I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BOBBIN-CLUTCHING DEVICE FOR SPINDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 18, 1907.
Application filed March 13,1906. Serial No. 305.895.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central Falls, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bobbin-Clutching Devices for Spindles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of novel and eflieient means for holding the bobbin in position upon the spindle during its revolution, and it relates to that class of bobbin clutohing devices which are adapted to engage with the bobbin internally through the medium of centriugal force. And my invention consists in the employment of a ring of chain links held to rotate with the spindle, the expansion of the said ring, caused by centrifugal force, serving to insure the rotation of the bobbin With the spindle without slipping thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of the spindle and a longitudinal section of the bobbin, the links of the chain being thrown outward to engage ment with the bore of the bobbin. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of the spindle without the bobbin. Fig. 3 represents a detai-l view of a portion of the spindle with the ring of chain links removed. Fig. 4 represents a view of the same taken at right angles to that of'Fig. 3. Fig. 5 re resents an edge view of the ring of chain lin (s. Fig. 6 represents a plan view of the same. Fig. 7 represents an edge View showing a modification.
In the drawing, A represents the spindle, B the bobbin, and C the whirl ol' the spindle. The upper end of the hub D of the whirl is provided With the annular oollar E, which is adapted to protect the surrounding ring F of chain links and with the annular groove G, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and above the groove G is Secured the downwardly eXtending hook H, which by entering one of the links I of the ring F of chain links, serves to retain the said I ring in a fixed position during the revolution i of the spindle. The ring F is provided with an even number of links of which the links a a,
, will lie below the collar E in a plane parallel l to the aXis of the spindle, While the links b b I will lie with their inner edges in the groove G, and eXtend outward from the aXis of the i said spindle, and through the action of cenl trifugal force be caused to engage with the i wall of the bore of the bobbin, as shown .in f Fig. 1, the centrifugal force developed in the rotation of the spindle serving to hold the bobbin B firmly in connection with the rotating spindle.
A modification is shown in Fig. 7, in which the chain links b b are in duplicate, thus adding to the centrifugal force exerted upon the wall of the bobbin.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a spindle, With a ring of chain links held to revolve with the spindle, and adapted to engagement with the wall of the bore of the bobbin upon the rotation of the spindle. 2. The eombination of a ring of chain links, and a spindle provided with a groove adapted to hold the inner edge of the outwardly extending links of the chain, With means for preventing the rotation of the said chain upon the spindle.
3. The combination of a ring of chain links, with a spindle provided with a groove 'adapted to hold the inner edge of the outwardly eXtending links of the chain, the proteoting collar above the said groove, and means for holding the chain against rotation upon the spindle.
HENRY E. HUGHES.
