COLLAPSIBLE HAT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed February 26, 1907. Serial N0. 359,354.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL BEHRINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Hats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to collapsible hats and has for its object the simple and economical construction of a hat which is adapted to be compressed into a small size yet capable of being expanded into a high hat at the will of the wearer, as will be more fully explained in the following speciiication, set forth in the claims and shown in the drawings.
Figure 1 is a sectional view of the hat in its Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the hat as compressed or collapsed. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the means for expanding the hat.
The hat proper 5 is formed with a rim 6 and a crown 7 the height of same being of moderate dimension and secured to the hat above the rim is the extension 8 having at its ucpper end an auxiliary crown or top piece 9 i entica'l in shape with the crown 7.
When the hat is expanded it has the sha e of the ordinary high hat and the means fldr expanding same consists of a toggle joint composed of the two members 10 and 11 each pivoted to a plate l2 and 13 respectively and the two sections are secured together by means of a pin 14. The plates 12 and 13 are provided with teeth or spurs 15 by which they are secured to their respective crown pieces and when the spurs are clenched the plates are rigidly held in place. The toggle sections 10 and 11 are forced apart by means of a springl which surrounds the pin 14 and each of its ends bearing against one of the toggle sections.
When the hat is in its collapsed condition as shown in Fig. 2 the toggle section z10 folds down within the .section 11 and aspring latch 17 catches in the notch 18 at the lower end of the section 11 and securely locks the toggle in its folded position. Attached to the latch 17 is a string 19 which may pass to the side or the front of the hat where it is Within reach of the wearer and by releasing the latch from the notch 18 the hat springs into its expanded position as shown in Fig. 1.
It is obvious that various modifications may be resorted tovin the construction of the hat without departing from the essential features above described. The extension 8 may be of cloth silk or any desired fabric and v aricpus other shapes may be employed if des1re What I claim as new and desire to secure v by Letters Patent is:
cured thereto, an auxiliary crown in the top of the extension, a toggle joint having one of its members secured to each of the crowns, a spring adapted to open the toggle joint and means for locking the toggle joint in its closed position. f
4. In a colla sible hat, the combination with a crown, o an auxiliary crown, a flexible extension connecting the crowns, a toggle joint also connecting the crowns, a spring acting on the toggle joint to normally extend the extension, and means for locking the toggle joint in closed position.
5. In a collapsible hat the combination with a crown, of an auxiliary crown, a flexible extension enveloping the crowns, a toggle joint connecting the crowns and secured thereto, a sprin encircling the pivot of the toggle joint, an a latch controlled from the outside of the hat and adapted to lock and hold the toggle joint in its closed position.
l In testimony whereof I ailix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
EMIL BEHRINGER.
