W. MAYER. AMMUNITION VEHICLE.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 18, 1906.
PATENTED JUNE 18, 1907.
. T aZZ whmn it may concern.-
TINTTF STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WIIJIIELM MAYER, OF ESSEI ONTHE-RUHR, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO FRIED. KR-UPP AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, OF ESSEN-ON-THE-RUHR, GER- MANY.
AMMUNITION-VEHICLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed June l8 1906. Serial No. 322,320.
Be it known that I, WILHELM MAYER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Essen-on-theRuhr, Ri'ittenscheid, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ammunition- Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to ammunition vehicles and in particular, limbers and rear ammunition wagons in which the ammunition is arranged vertically and one piece separated from the other, the object of the invention being to construct the box of such vehicles in such a manner that the ve hicle becomes very strong and at the same time light and compact.
In the accompanying drawing, the invention is by the way of example shown applied to a limber.
Figure 1 is a rear view of the limber, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1, looking from above; Fig. 3 is a side view of the limber, partly in section on line 3 3, Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 shows a perspective of the bottom of the limber box.
The limber box is provided with a lid B and is divided into three compartments by means of two vertical partitions C into which are stamped bearings 0 (Figs. 1 and 2) for the wheel-axle H, the two outer compartments being adapted to contain cartridges.
In the upper part of the two outer compartments are disposed horizontal partitions E (Figs. 1 and 3), in which are stamped seats e, one for each cartridge. In the sheet-metal bottom D of the wagon box are stamped a corresponding number of seats d (see also Fig. 1) which taper downwardly to fit the point of the projectiles, two caps F being secured to the bottom serve as protection for the projectile points which project downwardly from the seats (1 The sheet-metal bottom D (Fig. 4) is provided with vertical flanges d and d which are formed by bending upwardly the edges of the bottom. The flanges d and (2 lie against the outer faces of the vertical walls A A, A, A and A of the limber box and are riveted to said walls. In the flanges d of the bottom sheet are stamped rectangular bearings d which project through corresponding perforations in the walls A A of the limber box (see in particular Fig. 2). The pole G which is provided with the limber hook g rests in the bearings (1 and is secured in position by means of rectangular frames J which are secured to the flanges d and to the pole G.
In the flanges d of the sheet metal bottom D are stamped cylindrical bearings d which project through perforations in the side walls A and A (see in particular Fig. 1, left portion). The bearing faces of each of the bearings 61 are increased by means of a ring K secured to the flange (1 The bearings (1* and the rings, K together with the abovementioned bearings c of the partitions C receive the wheel axle H, which is held from rotation and axial displacement by means of bolts L which pass through the axle and the bearings c.
The invention is equally useful for rear ammunition wagons, in which case the bottom of the wagon box must be provided with flanges which correspond to the flanges d and which receive the draw-beam.
Having described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. An ammunition vehicle having a box provided with a bottom having side members with bearings for the wheel-axle.
2. An ammunition vehicle having a box provided with a bottom having side members with bearings for the pole.
3. In a device of the character described, a box bottom made from a single piece of metal and having upwardly bent flanges provided with bearings for the purpose set forth.
4. In a device of the character described, a box bottom made from a single piece of metal having upwardly bent flanges throughout its circumference; each of said flanges being provided with a bearing stamped therein.
5. In a device of the character described, a
boX bottom made from a single piece of axle and a second pair of side members porsheet metal; the bottom having its four vided With bearings for the pole. I edges bent to provide vertical flanges, and The foregoing specification signed at each flange being provided with a bearing. Dilsseldorf, this third day of May, 1906.
6. An ammunition vehicle having a boX WILHELM MAYER. provided With a bottom with seats for the In presence of projectiles and having a pair of side mem- WILLIAM EssENWEIN,
