To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN. E. BELL, of New York, county and State of New York, have inclined tubes are arranged in banksl connecting upper and lower drums, a source of heat being in front of the front bank, and the gasesy being directed in, successive up and down passes among the tubes. y
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, compact and eflicient boiler of this v type in which added heating surface is provided between the banks and so connected as 'to insure a circulation therethrough.
In the drawings, 2' and 3 represent upper transverse steam and water drums, and 4 and 5 corresponding mud drums which are connected with the upper drums by banks of tubes 6 and 7. I have shown five rows of tubes for each bank proper, with the ends of l the tubes 'curved to enter the cylindrical drums. The number of rows in each bank may, however, be varied, though there are preferably at least four rows. The tubes of the banks proper may be made straight if desired, by providing suitable struck-up portions or tube seats in the drums. The lower drums are preferably connected by a row of tubes or nipples 8 and the steam spaces of the steam and water drums are connected by a row of steam circulators or pipes 9. The Water spaces of the steam and water drums are preferably not directly connected with each other, though a row of direct water circulators may be used, if desired.
Between the banks proper, I arrange two rows of tubes 10 and 11 betweenwhich extends the vertical baflie 1.2 resting at its lower end on the pier 13 between the mud drums. The tubes of the row 10 are curved forward at their upper ends to enter the Water space of the frontupper drum 2 and are bent or curved rearwardly at their lower lflow.

The tubes of the row 11 are curved rearwardly at their upper ends to enter the upper drum and are also bent rearwardly at their lower ends 'to enter the rear mud drum. The row of tubes 10 is preferably" close to the front bank, thus leaving a considerable space between the tubes 11 and the front row of tubes 7; and I preferably provide a rearwardly projecting shelf 14 on the baffle 11 which will tend to hold thel gases among the tubes of the rear bank in their downward If the tubes 10 are spaced farther apart from the front bank a shelf-or shelves may be arranged to project forwardly from the baffle 11. A deflector 15 may also be at 'the inside of the front wall to hold the gases in the front bank of tubes; and this defiector or baille brick may also be used at the inside of the-rear baffle or wall 16 forming the front of the outlet flue 17. The outlet port may also be arranged at the lower end of the rear bank, if desired. The space between the tubes 7 and 11 is preferably sufficient to allow the entrance of a man through side ports 18, thus giving access for cleaning andrepairs.
The furnace '19 may be of the ordinary external type, the gases rising among the tubes of the front bank, crossing the top of the baffle and descending among the tubes of the rear bank.
The steam is referably taken off from the 'drum 3 only, t us aiding in preventing the discharge of wet steam. T e feed, water preferably enters the rear upper drum 3, which'is shown-as being fed in through pipe 20. By `connecting the pipes 10 an 11 to the rear mud drum while one set enters the front upper drum and the rear set enters the rear upper drum, I provide a circulation up the front bank of tubes 6 and down the tubes 10 and thence forward with the feed through nipples 8. There will also be circulation u the rear bank of tubes 7 and down throng the tubes 11, which are in a relatively cooler location.
The advantages of my invention result from the peculiar connections of the added tubes between the main banks, which give a positive down circulation from the front uper-drum, thereby relieving it and giving efficient circulation in the added tubes. The

structure is compact, and may be cheaply made, andthe use of a third steam and water drum with its bank of tubes is done away with. The number of tubes or rows added between the banks may be varied, as well as their spacing relative to each other and the main banks. The number of tubes in each bank proper maybe varied, although five rows are preferably used. Direct water connection may be provided between the upper drums and between the lower drums,4 the tubes of the main bank may be either strictly vertical, or inclined in a vertical direction, the. mud drum lnay be in the forni of a donblecompartment drum instead of two separate drums, and many other changes may be made without-departing from my invention.'
I claim zl.' In a. water tube boiler, a plurality of upper transverse steam'and water drums, a plurality of connected transverse mud drums, banks of tubes connecting the upper and lower drums, an added row of tubes between the banks, said tubes entering the front upper drum and the second mud drum, and a batlie in the rear of said added row of tubesV and between it and the rear bank of tubes; substantially as described.

In a water tube boiler, a plurality of upper transverse steam and water drums, a pluralitn of transverse mud drums, banks of tubes connecting the upper and lower drums, and atleast two ladded rows of tubes between the main banks, both of said rows entering the rear mud drum, one row being connected to the i ront upper drum and the other row to the rear upper drum; substantially as described.
3. In a water tube boiler, a plurality of upper transverse steam and water drums, a plurality of transverse mud drums7 banks of tubes connecting the upper and lower drums, at least two added rows of tubes between the main banks, both of said rows entering the rear mud drum7 one row being connected to the front upper drum, the other row to the rear upper drum, and a baffle extending vertically between the two rows of added tubes; substantially as described. p
4. In a water tube boiler,'a plurality of upper transverse steam and water drums, a plurality of transverse connected mud drums, banks ot tubes connecting the upper and lower drums, and at least two added rows of tubes between the main banks, both of said rows entering the rear mud drum, one rowz being connected to the front upper drum and' the other row to the'rear upper drum; substantially as described.
