Be it known that I, FREDERICK G. J AHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York,
county of Kings, and State of New York,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to lo feeding mechanism adapted to feed single pieces of paper'or other material or mail matter and the like in succession from a pile, stack or bunch thereof.
It has for its object to provide a simple I 5 and inexpensive mechanism adapted without adjustment to efiiciently operate on uniform and non-uniform matter or material with equal facility; and furthermore to improve the general construction of the mechanism, and to render certain of its parts subject to wear easy of substitution.
As a better understanding of the improvements will be had from a detailed descri tion of a practical embodiment thereof such description will now be given in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a plan view of the improved mechanism associated with a portion of a printing mechanism of well known type. Fig. 2, is a sectional side elevation of a portion of the feeding mechanism. Fig. 3, is a sectional end elevation thereof, Fig. 4, is a horizontal section on the line 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5, is a erspcctive view of the wiper, removed from its place. Figs. 6 and 7 are vertical sections on the lines 6 and 7 respectively of Fig. 2.
The improved feed mechanism A, is shown associated with a printing couple B, and accompanying parts as usually arranged in a well known type of post ollice mail matter marking nuu-hinc, and of the character illustrated in my United States Letters Patent, No. 657,939, dated September 18, 1900, simply by way of illustrating an embodiment of the invention to practical purposes.
The printing couple consists of the usual die or rinting roller and impression roller 16 wilii which is associated a pair of feed rollsis 123, 14 and a trip iingcr 205 for controlling the rotation of the printing roller in a manner similar to that set for h in my said Lettors Patent.
The feed mechanism A consists of a feed 55 roller 12 carrying a rubber feed surface 12 with which may be associated a supplemental and smaller feed roller 11, also having a rubber feeding surface 11*. Opposed to the feed roller 12 is the improved wiper-separator by which the feed of single pieces is insured. This consists of a flexible wiper and a bearer 30 arranged one in advance of the other to bear against the feeding surface of the feed roller in the manner indicated in Fig. 1.
The bearer and wiper are carried by a supporting guide or plate 3 secured through an intermediate block 6 to a post 5 which rises through a hole in the machine base C from one end of an arm 4, that is hung on a pivot 2 carried in said machine base; the construction adapting the bearer and wiper to move or yield bodily away from the feed roller against the tension of a suitable spring 18, to accommodate the feed of different thickness of: matter through the machine.
The supporting guide or plate 3 extends, in the main, parallel with and along one side of the pathof movement of the pieces passing from the feed mechanism to the printing couple, the opposite side of said path being guarded. by a fixed guide 28. At the entrance to the feed mechanism the guide or plate 3 is bent outwardly to provide a flared entrance for the material passing between the wiper and feed roller. This bent portion of the supporting plate forms an angularly arranged or inclined seat for the wiper 50 so that the tendency of the wiper is to occupy the position shown in Fig. 4, but which, owing to its flexibility, will, in bearing against the feed roller, have its free end bent inwardly toward the supporting plate as in Fig. 1.
The wiper 50 is preferably a rectangular piece of rubber of suitable thickness and backed with canvas or other material 55, to prevent it from stretching, with a central hole 10, adapting it to engage a iixed stud 1, projecting from the angular or inclined seat provided by the supporting plate 3, see Fig. 4. Between the angular seat of the guide or plate 3 and the back of the. rubber is interposed a distance piece 7 whose particular function is to form a space in rear of the forward free end of the wiper, Figs. 1 and 7, so that when the latter is in use its end may yield slightly with respect to the supporting guide or plate. In the preferred construction the wiper 50 has its hole 10 .centrally arranged therein so that, after its one end has become worn, it may be removed from its stud 1 and changed end for end and replaced with its worn end extending intothe pocket behind the end of the late 9.
