purpose of supporting part of the propelling mechanism. Said supplementary framework is of suitable shape and pro'vided at its free. extremities with eyes 15, for holding in' position the hub 16, upon which part of tlie propelling mechanism swings. The eyes 15 engage pins 17 pro- The hub 16 is further provided with pins 18 which engage the eyes 19 of the swinging frame 26, in the hearing of which is journaled the auxiliary shaft- 13 carrying on its free extremity the pro,-

- Referring now to supporting frame 9. the same is provided with an upright 23 to which is pivoted a lover Z-I, the said lever 24 having an arm 25 pivoted thereto, the other extremity of said arm being pivoted to an upright 26 welded to the hub 16 thus forming a means for swinging said hub on its pins resting in the supplenientaryframework 14. It is readily seen that since the swinging frame is attached to hub 16 and the auxiliary shaft 13 carrying the propeller blades is journaled in said frame, the inclination of-thc hub 16 will raise or lower the propeller blades with ref erence to the body of the air-ship. Another upright 27'is arranged on the supporting frame 9 and pivoted to its upper extremity is another lever 28 having an arm '29 pivoted thereto, the opposite ektremity of said arm being pivoted to an auxiliary/ arm 30 having its opposite extremity welded to the rudder 31 which is arranged on the rear end of the ai1,'shi which is understood to be the end most istant from the propeller blades. A lever-rack 32 extends fromfthe upper horizontal rod of the air-ship frame and is provided with notches 33 for the retention of the lovers when placed in the same. In this manner the propeller blades or the rudder may be elevated or depressed with relation to the air-ship and held at any desired angle 'motor and the rudder I provide a steering frame.

The periphery of said wheel is grooved to carry a guide rope 36 which rope extends from said wheel toward the front of the air-ship, through the eyes 37 of the'crossrod 38, (which rod is for thepurpose of keeping the guide rope out of the way of the body of the air-ship) and is connected with hooks 39 which engage the ears 40 of the swinging By means of the steering wheel it will be seen that the propeller blades and support therefor can be turned from left to right or vice versa and so guide the ship in its course.
Qperation: When the motor is turned'on the sprocket-wheel carried thereby revolves ion to the sprocket-wheel lone connecting shaft which turns tween the connecting shaft and the auxiliary shaftthe latter is also caused to revolve in its bearings and as the propeller hub' is fixed to the free end. of the auxiliary shaft it revolves together h the'propeller blades and in this manner 1211.9 air-ship is propelled. The motion of the air-ship can be reversed by reversing the motor. The rudder is intended to facilitate the upward or downward flight of the ship by inclining it in the direction in which travel is desired. It is understood the air-ship is to be provided with a balloon of suitable dimensions for the purpose of floating the ship.
I Having thus described my invention, what I desireto claim as new and secure by Letters Patent is.
1. In a ropelling mechanism, a motor, a s rockets iaft suitably supported and carrying a sprocket wheel engaging the aforesaid sprocket-wheel, an auxiliary shaft coupled to said connecting shaft, propeller blades arranged on said auxiliary shaft, a hub 16 carried by supplementary framework of the airship, a swinging frame pinion'ed to said. hub and carrying said auxiliary shaft in its bearings. y
2. In anai'r-shipfa propeller comprising a motor, a sprocket-wheel carried thereby, a
connecting shaft arranged directly above said motor and carrying a sprocket-wheel to engage the aforesaid sprocket-wheel, an auxiliary shaft coupled to said connectingshaft, propeller blades carried by said auxiliary shaft, a swinging hub carriedfby supplementary framework of the air-ship, a swingin frame pinioned to said hub and having'sai eel carried thereby, a connecting.

5. In an air-ship, a steering apparatus comprisin a steering wheel, a laterally swinging frame pivoted on-the front of the air-ship, a guide rope connecting said steering wheel and swing'in frame, a rudder arranged on the rear of t e ship and means for raising or lowering the same to facilitate .the upward ordownward motion of the air-ship.
6. In an air-ship, a steering apparatus comprising a steering wheel and lever therefor, a laterally swinging frame pivotedto the front framework of the. air-ship, means conterminecting said frame and steering wheel, .a rudder arranged on the reanof the air-ship, an auxiliary arm welded thereto for raising or lowering saidrudder, a connecting arm iv.- oted tosaid auxiliary arm',a; lever carrie by the framework ofthe air ship and pivoted to said connecting arm and a lever-rack extending from the upper framework ofthe air-ship and designed to engage the said lever when the same is at rest.
