ROPE-THINIBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed March 16,1906. Serial Nat-106,468.
To (MZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GLENN CHARLES BROWN, a citizen of' the United States, residing at Bessemer, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope-Thimbles and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyy ing drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to thimbles de# signed to be used particularly for wire rope, and my invention has for its object to provide a thimble which can be easily applied to the rope and wherein the rope can be instantly inspected in order to detect any probable weakness.
A further object of my invention is to provide a thimble which is practically non-` breakable, but is strong, durable and e'liicient.
A further object of my invention is to provide a thimble with which either an old or new rope may be employed without affecting the strength of either.
lVith these objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction of the thimble and in certain combinations of parts which willl be rst fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing. Figure 1 is an elevation of thimble showing rope in position and rope-clamp. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the wedge member and clamps, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 4-4 oi Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which:
1 indicates the device which comprises the thimble 2, transversely adjustable clamps 5.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it will be seen .that each of the inner edges 6 of the thimble 2 is provided with a sharp longitudinal groove 7, and that the upper and lower edges 8 of the wedge member 3 are provided with a double bevel to conform to said grooves 7.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 4 it will be seen wedge member 3, keys 4 andthat two keys 4 are passed through openings made transversely@ through the thimble 2 and wedge memberl, said keys 4 engaging the inner edges of the thimble and the outer edges of the wedge member 3 in the manner as shown in Fig. 1 in order to effectually key or lock the two parts together.
The Wedge member 3 is provided with a series of bolt holes 10 through which the bolts 11 pass to secure the clamps 5 in position; said bolts passing through said clamps and being provided with suitable nuts and jam nuts 12 and 13 or any other convenient means for securing the clamps.
As shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the thimble 2 and Wedge member 3 are provided on their outer edges with a concaved groove in order to accommodate the rope 14, the wedge member 3 tapering until the grooves on each side thereof meet at the end 15 as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully described the several arts of my invention, its operation is as iolows: In order to assemble the parts for operation, the thimble 2 is placed over a clevis or other element to which the thimble isto be connected, and the wedge member 3 is inserted in the thimble, and the keys 4 are driven in position. The rope is then drawn around the thimble and wedge member plenty of end length being given so that a substantial end is left at the end of the wedge member, and one or more suitable rope clips 16 appliedabout the rope: any approved type of rope clip being employed. The clamps 5 are then placed in position and the nuts carried down hard to draw the two sides of the clamps together; the ends 17 of the clamps being curved or bent inwardly in such manner that the rope is almost entirely surrounded thereby. rFhe clamps being thus in position the thimble and rope is ready for operation.
Having thus fully described my invention I do not wish to be understood as limiting mysehc to the exact construction herein set forth as various slight changes may be made therein which would fall within the limit and scope of the Jfollowing claims.
What I claim as my invention and desire vto secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a thimble, a wedge mem ber constructed to be inserted in said thimble, a suitable key Jfor locking said thimble IOO and Wedge member together and a clamp thimble and member for engaging the rope, ro constructed to engage the rope, said clamp substantially as described.
being carried by said Wedge member, Sub- Initestimony whereof, I afHX mysignature, stantially as described. in presence of tWO Witnesses.
2. In a device of the character described, GLENN CHARLES BROWN.
the combination of a thimble, a member constructed to be inserted in said thimble, means Witnesses:
for locking said thimble and member to- CHAS. ROUND BEATTIE, gether, and a clamp associated with said J. ESTAS JONES.
