Be it known that we, HENRY EDWIN HODG- SON, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Brookhouse Iron Vorks, Cleckheaton, inthe county of York, England, and JAMES HARTLEY, a subject of 'the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and
residing at Little Peter street, Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Molding-Machines for Use in Casting Metal, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to molding machines in which the box is reversed to enable it to be withdrawn from the pattern late.
The'invention is particular y applicable to such machines as are operated by pneumatic pressure.
The object is to provide a machine of greatly simplified construction, capable of rapid operation, and free from faults caused by the accumulation of sand in any of the working parts.
The invention consists in the particular machine to he hereinafter described and also in various detail improvements in the mechanism in that machine.,
The following are the improved points of construction in this machine-the general method of operation of which is Well known. (l) The improved method of suspending the attern table on toggle links provided with puer nuts and washers and the improved arrangements by which sand is prevented from obtaining access to the working parts. (2) The improved movable drawing table and oil controlling device for regulating accurately the gradual withdrawal of the mold from the pattern. (3) The means provided for preventing the ramming cylinder from being operated when the pattern table is moved away from its position directly over the ramming cylinder. These features will be more clearly understood from the accompanying drawings in which, l
Figure 1 is a part sectional side elevation of a molding machine operated by compressed air in accordance with the invention, the section being taken on the line A B of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an end view of the machine shown in Fig. l; certain details have been omitted from these views for the sake of clearness. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line C--D of Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is an end elevation partly in section, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line E-F of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail view to an enlarged scale -of part of the pattern table carriage showing the means by which the cock supplying air to the ramming cylinder is locked when the carriage is moved away from the running position. Fig. 7 is another view of this device looking in the direction of the arrow X, in Fig. 6.
In carrying the invention into effect according to the particular form shown in the accompanying drawings where all the improvements are shown applied to the same machine, we provide a suitable strong bed plate, a, to which is attached a powerful cross-head, b, carrying a projection, c, against which the molding box, d, is thrust in order to ram the sand. The molding box, ,is mounted upon a rotating table, e, which carries the pattern. The rotating table, e, is carried by toggle links, g, which pass through oscillating sleeves, f, attached to a frame, h, which. is carried by rollers, j, running on rails, llc.
The toggle links, g, are working ts in the holes formed in the oscillating sleeves, f, and the upper ends of the links are furnished with nuts, m, which are shown in Fig. 6. The buffers consist of washers, n, covered by caps, o, screwed on the end of the toggle links,
The nuts, 7n, support the weight of the l table, pattern, molding box and sand, while the sliding toggles, g, permit of the table being forced violently upward when the blow from a pneumatic ram, (1, situated below the ramming head, c, is given. By delivering a blow in this manner the sand in the molding box, d, is rammed by means of the projecting head, c, and the required mold thereby produced. Extensions, s, are provided on the frame, h, these extensions being sufH- ciently long to effectually cover the rails and rollers and thereby prevent any undue wear by the presence of sand on the working surfaces.
The toggle links, g, also form a convenient means of suspending the table, e, and molding box, d, in a manner to avoid any inconvenience in the movements or adjustments by admission of sand to the trunnion or -trunnion slides formerly employed in ma- IOO the box against the rotating table. These catches are shown as arranged for holding the molding box open end-upward, butthey also hold the boxes open end downward.
Below the rails, 7c, and at the opposite ends of the carriage, h, to that at which lthe ramming cylinder is arranged, a pneumatic drawing cylinder, t, is provided, having a head, u, adapted to raise a carriage, fu, from rails, w, placed below the level-of the pattern table rails, k. raised by pneumatic `pressure supplied through the pipe, x, but it is maintained 4in its raised position by hydraulic pressure, that is, theV pressure of a liquid-the liquid 1preferably used, however, is oil.
A chamber, y, (Fig. 3) -located irrimediately below the head, u, is filled with oil and a valve controlled central passage, 2, .leads to the central cylinder, 2, which acts as ahydraulic cylinder while the annulus, 3, above the head, 4, constitutes the pneumatic cylinder. A non-return valve, 5, and a conical stop valve, 6, operated-by aspindle, '7, passing outward and provided with an operating handle, 31, are employed for effecting the control of the oil-flow in and out of thecen- 'tral hydraulic cylinder as hereinafter set forth. The cylinder, t, hasat its lower end layers of fibrous cushioning material, 9, and a cylinder hood, 8, is `also provided to cover the exterior of the cylinder, t, and the exposed working surface of the central head, 4. Packing rings, 10, are placed at the top end of the central head, 4, for the purposeof preventing egress of air from the annulus, 3. A packing gland, 12, is provided to prevent egress of oil from the central hydraulic-cylinder, 2.
The general operation of this machine `is as follows z-The attern is fixedtothepattern table, e, and t e molding boxor flask, d, .is placed over the table'embracing the pattern. Sand is then filled into the flask and the carriage, 7L, moved into the position, shown -in Fig. 1 directly over the ramming cylinder, c. A gas ring burner, 15, (Fig. 2) may be provided below the pattern table for'the purpose of heating the pattern and so lfacilitating the withdrawal of the mold. :Compressed air is then admitted to the ramming cylinder which thereby causes lthe'head, 13, provided with a fibrous cushion, 14, (Fig. 2) to rise. The flask, filled with sand is thus carried forcibly upward against the ramming head, c, and the sand rammed into the contour of the pattern. One or more blows may be given as found necessary. The pattern table with the flask thereon is then lowered on to :the carriage, h, being suspended therefrom `by the toggles, g, and the carriage, h, is removed to the left in Fig. 1. The improvements constitute in the main a machine which is simple in construction and less liable to damage than vmolding 4Inachines of this type hitherto known.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as lnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

2. A sand molding machine having in combination, a revoluble pattern table adapted to carry a sand molding box; toggle link suspension gear for said pattern table a ramming head; and a power cylinder for raising the table to cause the ramming head to ram the sand into the sand molding box; substantially as described.
3. A sand molding machine having in combination a revoluble pattern table, toggle links sup orting said revoluble table, pivoted guifes for the toggle links, a molding box carried by the table, a power cylinder for raising said table, and a stationary ramming head against which the box is projected., substantially as described.
4. A sand molding machine having in combination a revoluble pattern table for carrying a molding box, a power ramming cylinder for raising the table; toggle links supporting said revoluble table; pivoted guides for the toggle links, buffers on said toggle links for avoiding shocks, and a stationary ramming head coacting with the table substantially as described.
5. A sand moldingmachine having in combination a revoluble pattern table for carrying a molding box, a horizontally movable carriage supporting said pattern table, toggle link suspension gear between saidcarriage and the revoluble pattern table, and a fixed ramming head coacting with the table, substantially as described.
6. A sand molding machine having in combination a revoluble pattern table for carrying a molding box, a horizontally movable carriage supporting said pattern table, toggle link suspension gear between said carriage and the revoluble pattern table, guides for the toggle links, said guides being pivotally mounted on the carriage, and a i'ixed ramming head coacting with the table, substantially as described.
7. A sand. molding machine having in combination, a revoluble pattern table for carrying a molding box; a horizontally movable carriaO'e supporting said pattern table; toggle lin i suspension gear between said carriage and table; guides for the toggle links said guide being pivotally mounted on the carriage, bulers on the toggle links for avoiding shock, a iixed ramming head, above the table and a power cylinder for raising the table to cause the ramming head to ram the sand into the mold substantially as described.
8. A sand molding machine having in combination a revoluble pattern table for carrying a molding box g trunnions on the table; links enveloping said trunnions and forming a pivoted sup ort for the table; pivotally carried guides ihr said links; a bracket carrying said guides; a traversable carriage supporting the bracket; rails for said carriage, a iixed ramming head above the table and means for raising the table to cause the head to ram the Sand into the mold, substantially as described. v
9. In combination with a sand molding machine having a pneumatically operated ramming cylinder and a horizontally movable pattern table, a horizontally movable pattern drawing table, a pneumatic drawing cylinder beneath the drawing table, an hydraulic cylinder concentrically arranged with respect to the pneumatic cylinder, a head or plate raised by the pneumatic drawing cylinder adapted to contact with the drawing table, and a piston on said head or plate adapted to work in the hydraulic cylinder, substantially'as described.
10. In combination with a sand molding machine havin a pneumatically operated ramming cylin er and a horizontally movable pattern table, a horizontally movable pattern drawing table, a pneumatic drawing cylinder beneath the drawing table, an hydraulic cylinder concentrically arranged with respect to the pneumatic cylinder, a head or plate raised by the pneumatic drawing cylinder and adapted to contact with the drawin table, a piston on said head or plate adapte to work in the hydraulic cylinder, and a hollow chamber containing the liquid which forms the working agent in the hydraulic cylinder, substantially as described.

In combination with a sand molding machine having a pneumatically operated ramming cylinderand a horizontally movable pattern table, a horizontally movable pattern drawing table, a pneumatic drawing cylinder beneath the table, an hydraulic cylinder concentrically arranged with respect to the pneumatic cylinder, a head or plate raised by the pneumatic drawing cylinder and adapted to contact with the drawin table, a piston on said head or plate adaptecgl to work in the hydraulic cylinder, a hollow chamber havin communication with the hydraulic cylin er for supplying the liquid which Jforms the working agent in said hydraulic cylinder, and a non-return valve in said communication arranged to automatically-admit the liquid to the said hydraulic cylinder.

able pattern table, a horizontally movable pattern drawing table, a pneumatic drawing cylinder beneath said drawing table, an hydraulic cylinder Aconcentrically arranged with respect to said pneumatic cylinder, a head or plate carried by the pneumatic drawing' cylinder, a piston on said head or plate adapted to work in-the hydraulic cylinder, a hollow chamber for containing the liquid which forms rthe working agent in the hy- IOO draulic cylinder having communication with said hydraulic cylinder, a non-return valve arranged in said communication to automatically admit the liquid to the said hydraulic cylinder, and a controlling valve for regulating the eXit of liquid from the said hydraulic cylinder, substantially as described.

In combination with a sand molding ina-chine means for withdrawing the pattern from the mold comprising a table, a guided head located below the table a hollow oil chamber within said head, a passage leading 'from said hollow oil chamber, a centrally disposed cylinder to which said passage leads, non-return and regulating valves governing the ilow of oil -to and rom said cylinder through the said passage, an annular pneu- Inatic piston head (4) and a cylinder adapted to slide over said head substantially as described.
14. In a power sand molding machine having a horizontally movable pattern carriage, and a-fluid operated ramming cylinder means for preventing the accidental admission of Working fluid to the ramming cylinder when the pattern table is not in proper position beneath the ramming head comprising a cock (26) having a handle (28) and a projection (29), a shelf (30) carried by the longitudinally movable carriage co-acting With the projection (29) on the handle7 substantially as described.
