Description

No. 857,818f PATENTED JUNE 25, 1907.
, G. F. MILLER. l SHEETMETAL TYPE RIBBON SPOOL 0R HLDBR.
APPLICATION FILD MAL. 18, 1907.
UNITED STATESAENT OFFICE.
GEORGE F. MILLER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
y No. 857,818.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed March 18,1907. Serial No. 362,849.
l'o bi/ wlmm, it Duty cm1/cern: v.Be it known that I, GEORGE F. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in `Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and btate y of N ew York, have invented a new and use- 1.
ful Improvement in Sheet -Metal rlype- Ribbon Spools or Holders, o1" which the tollowing is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal spools or holders for 'type ribbons of type writers or other machines.
'lhe object oi' my invention is to provide a sheet metal type ribbon spool or holder of a strong, simple, eiiicient and durable construction, composed of i'ew parts and capable-.of being rapidly and cheaply manufactured.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described and more particularly speciiied in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication, Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet metal type ribbon spool or holder embodying my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. I1`ig.3 is a section on line 3-3 of F ig". 1 and Fig. 4 is a cross section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.. I
In the drawing, A A represent the sheet metal side'plates or disks of the spook/B the core around which the type ribbon C is wound and D the connecting eyelet or thimble. Y
The side disks or plates A A oi' the spools are furnished on their inner faces with annular grooves or channels ato receive the circular ends b of the cylindric core B. The
side disks A A are provided with central holes 0,1 to receive the connecting eyelet or thnnble D and with holes ct2 to receive a stud or pin to cause the spool to turn with the winding shaft in winding the ribbon upon the spool. The disks A are also furnished at their periphery with outwardly turned curls or curved edges a3 to strengthen and stifen the same and give a smooth finish.
The core B is of cylindrical or tubular lshape and has a butt joint b3 uniting its l meeting edges, and is provided with an integral loop bl through which the end of the type ribbon (j is inserted and an integral l tooth adapted to be inserted through the end of the ribbon C to hold the same. The connecting eyelet Dis a cylindrical or tubular thimble inserted through the holes al in the side disks A of the spool and upset or clenched down to securely clamp the cylindric sheet nieta-l core B between the side disks A A and firmly and rigidly unite all the parts together, while at the Sametime atl'ording a smooth bearing for the shaft F ofthe typewriter or other machine upon which the spool turns.
By my improved construction of sheet metal spool, the hollow cylindric core iitting between the disks serves as a brace or strut member, while the hollow' or cylindric connecting thirnble or eyelet serves as the tension member to clamp and tie all the parts together. f
I claim 1. In a sheet metal spool, the combination with the side disks having circular grooves to receive the ends of a hollow core, 'a hollow sheet metal core fitting between the side disks and provided with a ribbon retaining loop and tooth, and a central connecting thimble extending through and between the disks and rigidly connecting the disks and core, substantially as specified.
2. The sheet metal type ribbon spool consisting in the side disks having integral channels or grooves to receive the ends of the core, a hollow core iitting between the side disks and a connecting eyelet or thimble extending through and between the disks and clamping the core between them, said connecting eyelet being of less diameter than and separated from the 'hollow core substantially as specified. f
GEORGE F. MILLER.
