Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1907.
Application filed February 9,1907. Serial No. 356,532
To (t/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J UDsoN M. GRIFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Check-Protectors and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- aot description of the same, such as will onable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This inventlon relates to check protectors, and has for its object an improved device of simple construction and easy of manipulation, whereby any part of an ordinary check in which writing occurs, either in figures or in full words, may, after the writing has been finished, have its paper mutilated or partially perforated, without impairing the legibility of the writing, so that erasure or altera ion of the amount is rendered difficult, if not impossible.
In the drawings :Figure 1, is a perspective of one form of the device. Fig. 2, is an end elevation, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3, is a plan of a modified form. Fig. 4, is an end elevation of this form.
. ,ifA part of the upper surface of the base 1 has preferably a special corrugated surface 2, and at one end of the base, shown in Fig. 1, is hinged a cover plate 3, which extends over its entire length, and whose center, which is de signed to he immediately over the corrugated part 2, is cut away to afl'ord access thereto fromabove. At each side of the cover are uides or tracks 4 and 5, under whose over ranging inner edges 4 and 5 engage the ends of the journal pin or axle 6 on which is journaled a mutilating roller 9, which, when the cover is brought down against the base piece, engages closely with its corrugations against those of the piece 2. Any paper inserted therebetween is roughsued in such a way that its fiber is grilled or embossed, and any attempt to alter the writing by further penstrokes results in a running of the ink through the broken fibers of the paper in a way thatdnstantly destroys all negotiability of the check in the eyes of an experienced person.
If merely that portion of one line on which the amount of the check is written in figuresis to be grilled, a short stroke of the handle 19 and the roller 9 is sufficient, but if, in addition, the entire line in which the amount is written out at full length, or the line contain- In Figs. 3 and 4, is illustrated a type of this device in which the hinging of the rollersupporting portion to the base portion is along a side, instead of one end.
The slide rod 1 1 is supported between the inclined supports 12 and the bracket 13 is slidably ournaled thereon, and its possible range of movement limited accordingly. The modification in the form of the casing 14 here used from the type shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is seen to be comparatively slight. In this type the holding effect on the check of the cover plate 2, (which as such is omitted), is taken by leaf springs 15 at each end of the base, under which the check is slipped to the position desired before the roller is applied.
What I claim is: 1. In,oombination with a base having a 1grilled upper surface, means hinged thereto or holding a paper in place thereupon, said means being wholly free from interfering enga ement over the grilled portion, and a gri led roller adapted to be moved lengthwise of the grilled surface, bein guided within and confined to a path comp ementary in extent therewith, substantially as described.
2. In a check protector, in combination with a grilled base, a mutilating' roller adapted to coact therewith in mutilating a sheet of paper inserted therebetween, means hinged to the base for holding the paper in place, and a guide member whereby the possible range of movement of the roller is limited, substantially as described.
Y 3.. A check protector, having in combination with a mutilating roller, 9. base portion adapted to support the check and to co-o'perate with the roller in the mutilation of selected portions of its surface, means hin edto that part of the base portion whose sur ace is not pressed upon by said roller for holding the check in place during the movement of.
