Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, RICHARD VAN R. SIZ'L,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident ci Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented anew and, Iniproved Electric Controller, of which the fol: lowingds a full, clearj and exact description.
The invention vices tor electric motors, and its object is to provide a new and improved electric controller, more especially designed for use on electric street cars and otherielectric motor :long life to the vide an exceedin the said members tor the proper transmis- ;slon olf electricityjl j The' invention consists of novel features land parts and c oinbinationsof the same, lw-hlch will be more fully described herelnl' after and then pointed out in the claims.
A 'practical embodiment of the invention. is represented in the ings forming a part ci which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional plan view ot' the improvement as applied to an electric street car; Fig, 2 is a side elevation of the same, part of the box being broken out, and Fig. 3 isan enlarged cross section. o1" the in'iprovcni ent on 'tjieline 33 of Fig. l j
n the bX'ifl is mounted to turn the usual shaft B underj the control ,of the motorman, and on the said vsliatt B are secured the contact plates Q, lai-ranged in staggered form, to control the power of the electric current for the motor in the usual manner.' Each of the contact pates C is made in segmental shape and is eti-ranged at a right angle to the axis of the `slllatt B, and the said contact plate C is adapted to pass between contact jaws D, D a bracket F secured to the insulated post G arranged' .in the motor b'oX A, each bracket bei'ng connected in the usual manner with a conducting Wire Hfas plainly indicated in Fi', 2.
i'he contact jaws D, D are curved in op posits directions, so as to permit the contact plate C to readily pass between the said jaws trom either side thereof on turning the shaft B correspondingl r. The contact jaws j D and D are provide with extension arms relates to hand operated. de-
contactfmeinbers and to proly strong contact between accompanying draw- 1 this specification, in l vfulcrumed on a pivot E held on l j D2, D3, between each of which is arranged a vspring l for moving the contact jaws D, j D `toward each other, so as to insure at all l times a firm contact between the jaws D, l D and the contact plate C when the latter is l passed between the contact jaws. By'hav- .ing the contact jaws D and D fulcrumed on the pivot E, it is, evident that the jaws can slightly swing up and down so as'to readily accommodate themselves according ,to the j position of the contact plate C, that is, to j allow for any discrepancies in the position of l l l l the contact j swinging-motion of the jaws D and D is limited by a stop J secured to or forming an in- ;'tegral part of the bracket F between the jaws near the pivot E, as plainly indicated in the drawings. From the foregoing it will be seen that both the top and bottom surfaces oi the contact plate (j are engaged by the rounded oli' faces of the two contact jaws D and D, so as to insure at all times an exceedingly strong contact between the said jaws, for the properv transmission of the electricity.
'lhe device is very simple and durable in l construction and can be readily applied to l electric controllers as now in use. l Having thus described my invention, I l claim as new and *desire to secure by Letters l l on the said shaft in staggered form., an insu.
, lated post, brackets secured on the said post' l opposite the said Contact plates, each bracket plate C on the shaft B. The' and projectingj having a horizontally disposed pivot and an integral stop, and a pair or" spring-pressed Acontact jaws fulcrumed on'each pivot and j adapted to be engaged by the corresponding i contact plate, the said tween the aws to hold the same in central stop extending be-- position relative to the corresponding conj tact plate, for the latter to readily enter the l jaws, the stop permitting 'tree movement of the jaws when opened by the contact' plate. In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specication in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. RICHARD VAN R. SILL.-
