Be it 1Known that l, EMIL FRANKE, a citizenof the'UnitedStates, residing at Astoria, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improve- Bralres, of which the following is a specification.

This device isadapted to operate any forni of brake but in order to show its application, a brake bar 5. of simple construction and having shoes on their outer ends and operating in the slide 7, are connected by means of the links 8 with the levers 9 pivoted at 10 to the The free ends of these levers 9 have secured to them rods 1] which are connected to'cross-heads 12 and. 12 the latter having at its outer ends horizontal rods 13 carrying tubes 14 in which play the rods 15 that are carried by the outer ends of the head 12, these rods`thus telescoping so that the heads can approach each other so as to operate the brake beams 5 so that the shoes may work upon the wheels' of the car. v The rods 13 and 15 are adjustable on their respective heads and may be lengthened or s ortened by means of the nuts 16 and 17. The tube 14 is slotted as at 18 so that the rods 15 may have secured to them by means of bolts 19, the cross-heads 20 which carry-an armature 21. The tube 14 itself has secured to it a cross-head 22 with an armature 23. The cross-heads 12 and 12 carrying armatures 24 and 25 and these various armatures are influenced by the two separate and distinct cores 26 and 26 of the electro-magnets 27 and 28. Y
The electro-magnets'are energized simultaneously by the circuit which will be hereinafter described, and when energized the niagnet 27 attracts the armature 21 connectedwith the cross-head 12 and the armature 24 on said cross-head is attractedA by theimagnet 28. Likewise the armature 21 on the crosshead 2O is attracted toward the magnet 27 while the same magnet attracts thearmature on the cross-head 12 consequently drawing the rods 11' toward .each other and operating the brake beams 5 so as to apply the brake.
The brake is'operated-by means of a magnet-ic circuit which may be a loop from -the regular operating circuit and is controlled by means of the switch arm 30 which is adapted to make contact with the various resistance coils 31 so as to apply more or less current to operate the brake, The two lines 33 and 34 are not only adapted to supply the current to the electro-magnets but are also connected with a controllingswitch at the other end ofthe car and which is a duplication of the switch 30. The current .to the Abrake being Supplied by thecircuit 32 shown diagrampower 35 may be a battery or dynamo. Blowout lfuses 36 may be used at various lpoints in the circuit and various expedient-s resorted to to apply the current in a practical manner.
The operation of the brain` is as vfollows: When the current is supplied by means of the arm 30 by the closing of the contact points Of the resistance coils 31, theelectro-magnets the cores, the armatures 21 and 25- although connected with different crossheads are attracted by the core 26 while the , armatures 23 and 24 are attracted by the lcore 26. The rods 13 and 15 are adapted to slide one within the other so vthat they may lind a bearing upon each other and tures working on the adjacent ends ofthe cores may work uniformly and in unison. The magnets are inclosed within a barrel or cylinder 37 in which are. slots 38 and in each play the cross-heads 20 and 22. This cylinder is provided with ears 39 which guide 'the rods 13 and 15.` i

The upper end of the shaft is provided with a handle and arm 44, the latter having aV depending pin 45 which enters one of the holes 42 and determines which one of the oints 43 the arm 30 is in contact with and olds the arm thereon.
4 What Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an electric brake for 'cars and vehiclesthe combination with a cylinder carrying electro-magnets, of. a circuit including the electroemagnets, one or more controllers in the circuit, lcross-heads carrying armatures and telescoping within each other,l brake beamsr and shoes and means connecting the cross-heads with the brake beams.
2. In an electric brake for cars and vehiwithout the cylinder and carrying armatures, cross-heads within the cylinder and also carryingarmatures, coupling means for the inte- 1 rior and exterior cross-heads, brake beams and shoes and means connecting the crosslieads with the brake beams.
3J In. an electric brake for cars andvehicles the combination with a casing inclosing two `or more electro-magnets,` cross-heads within and without the casing carrying armatures, telescoping connections for the cross-heads and adapted to allow the movement of two or more sets of cross-,heads and move inthe proper direction when the electro-magnets are energized, brake beams and shoesand means connecting the cross-heads with the brake beams so that the brakes may be applied.
4. In an electric brake jfor cars and vehicles the combination with two or more electro-magnets, of an electric circuit and conto be attracted by each endlof the magnetic core, coupling rods adapted to connect those cross-heads which move in corresponding directions when the magnets are energized, brake beams and shoes and connections be-Vv tween the brake beams andthe cooperating shoes and levers androds connecting eachair of correspondingly moving armatures with the brake beams.
