To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT H. BEEBE and ISAAK R. CONGOFF, both citizens of the United States, and residents of St. Johns, in
the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and Improved Hydraulic Elevator, of which. the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a IO new and improved hydraulic elevator arranged to insure full utilization of the power applied by reducing the friction of the surrounding parts to minimum, and by causing the piston in the hydraulic cylinder to exert at all times a straight-line pull on the flexible connection employed for turning the hoisting drum, and to allow the latter to travel bodily on its shaft to exert a straight-line pull on the hoisting rope.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an inverted plan view of the improvement; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section of the same, on the line 3*3 of Fig. 2 and Fig. d is a similar view of the same, on the line 4 l of Fig. 2.
The hydraulic elevator, as shown in the drawings, is mounted on an approximately rectangular main frame A provided, at its corners, with standards A for suspending the frame from a ceiling or other support. The rear cross bar A of the main frame A is engaged by the elongated eye B of the rear head B of the hydraulic cylinder B resting, near its forward end, on a cross bar A attached to the si le bars A of the main frame A. A pivot pin C, preferably in the form of a set screw, engages the eye B and the cross bar A to allow the cylinder B to swing laterally for the purpose hereinafter more fully described. In the cylinder B is mounted to 5 reciprocate a piston D having its piston-rod D extending through a stulling box B arranged in. the front head B of the hydraulic cylinder B, and the outer end of the piston red D is connected with one end of a rope-or similar flexible connection E winding on the small portion F of a hoisting drum F journaled loosely and free to slide in a transverse direction on the front cross bar A of the main frame A. On the large portion F of the hoisting drum F winds the hoisting rope G, passing over a pulley H journaled in a hanger I'l attached to the ceiling or other support.
The front end of the cylinder B is connected by a pi )e .l with the controlling valve J for controlling the water or other fluid passing into and out of the cylinder B. The valve J consists essentially of a valve casing J, in which is mounted to turn a valve plug J provided with a handle J under the control of the operator, to enable the latter to turn the plug into either a closed position, an admission position or an exhaust position. The casing J is connected by a supply pipe K with a suitable source of water or other fluid pressure supply, and from the casing J extends an exhaust pipe K for carrying off the discharged water or other fluid to a suitable place of discharge.
1n the valve plug J 2 is formed a port a. for connecting either the pipes K and l or the pipes K and I with each other. Now, when the valve plug J is in the position as shown in Fig. 2, then water or other fluid under pressure can pass into the cylinder B by way of the controlling valve J, to move the piston 1) in a rearward direction; and when the valve plug J is turned so that the port (1 connects the pipe I with the pipe K, then the water or other iluid in the cylinder B can pass out of the same by way of the controlling valve and the discharge pipe K.
Into the rear end of the cylinder B opens an air vent pipe L having an air inlet valve N to allow air to pass into the rear end of the cylinder B at the time the piston D moves forwardly on the return stroke. The pipe L is also connected by a branch pipe in with the discharge pipe ii, to allow air to pass through the latter, to insure a free flow of the discharged water.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the valve plug J is moved alternately into admission and exhaust positions, as above described, then a reciprocating motion is had of the piston D in the cylinder B, and as the piston rod D is-connected with the rope E, it is evidentthat the latter unwinds and winds up alternately on the reduced ortion F of the hoisting drum F. Now, as t e convolutions of the rope E range one alongside the other, it is evident that a straight-line ull is at all times obtained, as the cylinder is free to swing in a transverse direction on'the cross bar A and the hoisting drum F is free to slide transversely on its shaft. It will also be noticed that as the hoisting rope G winds up and unwinds on the por tion F of the hoisting drum and its convolutions range one alongside the other, it is evident that a straight-pull can only be obtained on the load relative to the guide pulley H on the transverse shifting of the hoisting drum F. Thus full compensation is had by the swinging of the cylinder B in a transverse direction for the variation of the ropes E and G in winding up on the hoisting drum F, so that at all times a straight-line pull is obtained and consequently the power applied is utilized to the fullest advantage.
The device is very simple and durable in construction and is not liable to get easily out of order.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A hydraulic elevator comprising a cylinder containing a piston and mounted to swing laterally, a hoisting drum mounted to turn and to move laterally, and a flexible connection between the hoisting drum and the piston rod of the said piston.
2. A hydraulic elevator comprising a cylinder containing a iston and mounted to swing laterally, a hoisting drum mounted to turn and to move laterally, a flexible connection between the hoisting drum and the piston rod of the said piston, and a hoisting rope connected with the said hoisting drum.
3. A hydraulic elevator comprising a frame, a cylinder pivotally connected at its rear end on the said frame and mounted to swing transversely on the said frame, a piston reciprocating in the said cylinder and having its piston rod extending through the front end of the said cylinder, a hoisting drum, and a flexible connection between the said drum and the said piston rod.
4. A hydraulic elevator comprising a frame, a cylinder pivotally connected at its rear end on the said frame and mounted to swing transversely on the said frame, a piston reciprocating in the said cylinder and having its piston rod extending through the front end of the said cylinder, a hoisting drum mounted to turn and to slide transversely on the said frame, and a flexible connection between the said drum and the said piston rod.
5. A hydraulic elevator comprising a frame, a cylinder pivotally connected at its rear on the said frame and mounted to swing transversely on the said frame, a piston reciprocating in the said cylinder and having its piston rod extending through the front end of the said cylinder, a hoisting drum mounted to turn and to slide transversely on the said frame, a flexible connection between the said drum and the said iston rod, a guide pulley journaled in fixed bearings, and a hoisting rope passing over the said ulley and winding on the said hoisting rum.

A hydraulic elevator comprising a frame, a cylinder pivotally connected at its rear end on the said frame and mounted to swing transversely on the said frame, a piston reciprocating in the saidcylinder and having its piston rod extending through the front end of the said cylinder, a hoisting drum, a flexible connection between the said drum and the said piston rod, a fluid controlling valve connected with one end of the said cylinder for controlling the ingress and egress of the fluid under pressure, and an air inlet valve for the other end of the said cylinder.
7. A hydraulic elevator comprising a frame, a cylinder pivotally connected at its rear end on the said frame and mounted to swing transversely on the said frame, a pis ton reciprocating in the said cylinder and having its piston rod extending through the front end of the said cylinder, a hoisting drum, a flexible connection between the said drum and the said piston rod, a fluid controlling valve connected with the said cylinder and having a supply pipe and a discharge ipe, and an air inlet valve connected with the said cylinder and the said discharge pipe.
