TRACK-SANDING DEVICE.

.Be it known that I, ARTHUR ALBERT CHURCHILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Track-Sanding Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription.
This invention relates to certain improvements in track sanding devices, and more particularly to the specific means whereby the sand may be delivered from the sand box to the track by the force of compressed air supplied from the air brake system or other suitable source. l
The object of the invention is to provide means for controlling the -delivery of the sand, so simple in construction and easily assembled, that it may be manufactured by an ordinary mechanic and the use of all special castings and delicate mechanism obviated.
A further object' of the invention is to provide means whereby the sand delivery pipe may be readily freed from all obstructions should it become clogged, and whereby the cleaning' thereof may be accomplished without necessitating the removal of any of the sand Jfrom the sand box. j; Reference isl to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the iigures, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a car provided with my improved sanding device; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the, operating mechanism thereof.
To more clearly disclose the construction and operation of my improved device, I have illustrated a portion of a car having a car floor 10, and a car body 11 supported upon a suitable truck 12, within which are mounted the Wheels 13. These latter travel upon a track 14, and my improved sanding device is so constructed as to deliver the sand upon the track closely adjacent and in front of the wheels 13. As shown, the car is provided with a sand box 15, and within this sand box is located my improved device for delivering the sand. The car is preferably provided with an air brake system, and connected to this system is an air pipe 16 having a branch 17 entering the sand box through the car iioor and bottom of the sand box. Below the car ijloor I provide a suitable washer 22 in engagement. with the bottom of the car Hoor, and connected to the end of the conduit 21 I provide a sleeve 23 serving to hold the washer 22 in.

Patent:
1. A track sanding device, comprising a sand box, a conduit extending through the lIO bottom of the box and terminating at a point adjacent the top thereof, means for normally closing the upper end of said pipe; a branch conduit entering the first mentioned conduit adjacent the bottom of the box, said last mentioned conduit being provided with an opening in communication with the interior of the box, andmeans for forcing the contents of the box through the last mentioned conduit into the iirst mentioned one.
2. A track sanding device, comprising a sand box, a conduit terminating adjacent the top of the box and leading to a point adjacent the car wheel, a removable cap normallv closing the upper end of said conduit, a branch conduit within said box and lying substantially parallel to the bottom thereof and having one end in communication with the first mentioned conduit and having a V-shaped notch in its upper side, and an air pipe having a deliverynozzle terminating within the branch conduit and below said opening therein. j f e 3. A track sanding device, comprising a sand box, a vertically disposed conduit extending through the bottom of the box and terminating adjacent the top thereof, a branch conduit entering the first mentioned conduit adjacent the bottom of the box, said last mentioned conduit having an open end and a V-shaped opening in its upper surface, and an air delivery nozzle extending within the open end and terminating below said opening.
