ROTARY TAKE-UP FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB DIEHL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Take-Ups for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rotary take-ups for sewing machines and more particularly to rotary take-ups of the character disclosed in Letters Patent No. 669,638, dated March 12, 1901, in which the take-upmakes two continuous revolutions to each reciprocation of the needle-bar and performs but one take-up or stitch-tightening operation during such time, the take-up operating to seize or pick up the thread at each alternate rotation and entirely cast off said thread during the intermediate rotations. Cooperating with the take-up for the purpose of enabling it to thus alternately seize and cast off the thread are certain thread controlling or positioning devices, one of which is reciprocatory and attached to the needle-bar of the machine and the others stationary and attached to the faceplate of the machine. These devices, in the operation of the machine, act during one revolution-of the take-up to hold the thread in a position across the path of its beak whereby the thread will be engaged and acted upon thereby, and during the second revolution of the take-up act to hold the thread away from the path of its beak so as to prevent the thread being seized thereby and permit of its being entirely cast from the take-up during such second revolution.
The thread is cast off by the take-up when the latter has performed about three fourths of its second revolution and at a time when the looper or shuttle is expanding the needlethread loop and carrying it around to the loop discharging or castoff side of the same. As it is necessary that the slack thread should be controlled during such time and'until the thread loopis cast off by the looper, a socalled auxiliary take-up spring of usual construction is providedfor controlling the slack at such time. The use of springs or springactuated parts, however, as well understood, are undesirable for operation at very high rates of speed, and it has thereforebeen one of the objects of my present invention to avoid the necessity of the use of an auxiliary spring take-up in connection with the main rotary take-up, as disclosed in the said prior patent. This object I secure by locating a fixed or stationary device in such position relative to the take-up as to receive the thread when it is cast therefrom and properly control the slack therein in the manner as-ac' complished by the said auxiliary spring takeup of the patent.
Another feature of my present invention is the use of the said stationary slack-thread controlling device as a guide or controller for cooperation with the reciprocatory'controller carried by the needle bar in locating the thread in a position to be seized by the beak of the rotary take-up at each alternate rotation of the same, the position of this stationary controller device relative to the take-up and to the said reciprocatory controller being such as to enable it to perform both of the functions referred to, i. e. controlling the slack in the thread and positioning the same for engagement by the take-up, in the best and most desirable manner.
A further feature of my resent invention is the provision of a device or preventing the thread, in the event of its accidental brcak age, from being wound or otherwise entangled in the take-up, the device for performing such function in my'preferred form of construction consisting of a part or extension of the said stationary thread-controller which extends into the space between the two disks or wheels of the take-up and around the end of which the broken end of the thread leading from the spool will be thrown.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front end view of the arm of a sewing machine with my invention applied thereto, showing the position occupied by the parts at the beginning of the take-up operation. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are similar views with my improved controller device removed, showing the position occupied by the parts at different times during the take-up operation. Fig. 6 is also a similar View, but
with my improved controller device in posi- IOC tion and its supporting plate broken away,
showing the position of the parts as the thread is received by the controller just subsequent to its cast off by the take-up. Fig. 7 is a sectional view through the front end of chine, comprising the arm A and supporting bed-plate A, the rotary shuttle or looper B, the vertically reciprocatory needle-bar and the tension device E, are all as found in the well known Standard sewing machine.
The rotary take-up supported at the front end of the arm A is of substantially the same construction as that disclosed in the said prior patent before referred to, the same consisting of two skeleton disks or wheels d and (Z having a thread-passage therebetween and being connected together by pins or studs d (i (1 d, and d", which serve as take-up and thread-controlling crank-pins; The inner wheel or disk d is attached to the forward end of the rotary take-up shaft (1 by a set-screw d and a clamping-washer d. The outer wheel or disk (1 is provided with a thread seizing beak or hook (i and forward of said beak or hook with an inclined thread guide and guard (1 the forward end (1 of which extends inwardly into engagement with the inner wheel d5 of the take-up. Between the inclined thread guide and guard (i and the portion (Z of the outer wheel of the take-up is a gate or thread passage (1 leading from the space (1, in which latter a bight of the needle-thread is carried during the main part of the second revolution of the take-up, as will hereinafter be more fully de scribe The rotary take-up shaft d, in the present instance, is journaled in the arm A and extends from the front to the rear end thereof, this shaft adjacent to its rear end being provided with a small sprocket-wheel D secured thereon which is engaged by a driving-belt 6 running from a larger sprocket-wheel (1 carried by the lower driving-shaft a through the medium of a crank connection 6 the relative size of the said sprocket-wheels being such as to insure the take-up shaft "performing two revolutions to each revolution of the drivingshaft or to each reciprocation of the needlebar driven from said shaft, in the same manner as described in the patent hereinbefore referred to.
The devices for cooperating with the takeup in controlling the thread comprise a reciprocatory controller a in the form of an eyelet carried by the needle-bar, a stationary guide 0/ attached to the faeeplate adjacent to the lower edge of the take-up and having its thread engaging edge inclined outwardly to a point in front or forward of the outer face of the take-up, and the stationary con troller F of my present invention which, as
seameherein shown, is in the form of a thread-engaging arm carried by a supporting-plate F in a position opposite the take-up and within the peripheral line of the same. The end of this controller arm F, as most clearly shown in Fig. 7, projects into the space between the take-up disks through an opening in the center of the outer disk, and the supportingplate F which carries the controller is preferably made so as to cover the major portion of the face of the take-up and serve as a guard therefor.
The 0 eration of the invention is as follows: A ter a loop of needle-thread has been carried around the shuttle or looper B and is about to be cast off thereby, at which time the needle has risen to the top of its stroke, the needle-thread, which at this time extends between the stationary controller F and the reciprocatory controller 0, is held by such controllers or guides in a position across the path of movement of the beak or book of the take-up so as to be seized thereby, as shown in Fig. As the take-up now continues its movement from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, which is about a third of a revolution or somewhat less, it operates to draw up and complete the stitch. During this take-u operation one limb of the thread-loop is in front of the outer take-up disk or wheel d, while the other limb thereof is in the thread-passage between the disks or wheels (Z and Z of the take-up. As the takeup continues its rotation from the position shown in Fig. .2 to that shown in Fig. 3, during which time the needle is descending, the thread is engaged by the pins (l and and so controlled thereby that there will be no objectionable slack thread to get in the way of the needle, one of the said pins, indicated at (i being radially adjustable within a slot in the take-up in order to regulate its control of slack thread according to the thickness of the work being operated upon. As the takeup now continues its movement from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 4, during which it has entered on its second revolution, that limb of the thread loop formerly outside or in front of the takeup has been guided over the pin into the space between the two disks or plates of the take-up, while the other limb of the thread-loop has been guided over the inclined guide (1" into the space (Z in the outer disk and has also been moved outwardly from the face of the take-up by the inclined guide-plate a, so as to have permitted the beak or book of the take-u to pass the thread without seizing it. Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a sewing machine, the combination with stitch-forming devices including a needle and a loopcr, of a rotary take-up having means operative to cast the thread therefrom at certain predetermined times, and a thread controller independent of the take up and being operative to engage the thread as it is castv off by the take-up and control the slack therein during the descent of the needle and thereafter release said thread, the said controller being located in front of the take-up and having a thread guiding arm extending inwardly toward the take-up to receive the thread therefrom.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination with a rotary take-up comprising two separated disks having an intermediate take-up pin, of a stationary slack-thread controller supported in a position ad acent to said take-up and having a threathguiding arm extending into the space between the disks of the take-up, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a sewing machine, the combination with a rotary take-up device comprising two separated disks having an intermediate take-up pin, of a stationary slack thread isaid take-up and having a controller supported in a position adjacent to thread-guiding arm extending into the space between the disks of the take-up and at an angle with respect to the axis of the latter, for the purpose set forth.

In a sewing machine, the combination with a rotary take-up comprising two separated disks or wheels having an intermediate take-up pin, of a stationary guard-plate supported in a position in front of the said takeup and provided with an arm extending into the space between the disks or wheels of the take-up, for the purpose set forth.
In a sewing machine, the combination with the stitch-forming devices, of a rotary take hp comprising two separated disks having an intermediate take-up pin, means co-operative with said take-up or casting or disengaging the thread therefrom at certain predetermined times, and two thread controllers cooperative with .said take-up to hold the thread in a position to be engaged thereby, one of said controllers having an arm extending across the path of movement of the take-up, for the purpose set forth.
6. In a sewing machine, the combination with stitch-forming devices, of a rotary take-up, two thread controllers co-operative with said take-up to hold the thread in a position to be engaged thereby, one of said controllers being stationary and the other being reciprocatory, and a guard supported in a position in front of the take-up and carrying the said stationary thread controller.
7 In a sewing machine, the combination with a rotary take-up comprising two separated disks having an intermediate take-up pin, of means supported in a position in front of the said take-up and provided with an arm extending into the space between the disks of the take-up, for the purpose set forth.
