JOSEPH R. VALENTINE, OF SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
MATTRESS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 11, 1907;
Application filed June 14. 1904. Serial No. 212,531.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. VALEN- TINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mattresses and has special reference to an improved sanitary covering for the ordinary type of stuffed and tufted mattresses, whereby the same can be kept in a better sanitary condition than ordinarily, and also retained in proper shape at all times and under all conditions. In the ordinary tufted mattress indentures or depressions are necessarily left where the tufts are placed, thus forming pockets which harbor foreign substances andlilth and render it impracticable to thoroughly clean the mattress Without entirely remaking the same. Furthermore, the ordinary tufted mattress must also be made considerably smaller than desired, in order to allow for expansion as it becomes compressed.
The foregoing objections to the ordinary type of tufted mattresses are overcome by the present invention, which provides a covering for the entire mattress body which is held stretched thereover by the expansion of such body. In this connection, the invention contemplates a covering which is of nonelastic material, but of such a nature that the .same can be readily removed, washed, and
replaced without disturbing the mattress proper or any part thereof. Furthermore, the improved covering provides a perfectly smooth bedding surface and retains the mattress body against expansion or spreading.
- With these and other objects in view which will more readily appearoas the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed. I
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress incased within a covering contemplated by the present invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showin the covering partly removed; Fig. 3 is an e ar ed detail view showing more clearly the c osure or fastening for the cover opening, and the inside -flap arrangement.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in the several figures. of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates an ordinary stuil'ed and tufted mattress of any wellknown construction, but which on account of the present invention may be formed of fabric of a soft or more pliable nature, and not of as an expensive quality as that ordinarily employed in mattress making. This makes the mattress softer and more elastic than ordinarily, and the shape and size thereof is obtained through the employment of the separate detachable slip cover 2.
The slip cover 2 is made of any suitable fabric suflicientlystrong, and of non-elastic or non-stretchable nature, in order to firmly hold the mattress body 1 in its original size and shape. The separate slip cover 2 consists of a suitable number of fabric pieces strongly stitched together at their meeting edges by the box cover of the same figuration as the body 1 of the mattress proper, but preferably in carrying out the inventionthe cover 2 is made of slightly less area or size than the mattress body, in order to receive the latter under slight compressure, and whereby the cover will be held stretched tight all about the mattress body andpresent a perfectly smooth body surface, besides serving to hold the mattress against abnormal expansion or spreading. I
To provide for applying and removing the cover 2, the latter is provided in one end portion thereof with a transverse opening 3 along the edges of which are formed a series of eyelets 4 which receive the securing lacing 5 for closing the opening and holding the cover properly upon the mattress body. At the same time, by loosening up and rcn'ioving the lacing the cover may be readily slipped off of the mattress body for cleansing or other purposes. To make a perfect clos ire for the opening 3, one edge portion of said opening has attached thereto an inside closure llap or tongue 6 which extends entirely across the opening 3 at the inside of the cover.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is A mattress consisting essentially of compressible stuffing, a cover permanently fastened about and inclosing the stuffing; said stuffing and cover being tufted, whereby depressions are formed in opposite sides of the same, and an auxiliary slip or removable cover, of non-stretching material and of smaller size than said compressible mattress, removably arranged on the stuiling and permanent cover which is forced under com- 2 see 74s Eression into said removable cover, the latter tions of the edge of the cover at opposite sides aving an opening extending throughout the of the opening, for the urpose set forth. 10 length of one of its edges and also having a' In testimony whereo?
