J Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 7,1907. Serial No. 351,033.
Patented June 11, 1907.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. KING, a l suitable arms 4 which are hinged at 5 to the citizen rof the United States, residing at l back 2 of the dipper, and provided with suit- Marion, in the county of Marion and State of ,i
Ohio, have. invented certain new and usei'ul Im rovements in Excavating-Dippers, oi
which the following is a specification, reference beinghad therein to the accompanying drawings( The present invention relates to excavating dippers of the type commonly employed with steam shovels and dredges. In clippers of this character the front is ordinarily made in one piecewith the side portions of the dipper and 'consists ofcomparatively thin sheet metal. This sheet metal front is provided at its upper edgev with a lip or mouth piece which is secured thereto and is of greater thickness than the body portion of the front. This sheet metal fron-t is not ol suiiicient strength and rigidity to withstand t strain. im osed upon 1t and it isnecessa to provi e the same with large and heavy teeth, the inner shank of which must extend to the bottom of the bucket in order to stiii'en and stren then the front sufficiently to enable it to withstand the strain placed upon it.
These teeth, when they become badly worn,
must `be discarded and replaced by new teeth, and, as the saine are constructed of a high grade steel, the expense of thus replacing the te'etlis considerable.
The object of the gesent invention is to provide a iii per of t s characterl having a comparative y heavy front which is detachably secured to the side portions of the dipper and in which the li will be formed integral with the front w ch is formed of a hard,strong steel adapted to withstand a great deal of wear and of such strength and stiffness as to permit the use of comparativel;1 small short teeth.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction to be hereinafter described, and then more fully pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l1 is a top plan view of a dipper cmiodying ,z uy invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof; and FigA is abottoni plan View' of the saine.
In these drawings, I have illustrated iny invention as embodied in one form of di )per which consists of side portions 1 and a ack the ends of the bail 7.
able locking mechanism, as shown at 8, wherebyv the bottom can 'be secured in its closed position and readily released when it is desired to discharge the contents of the dipper. The side portions 1 are provided with suitable brackets 6,' to which are hinged That part oi' the dipper so far described is of ordinary construction and forms no part oi' the present invention. Y
' The front 9 of the-,klipper is formed, referably by casting, of hard, strong stee such as manganese steel, which possesses great strength and stiffness. This front piece hasits side portions 10 turned at substantially right angles thereto and secured to the side ortions 1 of the dipper by means of suitable olts or rivets 11, whereby the saine can be readily. detached there-troni when it is desired to renew the saine. The upper edge or lip 12 of the front is formed integral with the body portion thereof which 1s of suoli strength and rigidity as to permit the use of comparatively srnail teeth 13, which ar provided with Shanks 14 extending on opposite sides of the li l2 and rigidly secured thereto by means o suitable rivets or bolts 15. The lip 12 is rovided with a series of recesses 16 il 2, and is provided with a bottoni 3 carried by 5 5 formo in the upper edge thereof andA adaptrovidcd near its lower end with an aior- I l turcd late 18 which is ad aptcd to cooperatel with t ic locking mechanism 8.
The dippcr herein described can be provided at a comparatively sniull cost and the parts which are subjected to wcar are of such strength and hardness as to enable tlicin to withstand a great deal oi' wear and to last for a long time, and further, the portion which is subjected towcar is detachably socured to thc body portion of the dipper, whereby it can be readily removed and renewed in case it docs become worn or broken. Further, the front is of such strength and stiil'ness as to permit the use of relatively small, light teeth which can be readily removed and renewed when Worn. As the wear on these teeth comes principally upon the point the small teeth employed with the presentdipper will last substantially as long as thel large heavy teeth. used in the ordinary form ol' clipper, thereby greatly reducing the cost of renewingy these teeth.
lwish it to be. understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, for obvious modilicafions will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is1- l. A clipper of the character described, comprisingr a body portion and a front de tachably secured thereto, substantially described.
2. A dipper ol the character described, comprising a body portion, a front detach ably secured to said body ortion, and a lip formed integral with sai front7 substantially as described.
3. A. dipper of the character described comprising a body portion, and a front of l cast metal secured thereto, described;
4. A dipper 0f the character described comprising a body portion, a front of cast metal, and teeth secured to the up er edge of said front, substantially as descri ed;
5. A dipper of the character described com rising a body ortion, a front of hard rigidp steel det-achab y secured thereto, teeth secured to the upper end of said front and having Shanks extending on the o posite sides thereof, and vprojections on said front engaging the op osite sides of said Shanks, substantially as escribed.
6. In a clipper of the character described,
substantially as y a body portion comprising side Walls, back and bottom portions, aV front of relatively heavy casting detachably secured to said side Walls, a lip formed integral with said front, and relatively small teeth detachably substantially as d esecured to said lip, scribed.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature W. R. WADDELL. E. J. WITTHFF.
