Description

tacita sa OLIVER- HORN AND WILLIAM P. HORN, OF DDISN, NEW YRK.
Letters Patent No. 85,740, dated J'anua/Ip; 12, 1869i, antedated Jamba/ry 2, 1869.
izurrnovr.:Meirinr @Ariens ron CIRCULAR sAws.
To all whom 'i't may concern: r
' beinghad to the `zuz-companymg drawing, which is made a part of this specification.
The subject of` our invention is a device for regulating the thickness of lumber, sawn by a circular saw, in
a more positive andeiiioent manner than has heretofore been accomplished..
It consists of one ormore knees or gauges, located en the bed-frame of the saw, ndapted to be adjusted relatively to the saw, to vary the thickness of boardv produced, and to be folded to admit of the logs being rolled over them, in placing them on the frame. The logis set up to these v bythe ordinary head-blocks, or analogous arrangements, and the boards sawn thereg vfrom at a uniform thickness, determined by the distance of the face of said knees from the saw, whichdistance, and the consequent thickness of board or other lumber produced, are indicated ona suitably-graduated scale on the guide-ways of said knees.
In the drawingv Figure 1 represents a plan view of our improved log- 'setting device in position on the saw-frame, a portion only of which is shown.
'Figure 2- is a front elevation, and Figure 3, a side or end elevation thereof. A may represent the bed-frame of the saw.
B,.the circular saw, mounted on its arbor, B', in
said frame.-
G, the log-carriage way, and' D, the log-carriage of a circular-saw mill.
All of these parts may be of any approved construction and arrangement.
sliding block F.
nut g.
vSaw Mills, and we do h'reby declare the following to -bea fue, clear, and exact description thereof', reference E represents a suitable bracket, attached to the side of said frame, by bolts e e, and forming, at E', a suitable dovetailediorother way for the reception of the lThe block F is provided, on itsunder side, with a nut,f, for the reception of the screw G, and on its upper side with perforated lugs, f f', to which is hinged, by the rod vH, the knee I, which is. provided with` matching perforated lugs, fi, for its attachment.
The knee I is further provided with a stop or prop, 'i to sustain it in its vertical position, and at its front edge with perforated lugs, 'i2 fi?, for the reception of the attaching-pintle or shaft J of the vfriction-roller K, which composes its face.
A graduated scale, L, is provided on the upper .surface of the guide-way E', to indicate the distance of the face of the knee from -the saw, and the consequent thickness of lumber, tlie rear edgebf the block F serving as the pointer,
,Our improved knee or gauge, in connection with the ordinary grooved wheels or ltrack of the log-carriage, serves to eiectually prevent the saw running deeper into the log, in case the brackets or knees of the head-- blocks should, by reason of wear or other imperfection, 'be capable of movement toward the side of the saw, which would cut a belly'on the plank, as, with my provision, all movement of the log in that direction' is prevented, and the head-blocks, or other similar arf rangement, only employed to hold the log against'it.'
Having obtained the desired thickness of lumber, the -gangesf preserve it until changed, it being only necessary to move the lo'g up against them, at each out, which operation may readily be performed by one comparatively a novice, as no nicety of adjustment is required.` t. l Having thus-described our invention,
What We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a saw-mill, one or more adjustable hingedknees on gauges, arranged o the side of the sav:r opposite to the ordinary head-blocks, for the purpose of regulating the thickness of the material sawed, substantially as' described.
To the above specification of our new and useful improvement .infolding knees orgauges for settingv logs, we have signed our hands, this 22dday of April,
Witnesses; Gno. S. SHnrAnn,
DANAA Rosn.
