My invention relates to improving the heelpart of a hinged last in strength, external surface, or shape, and general serviceableness. a
One of the most serious difficulties met with in the raetical manufacture and use of niulti-part asts, especially hingedlasts, resides in the'weakening of the heelpart which necessarily results from the numerous saw cuts, holes and rivets to which the heelpart is subjected in order to accommodate it to the deviceswhich are necessary for its construction. For example, the front end thereof is cut obliquely dbwn to the swinging point of the lastand is thence severed along the line of the sliding faces of the forepart and heelpart, a vertical longitudinal saw k erf extends into the front end of the heelpart for the reception of the hinge, one or more rivets extend through the forepart hinge, a vertical spindle hole is provided at or more holes and rivets extend transversely through the heelpart-adjacent the thimble gether. All this honeycombing of the heel weaken it; and when it is remembered that the heelpart-of a last is, at best, small, nar- 1 row, short and frail, the reason is apparent for the extreme difficulty to which we have i alluded. ject to two. serious objections, viz., they weaken the wood by cutting it across the grain at various vital points, and they mutilate the exterior surface, which should be whole and smooth in order not to deface the shoe lining and interfere with the proper manufacture of the shoes.
Accordingly my present invention aims to provide a further in'iproveinent in this line, which secures the desired strength and bracing cflcct without materially weakening the wood or mutilating the smooth external surface of the heelpart where it comes in contactwith the shoe lining.
In carrying out my invention I employ a flared at the proper angle for giving the;
greatest strength of resistance to the complex strains which the various operations above alluded to bring upon the heelpart of a hinged last in manufacturing a shoe.
In the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, I point out further constructional details and advantages of my invention with'reference to the preferred embodiment thereof herein disclosed, and in the appended claims the in vention is still further defined.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a last containing my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional vertical views thereof taken on the line 3, Fig. -1, showing different binding means for the retaining me lnber.
