Description
a No. 857,199.
' PATENTED JUNE 18, 1907.
H. W. PERRY, PERMANENT WAY jRAIL.
IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII PT. 7. 1905.
HERBERT WILFRED PERRY, OF TRICHINOPOLI, INDIA.
PERMANENT WAY-RAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented June 18, 1907.
Application filed September 7,1905. Serial No- 277,500.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT WILFRED PERRY, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of Trichinopoli, India, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Permanent Way-R ails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to permanent way rails, and more particularly to such rails as are provided with a renewable wearing surface or capping.
In the specification and drawing accompanying British Letters Patent N 0. 4,859 of 1900, ranted to myself, is shown and describe a permanent way rail having a renewable wearing surface or cappin the sides of the latter bein turned inwar to fit the head of the rail. T 's gave an unrollable section to the cap, and necessitated it being slid onto and off the rail from one end.
The object and effect of my present invention is to provide a renewable wearing surface or capping of a rollable section, of such contour that it may be fitted onto the head proper of the rail at any part of its length, the necessary grip or bite being obtained by making the curve or slope of the inner sides of the cap a little stee er, or more vertical, than the sides of the ead ofthe rail, so that when pressed down by the weight of the wheels of an engine or other vehicle running over it, the cap settles down firmly and securely onto the head of the rail.
A drawing illustrating in section a rail, ac-' cording to my invention, accompanies this specification.
Referring to this drawing, a enerally designates the rail head, and b t e renewable wearing surface or capping. As shown, the capping b may be rolled in course of manufacture, and in fitting to head a it is simply placed upon same, at any part of-its length. The inner sides 12 of the cappin b are slightly steeper than the sides a of t e head a, for the pur ose aforementioned.
If desired, t e sides 6 instead of being inclined outward, as shown, may be straight, and the slope of sides a of head a varied slightly to correspond.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A permanent way rail of the section illustrated, comprising in combination a rail head and a renewable and rollable capping, the slope of the inner surfaces of the sides of said ca ping being a little steeper or more vertical than that of the sides of the head of the rail, whereby said capping is secured to the rail head solely by the bite or friction between the two.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERBERT WILFRED PERRY.
