Description

- benzin,
UNITED sr irns rerun-r carton.
WILLEM VAN DER hart-inn, on Newman; amusement 'soLi'msioArioii OF nvoaoomqsoms,
amen-e, Seine, near Paris, in the Repu'blit df, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement inthe Emulsioning and Solidification of Hydrocarbons, such as Petroleum, Benzin, Mineral-Oils, &c., of which 1-8 the fol lowing is a specification It is known by the applicants German patent No, 176,366 that, fluid hydrocarbons such as kerosene, .crude oil,.- residual oil or can be emulsionized by means of a solution of glue (colla, glutin, gelatin), and this emulsion can then besol'idifiedjby completely drying or hardening the solid blocks with formaldehyde, tannic or chromic acid and such like. I. have now found that into this emulsion dustlike fuels can be included,
provided, that the quantity of same does not exceed the limits beyond which it is possible .of glue only,
toobtain a true emulsion 30 40% of coal duster plowder can always be bound. The blocks, t us obtained by means of.-a solutioz'ii show the deficiency that. especiallythe lighter hydrocarbons are not seg. of dustlikefuels such cured: from gradually volatilizing when the blocks are stored for some. time, a fact, which is, of course detrimental. On the other hand the solidified Heavier-products of the distillation from the crude oil, such as n1ineral oil, residual oil and also the crude oil itself, show the disadvantageous property, that for a long time the solid' blocks exude resin-like substances. Moreover the blocks manufactured only with glue burn with considerable of smoke it the access of air is not sufficient. These deficiencies can be removed by the addition of further diiferent substances to, the emulsion, that is the addi' tion of glycerin in order to prevent the loss of Weight of which product 34% are sufficient. An addition of salts'of organic acids, 6. g. of tartaric, oxalic and citric acid effects a smokeless burning of the solidified blocks. The whole process is performed as follows: About 1000 g. of benzin or kerosene or crude oil are eniulsioned with 50 60 g. of glue soaked in water and then dissolved by heat-- ing on a warin'waterbath and with 300400 der, the hydrocarbon being added to it in Specification of LettersfPatent.

small portions and shaken or querled, until all has become a perfect emulsion and no con-. 'stituent separates from it after the shaking I ceases;
If it is desired .to prevent a volatilization the hydrocarbon 30*40 g. of glycerin are added before emulsioning the mixture. Also 40-50 'g. of tartrate or oxalate of potassiumare equally added if it is desired to make products burning Without smoke. During the emulsioningit is advisable to keep the fluid Warm, so that the mixture remains liquid. After'all hydrocarbons are well emulsioned the emulsion is poured out into molds.
of'any description and allowed to cool down,
sion then very easily becomes hard and can be taken out of the molds. The further hardening process can be effected by drying at the open air,'it is, however, more advantageous to harden-the glue by means of formaldehyde or tannic' or chromic acid, or by alcohol or suchlik'e means. with formaldehyde is performed either by putting the blocks into a watery solution of formaldehyde or-by the action of gaseous formaldehyde in an; air-tight box. Thus hydrocarbons with the addition of dustlike fuels represent solid blocks. If they are manufactured with glycerin also, they are considerably elastic and remain absolutely unvariable; even,
when stored for many months no loss of Weight can be found. Heavy oils such as crude oil,
artificial cooling. The emul- The hardening residual oil this solidified are obtained so fas t,
that. the blocks can be stored about 5 meter high Without a changing of form or loss of oil. The blocks thus obtained can be lighted only, by a flame, not by heat or glowing materials and the flamecan easily be extinguished by application of Water 6. g. by a vaporizer. .95
They can also be kindled againim nediately after extinguishing, "the water not-wetting them. Likewise they are. neither affectedby moisture nor by heat or cold, even boiling water has no influence at all upon this prod uct. It is veryeasilyhandled, does not break or crumble and will burn away almost Without any ash.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 4 3 1. Improvement in the solidification of hydrocarbons such as naphtha,-petroleurn,
hydrocarbons such as naphtha,
benzin, benzol and such like, which consistshenzin, benzol and such like, which consists in adding dust-like fuels, such as coal dust and such like, to an emulsion of hydrocarb0ns and a solution of glue and then submitting the mass to a hardenin process.
2. Improvement in the so idification of hydrocarbons such as naphtha, petroleum, benzin, benzol and such like, which consists in adding glycerin and dust-like fuels to an emulsion of hydrocarbons and a solutionof glue and then submitting the mass to a har emng process.
3. Improvement in the solidification of petroleum,
in adding salts of organic acids, such as tartrate, oxalate, citrate and dust-like fuels to an emulsion of hydrocarbons and as'olution of glue and ,then submitting the mass to a hardening process.
4. Improvement in the solidification of hydrocarbons such as na htha, petroleum, benzin, benzol and such lilie, which consists in adding glycerin, salts of organic acids, such as tartrate, oxalate, citrate and dust-like fuels to an emulsion of hydrocarbons and a solution of glue and then submitting the mass to a hardening rocess.
In Witness whereo my name in the Witnesses.
