SAAIUEL FARMER, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907.
Application filed April 5, 1906. Serial No. 310,057.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL FARMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Hinges; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to batten hinges, especially designed for theatrical use, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
The object of the invention is, mainly, to provide a folding batten or curtain stick, whereby its length can be reduced to one half to facilitate transportation.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention,
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as applied; with the stick extended; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the curtain stick folded; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the hinge locked, with one section of the curtain stick removed; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the hinge unlocked and opened; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the hinge, taken through the locking pin, with the parts locked Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the cur tain suspended. from the batten or stick, shown as arranged in an opening for a stage, and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal. central vertical section of the joint or hinge sections of the batten or stick, showing a portion of the curtain attached.
In these drawings the letter a, designates one section of the batten or curtain stick, and b, the other section thereof. These sections are usually about fifteen feet in length, and when joined are designed to provide a batten about thirty feet long.
0, 0, represents metallic couplings of sleeve form and adapted to receive the ends of the battens, and the bearing portions d, of the hinge sections 6, andf. These couplings are provided with countersunk perforations g, for the passage of screws whereby they are secured to the battens. The margins h, of each of these couplings along its upper surfaces are separated by an interval, slot or passage 7c, which opens to the cleft in the batten in which the curtain is secured, allowing the curtain to pass. 1
The hinge sections 6, and f, are provided with exterior shoulders i, and, extending therefrom, thimble bearings (Z, which are notched at m, to correspond with the passages 7r, of the couplings c, to which they are attached. And these hinge sections have abutting heads p, and hinge lugs g, at the back thereof for the passage of the hinge pintle 8. One of these heads is provided with a front lug t, projecting from its meeting face, and the other head is provided with arecess u, to receive this lug, said recess having abutment ends 12. The projecting lug t, and the abutments of the recess are provided. with alined perforations for the reception of a removable lock pin 2. These lugs and abutments have their perforations drilled neatly with reference to the faces of the hinge heads, so that the pins will hold these faces in close contact.
hen the lock pin is in position engaging the hinge sections 6, andf, the abutting faces 2, and 3, of the hinge heads are brought solidly in contact, and as these meeting faces have an area of several inches and are at right angles to the axial direction of the couplings, the latter, with the battens thereto attached, are held in line with each other, so that they provide a batten or curtain stick which is for its purposes practically solid. When however, it is designed to be transported, the locking pin may be removed, and the batten sections folded upon each other to one-half the length of the extended article.
Having described the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A batten hinge consisting of hinge sec tions having'notched thimble portions and abutting head portions provided with lugs and connecting pintlc, and means for locking the front portions of such sections together.
2. A folding batten connection, consisting l means for locking such hinge sections to- 10 of slotted attachment couplings, and notched gether in abutted engagement. abutting hinge sections provided with means In testimony whereof I affix my signature for locking such sectlons together in abutted in presence of two Witnesses.
enga ement.
3. The combination with batten sections of SAMUEL FARMER' slotted attachment sleeves, abutting hinge Witnesses: sections having notched thimble portions en- JULIA A. MOORE, gaging said batten sections and sleeves, and C. O. CHIPMAN.
