STEAM-BOILER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed March 26,1906. Serial N0.'308,166.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ItoBERTsoN,
is a combined tubular and sectional boiler and the objects of my'invention are, first, to provide by improved construction a steam-boiler to carry steam at high pressure with safety; second, to provide a steamboiler of maximum capacity for space occupied; a further object being to secure increased circulation in said steam-boiler.
My invention consists in providing certain novel constructions and combinations, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a vertical cross section of my improved steam-boiler and furnace, the front having been entirely removed, and is represented as passing substantially through the line 12 on the longitudinal drawing of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal elevation of the steamboiler and furnace, side wall of the setting removed, and is represented as passing substantially through the line 67 of Fig. 1.
' In carrying out my invention, I employ shells of small diameter, each containing an equal number of fire tubes, suspended from steel beams overhead, in combination with the system of horizontal water tubes 12 at 3 each side of said shells, and other connections that will be hereinafter described. Also in connection with'the aforesaid shells and Water tubes, is the furnace with bridge wall I 3, 4, built to the level of the bottom of shells and forming the flues 5, 5, 5, all substantially as shown on drawing in Fig. 1.
All the horizontal water tubes are expanded into headers 8 at front and rear ends of the steam-boiler, and the headers at rear end of the steam-boiler are expanded into the mud-drum 11, the mud-drum being connected by large pipes 10 riveted to the bottom rear end of the shells.
The headers at the front end, of the steamboiler are connected by tubes to the nozzles shown at each side of the shells as at 13. Referring more particularly to the parts, figures 9, 9, 9 represent metal doors lined with asbestos, or other non-conducting material, which are provided for the purpose of protecting the headers from the atmosphere.
In a steam-boiler constructed as described, there is a continuous circulation of the Water from the shells through the large pipes 10 into the mud-drum 11 and rear headers 8, through the water tubes 12, into the front headers 8, entering the shells again at the nozzles 13, as indicated by the arrows on the drawing of Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
The combination in a steam-boiler of shellscontaini-ng fire tubes suspended from beams overhead, headers at the front and rear ends of the boiler, therear headers expanded into a mud-drum, water tubes at the sides of shells having their ends expanded into said headers, large pipes connecting'the mud-drum to the bottom of said shells at their rear end, and tubes connecting the front headers to nozzles in sides of said shells at their front ends, all substantially as set forth.
. WILLIAM ROBERTSON.
