ZLOAD-EQUAILIZER. FOR GENERATORS. V
'A pplication filed March 26,

- Be known that I, SEVERND. SPRQNG, a [citizen of the United States,' residing atthe-county ofKings and State .g of New-York, have invented a eertain' a 'tornatically a uniform distribution of load ween generating crating in'par- A nits (31p 81 cl, oranypredetermine distributionof' 'lgad. among saidunitsi The principle of the invention isto utilize the difierenig 'lueto abnormal load on any 1 one unit, asic'ompared with the .averageload "(man the others, inorder to' actuate means for bringing'the abnormal'load back to nor "are combined a plurality 0 mal. One embodiment of this principle is hereinafterset forth in ana paratus wherein generating units and means controlled by the establishment of adifierential between the average load on each of said units, and'the actual load on one a l indicate like parts. 4 v
of them, for causing said last named unit to assume its distributive share or some predetermined share of the'whole'load. A a .Intl'ie accompanying drawings-Figure 1v is an elevation of my ap aratus.- Fig. Z is a vertical section on the e z; m. 'of a Big. 1. 3 is a plan view and Fig. 4 is an iflarge'd detail view showing the device for ifiiichanically connecting two or more of the levers 6. Fig. 5 illustrates diagranunatically one device through whichin my presentapparatus, a dynamo may be regulated by its associated motor.

- Upon the base l are two solenoids A, B, connected in series with the three phase gencrating unit C. The dbre 2 of solenoid A is supported upon one arm of a lever 3 pivoted in standard i. The core 5 'of solenoid B is supported upon one arm of a lever 6, pivoted in standard '7. The oppositearm of lever 6 has a yoke 8, in the arms of which are'contact screws :9 and 10. The opposite arm 1 1 of lever Sextends between said screws 9 and 10.
The parts so far. described are associated; as statediwith generating unit 0, which is one of the units operating ill-parallel. A similar a paratus is associated withevery other unit.

control pivoted levers'and contacts, the
are supports 12, and in the scveral supports I2 is journaled a rock shaft 1.3,from whih extend fixed arms 1'4. At the end of each rod '15 which is received in a block- 1-6, pivotmeans of the screw 17 r The lever arms 11 form circuit terminals and are all connected to one conductor of the main or bus bar ISJThe contact screws 9 and 10 are also circuit terminals and are respectively connected through the reversely wound field coils 19, 20, and armature of a motor 21, to, the othercomluctor of said main or bus bar.
The solenoids A, B, D, E, etc., are all exactly similar. Hence, if any pair as A, B, be considered separately, (the screw 17 being released) it is obvious, that While the contact screws 9 and 10 on lever 6 and the endll of lever 3 will move as the load varies 'their relative position will remain the same; and so long as the load on A and B remains unchangeil said parts will not make electrical contact. li,rl owever, all of the clamping screws '17 are tightened, thus )reventing airy ifiS-lti, then the tact screws carried thereby, will be controlled, not by the load of any. one unit C, F, etc., but by the-average load on all of the units,.and the position of said levers 6, and hence of said screws, will depend upon'said average load. It the load on each unit equals its share of the whole load, then the circuit terminal or end 11 oteach lever 3 will maintain its relative positie'n with respect to its associatedeontact screws 9 and 10 and make contact with neither. Butif the load ;on any one unit becomes either greater or less hus, as shown in Fig. 3,-the solenoids D, E,
11 of lever 3 associated with that unit will same as already described, and are connected In series w1th generating unit F. The dotted c rcles G and H indicate solenoids connected Extending upwardi'rom each standard 7 'ed, as shown in Fig. 4, in a slot in the lever 6. The rod'may be clamped in block' 16 by,
arm 14 is pivoted/la downwardly depending than its share of the .whole load, then the end move with respect-toconta'ct screws Bl-and y in the opposite direction; and carr 'ng a;
10, to close circuit with-one screw or the other',.with the result that the motor associated therewith receives current from main 18 to cause it to rotate in one direction or the other. The motor may then control in any suitable'way that unit until it again takes care of its pro er share, or some predetermined share, of the load.
; io' It will be observed that the armatures' of magnets ALDYG. are not mechanically connected and that each of said magnets is free tomov'e its armature and hence the lever 11 I controlled thereby in accordance with the 1 5 load on itself. ,If this load coincides with the average load which has set lever 6 in posi- :tion,.- then the end of lever 11 will not make contact with either terminal 9 or 10 carried by 6.. But su pose the'l oad on any dynamo is. in excess 0 the average: Then tliemagnet A D or G, controlled by that particular I 'dynamo displace its lever 11 to make contact .one of the two terminals carried by its opposite lever 6 and circuit will be es- .2'5 tablis'hed through the motor to effect proper regulation. .The point to be noted is that while themagnets B.F. H are mechanically connected, the magnetsA D G are-not.
.- Hence adifierential'is produced between the result of all the ma 'nets B F H acting separately; And this erential regulates the dynamo controlling the particular magnet A -D or G. One wa' ofeffecting this motor con trol is illustrate in Fig. 5.
3 arepresents an engine, which actuates the dynajnio C. The engine valves at b, may be controlled by the linli 0, connected to the piv-.
. 'otcdjarm d, which is connected in the usual way to theflsleeve e of a ball governor f. And 4 the governorfin any suitable manner (not shownlis driven by the engine. Connected j bylink g tothe free endof arm-d is a shaft it having a rounded head p, K'voted at i to any fixed sup ort'j upon "whic support the field I45, coils 19 o the motor are fixed.
" -21 is the motor armature fast upona threaded sleeve k, the end of which may bear against-a collar'l fixed on shaft h. a On sleeve is is a nut mha'vi'ng'a sleeve n which as the.
5.0 nutfinoves travels on'a fixed guide bar 0. In this way rotation of the not on the sleeve k is revented. [As the motor armature-rotates in one direction or the other, the sleeve is rorates with itand hence the nut m is caused to I 5 move, in one direction or the other along said -sleeve 1c,- thus varying, through the linkage, thc amount of Wei ht .actiri' upon the gov- (011101 sleeve e, an hence tie effect ofthe governor upon the engine valves to vary the engine 'speedfand' thus the s eed of rotation of the armature of, dynamo v Connected toathe lever 3 are two inclined v guide arms'fll, ca g a weight 23, which may be adjusted byt e screw 24.. Connected 6 5 to lovers 6 arcsiuular guide arms 25, inclined weight 26,-which may be adjusted y the screw 27'. By ad'usting the weights 23 and 26 the cores 2 an ,5 maybe balanced, or by the samemeansl 'maychange at will the 7b share of the load which any unit may assume.
By shifting the weights so a to exert greater or less average, a gre; arm load will-be maintained-on the associated unit, and in this way said unit may be over or under-loaded at udll. y The rods 15 are clamped by screws 17 at points equidistant from their pivot connec tions to arms 14. If a unit is out of service,
its associated apparatus is mechanically disconnected from that belonging .to the other units byreleasing the screw 17,.thus leaving the rod 15 to play freely up and down in its block 16.
