Be it known that I, EDWARD J. ORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Noda way, in the county of Adams and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in l/Vindow-Sashes; and I do dec are the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ventilators for windows, and has for its object to provide a device of the kind which is very simple and can be applied to any window without change or alteration, and will permit of the desired ventilation being secured at the top of the window without the danger of the entrance of snow or rain, as is the case with the ordinary window.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved attachment; Fig. 2 is a transverse horizontal view of a window provided with the attachment, looking down; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates an ordinary window casing provided with the usual sash, 2, only one of which is shown, and it being the upper one. Secured in the upper part of the casing is a frame, 3, provided with a glass, 4, and adapted to extend down nearly to the lower sash The frame, 3, is preferably rigidly. secured in the casing, and may be made extensible, if desired. Secured to the lower portion of the frame, 3, preferably by' flanges, 5 and 6, is a perforated strip, 7, which extends from the lower edge of the frame, 4, substantially to the outside of the frame, 2. The strip, 7, is provided with perforations, 8, and is preferably formed from.
- metal, and the flanges, 5 and 6, formed integral therein. The strip, 7, is preferably made in two sections, with their ends overlapping and one of them shorter than the other and rovided with loops, or bails, 9, under whic the end of the other portion is adapted to be moved for the purpose of adjustmg the attachment to windows of different widths.
As above described, it is evident that when my improved ventilator is placed in the upper portion of a window casing outside of the upper sash, any desired amount of ventilation may be secured by drawing the upper sash downward without any danger of the snow or rain beating in from the top of the upper sash, as is the case with ordinary windows where no protector or ventilating attachment is used.
The attachment can be formed very cheaply from sheet metal having the horizontal portion provided with any desired shaped or sized openings and the flanges perforated for the insertion of the fasteners, when it is desired to secure the attachment in place. Bymaking the strip or horizontal portion out of woven wire, the perforations can be so small as to prevent the entrance of flne particles of dust, etc., that would otherwise pass up between the glass, 4, and the sash, 2, if means were not taken to prevent it. By making the protector, 4, out of glass, the entrance of the light is unobstructed, thereby securing the advantages of the ventilation without the disadvantages of obstructing the light.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a ventilating attachment for windows, a frame provided with a glass and adapted to be secured in a window casing, of an inwardly extending perforated strip, the ends of which are provided with L-shaped flanges, one arm of each flange being adapted to be secured to the frame and the other arm to the window casing.
2. In a ventilating attachment for win dows, a frame provided with a glass and adapted to be secured in a window casing, a two-part attachment secured to the lower end thereof, each part comprising a perforated strip with upwardly extending flanges at one end, the other ends of said strips being adapted to overlap each other and one of them provided with loops for securing the strips together, said flanges being adapted to be secured to said frame and easing respectively.
