UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NORMAN MARSHALL, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ASSEMBLING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Original application filed January 19, 1905, Serial No. 241,884. Divided and this application filed September 20, 1905. Serial No. 279,288.
To all 1071 0111, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NORMAN MARSHALL, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Newton, Massachusetts, county of Middlesex, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Assembling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to mechanism especially designed for automatically tightening the screws which hold together the caps and shells which form the casings for incandescent lamp sockets although features of the invention may be embodied in mechanisms designed to operate upon other articles.
In manufacturing lamp sockets the various parts carried by the porcelain base are assembled and the base and attached parts are then placed within the outer shell into which an insulating lining has previously been introduced. The cap into which an in sulating disk has been introduced is then placed over the end of the shell, the securing screws in the cap being passed into the cooperatin slots of the shell. The screws are then tightened, which operation completes the assembling of the socket. IIeretofore the tightening of the screws as well as the other operations involved in assembling the parts of the socket has been a hand operation, requiring skill and dexterity on the part of the operator and also resulting in ununiform and often times detective work.
In practicing the present invention the tightening of the screws is automatically performed by two oppositely arranged screw driving spin-tiles between which the socket is presented with the screws in register with the spindles. The sockets are presented in position between the spindles by a series of jigs constructed to hold the sockets and mounted upon a carrier which may be moved intermittently to bring the jigs successively into position between the screw driving spindles.
The mechanism may be embodied in and form part of an assembling apparatus for assembling the various parts of the socket or other article being acted upon or may be embodied in a separate machine.
The various features of the invention will be set forth in the claims and will be understood from the following detailed description of the mechanism in which I have embodied them which is shown in the accompanying drawings.
l l l In the drawings Figure l is an elevation partly in section of so much of an assembling apparatus as is required to show that part of the mechanism employed for tightening the cap screws of a socket. Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of a screw driver; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are detail views of the for holding and n'esenting the parts to the screw driving mechanisms.
In the machine illustrated in the drawings the mechanisms embodying my invention form a part of an apparatus organized for the convenient and rapid performance of the various operations incident to the assembling of the parts of a socket. In this machine the work is supported and carried by a series of jigs M secured upon a rotary carrier table B and the table is intermittently rotated to bring the jigs successively into position to present the work to the two screw driving spindles by which the cap screws are tightened.
The work carrying M which supports and carries the assembled parts of the socket is provided with a seat m upon which the shoulder 16 of the socket shell rests so that the socket is retained in the proper vertical position upon the The angular position of the socket upon the jig is determined and maintained by fingers m which project inwardly from a vertical arm m and engage the opposite sides of the slot through which the key shaft passes, the upper end of the arm being slotted at m to receive the key shaft.
The jigs M are secured. in a circular series upon the upper face of the table B and by the intermittent movements of the table the parts carried by the jigs are brought successively to the screw driving mechanism. This mechanism is provided. with two oppositely arranged screw drivers 8 carried by spindles 8. Each spindle extends through a hollow driving shaft 8 with which it is connected by means of a pin projecting into a longitudinal slot in the shaft. The shaft is driven by means of a bolt passing over a pulley s which is frictionally connected with the shaft 8 by its engagement with a disk 8 secured to said shaft. Each spindle projects beyond the driving shaft and is provided with a collar 8 having an annular groove which receives pins projecting inward from the arms of a yoke formed on the lower end of a lever s. The lever is operated to advance the spindle and thus bring the screw driver into engagement with the head of the cap screw 17 to tighten said screw by means of a cam s secured to a constantly running shaft 8 and engaging the upper end of the lever, the lever being held in engagement with the cam by a spring 8". Each spindle s is provided with a guard sleeve 8 connected therewith by a pin 8 engaging a slot 8 in the sleeve, the sleeve being pressed yieldingly forward by a spring 8 These sleeves insure the engagement of the screw drivers with the heads of the screws 17 and yield to allow the advance movement of the screw driving spindle as the screws are driven home. The screw driving mechanism is supported upon an arm 3 projecting from the central standard for the table B and is provided with a guide pulley s over which the driving belt passes from one pulley s to the other.
The mechanism for intermittently advancing the table B comprises a ratchet wheel i secured to the underside of the table and having a number of teeth corresponding to the number of jigs upon the table. The ratchet wheel is acted upon by a pawl t pivoted upon a slide 2& and held in engagement with the ratchet wheel by a spring 25. The slide is guided upon a bar 23 carried by an arm t projecting from the central standard for the table and is operated by a cam i The cam is secured to a shaft 25 and engages a roller t carried by the slide and held in engagement with the cam by a spring t. The shaft 25 is constantly driven from a vertical shaft t through bevel gears and the shaft t is driven from a shaft 0 through gears 25 and if.
During the operation of the machine as each jig comes into convenient position in front of the operator, he places a socket in position upon the jig, and the sockets are presented successively to the screw driving mechanism which operates to automatically tighten the cap screw, during the dwell between successive movements of the table. Thus the caps, shells, and current-carrying parts may be rapidly and conveniently assembled and the cap screws quickly and uniformly tightened.
Without attempting to set forth in detail the various forms in which the invention may be embodied, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A screw tightening apparatus comprising two oppositely arranged screw driving spindles, a work support provided with a seat for a socket and means for locating the socket so that the cap screw holes therein will come in proper relation to the screw driving spindles, means for moving the work support to bring the screw holes into line with the screw driving spindles, and mechanism for operating the spindles.
2. A screw tightening apparatus comprising two oppositely arranged screw driving spindles, a series of work supports each provided with a seat for a socket and means for locating the socket so that the cap screw holes will come in proper relation to the screw driving spindles, mechanism for bringing the work supports successively between the screw driving spindles with the screw holes in line with the spindles, and mechanism for operating the spindles.
3. A screw tightening apparatus comprising two oppositely arranged screw driving spindles, a work supporting provided with a seat for a socket shell, fingers on the jig for engaging the sides of the key slot in the shell and holding the shell in position, means for moving the jig to bring the cap screws into line with the screw driving spindles, and mechanism for simultaneously operating the spindles.
4. A work supporting jig for screw tightening apparatus comprising a seat for a socket shell, and fingers arranged to engage the sides of the key slot in the shell.
5. A work supporting jig for screw tightening apparatus comprising a seat for a socket shell, an arm slotted for the key shaft and inwardly projecting fingers arranged to enter the key slot in the shell.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this 5th day of September 1905.
NORMAN MARSHALL.
