My invention re ates to an' improvement on a bottle sto per which I have,invented etters Patent of the United States, No. 829,341, were issued to me on the 21st day of August, 1906.

The present invention relates to an improvement which I have made in the construction of the bottle stop er or cap disclosed and claimed in the a oresaid Letters Patent for the purpose of strengthening the tures thereof in claims.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 isa perspective view of my improved bottle stopper; Fig. 2 is a side elevation-of the same. Fig. 3'is a section of the upper part of a bottle with one of my Stoppers applied thereto. Fig: 4 is a sectional view of a cap, the section being taken through the line X-X of Fig. 3 and the view being taken in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank from which the cap is to be made.

10 designates a cap which is constructed of sheet metal such, .for example, as tin. The metal is first stamped out into a blank of a form substantially like that illustrated in Fig. 5. The bottle stopper comprises a disk portion 11 which has an annular dependin flange 12. These together form an inverte cup Within which is placed a packing disk 13 of cork or other suitable material. At three points around the eriphery of the disk 11 and at substantial y equal distances apart are formed fingers 20, one of these bein extended as shown lat 21 to form a hand e or These fingers are embossed or i ressed in the manner and for the purpose lly set forth in Patent No. 829,341 so that cach of them has a hollow lug 22, which is arranged to engage with the inclined'shoulder 31 around" the neck of the 'bottle 30 to which the stopper is to be a plied, and stifiening ribs 23 which extend om oints over the edge of the disk 11 downwar and below the holdingl lugs 22. Between the ribs the metal of the fian e 12 is bulged outward above the projectingIug 22 as is indicated at 24 so that the whole structure of the finger is far more rigid and strong than the remaining portions of the flange and disk.

,The fiat portion designated by 25 is provided for the purpose of facilitating the op eration of applying the cap to abottle by means of adie or other tool which maybe arranged with cam surfaces and thus avoiding the flattening out and destroying of the function of the stiffening ribs 23.

The structure thus far described is fully disclosed in the aforesaid Letters Patent. I have found, however, that by addin between the sides of the fingers 20 an the flange 12 a reinforcing lug 26, the stren th of the structure is materially increased an that it has other decided advantages.

The cap thus secured to the bot tle is held firmly in place by the strength of the fingers and it is ca able of withstanding considerable pressure rom the inside of the bottle. The addition of the lugs 26 greatly .increases the 'amount of pressure which the is able to withstand from the bottle. en it is desired to remove this cap from a bottle this may be readily done by grasping the lower end of the handle or tail-piece 2 1 and forcing the cap upward thereby. This o eration does not materially change the. s apeof the ca and its fingers, as when it is thus sprung o from the bottle the stiffness of its structure will cause it to immediately regain its original shape. If it is desired to Cit `reseal the bottle after this operation this may be readily done by simply lacin the cap over the mouth of the ott e an: pressing downward upon the disk 11 until the fingers 20 snap under the shoulder 3,1. The pressure of the lugs 22 upon the inclined shoulder will hold the cap u on the bottle with sufficient strength to e ectuallyseal the bottle. The lugs 26, which I have added for the purose of strengthening the structure, also aid in accomplishing this result.

`The cap or stopper which I have herein described ossesses all of the advantages disclosed in t e former Letters Patent. It has IIO the additional features ci possessing greater strength and stiffness and with it a bottle may bel sealed so that it is capable of efectually withstanding greater 1nternal pressure.

What l claim is 1. A bottle stopper comprising adisk lili-vf fingers havin holding ugson their inner surfaces, and stifiening ribs on their outer surfaces; and strengthening lugs between the sides of the fingers and the lower edge of the flange.

A bottle stop er comprising a metallic rap'containing pac ing material and having a number of depending fingers around its peesame .riphery', each' finger having an inwardly eX- tendin lng for engaging the neck of the bottle an also stilening ribs surrounding said lugs and extending upward to the cap; and strengthening lugs between the sides of the fingers and the lower edge of the flange.

5. A bottle stopper comprising a sheet metal cap conta1n1n0r packing material and having a depending 'from the lower end of said flange and provided with a reinforcement extending from the lower ends upward through the width or depth of the flange, one of said lingers having a handle or tail-piece rovided with a reinforcement extending t rough its length and continuing through the length of the finger to which it is attached and the width of the lange; and strengthening lugs between the glides of the fingers and the lower edge of the ange.
