Be it known that I, V ILHELM J OHAN GER- HARD FREUND, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in BottleClosures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to closures or stoppers for bottles, jars and the like, and has for its principal object the provision of animproved sealing device which combines the advantages of positive and powerful closure, simplicity of construction and ease of manipulation.

Primarily, my invention contemplates a closure all the material parts of which are connected, one with another, to prevent the discarding or loss of one or more thereof and obviate the necessity for replacement when the bottle is refilled.

My invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which Figures 1, 3 and a are side elevations of the top portion of a bottle provided. with a closure embodying my invention, each of said figures showing the device as viewed in different vertical planes. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the cap in an open position.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, numeral 5 refers to the neck of a bottle shown broken away from. the body portion. A metal cap 6 is shaped to fit down simply over the mouth of the bottle, and I prefer to interpose a loose disk 7 of cork, rubber or other yielding and impervious material, which, when said cap is subjected to pressure, operates to hermetically seal the bottle opening. I prefer that this disk 7 should be separate from and free of all other parts of the device, in order that it may be discarded after use, for hygienic purposes, and replaced by a new or fresh one when the bottle is refilled. It will be apparent, however, that this member, the function of which is in fact little more than of an ordinary washer, may be attached, if desired, to the top of the cap 6.

I prefer that the cap 6 should be secured to the bail 8, which is formed of a single piece of wire, bent substantially into U-shape and again to conform to the top of the bottleneck and provide the loop 9 and the hinge portions 10 and 10, on oppositesides of said neck. The ends of said hinge portions are bent away from each other to provide the pivots or hinge- lugs 11 and 11. The neckband 12 also consists of a single strand of wire, bent to provide the two loo s 13 and 13 the oppositely located eyes or oops 14 and 14, and the lock twist 15.

The clamping lever l6 comprises a sin le wire bent into substantially U-shape, each of the legs of which is formed into substantially the shape of an S to provide the pair of hooks 17 and 17 The two ends of the wire forming the lever 16 are bent toward each other to provide the pivot lugs 18 and 18 which engage, respectively, the eyes 14 and 14 of the neck band 12. These two loops or eyes 14 and 14' are arranged on one side of the neck 5 in such a manner that their centers hein a plane which merely touches the circle of the neck, which permits extension of the pivot lugs 18 and 18 a suilicient distance through the eyes formed by said loops to insure a firm hold. This tangential arran ement of the pivot lugs also permits of the complete junction of their ends, where the lugs 18 and 18 are arranged radially relative to the neck circle, their projections throu h the eyes and hold thereupon would necessitrily be limited to substantially the depths of the openings through the eyes. The eyes or loops 14 and 1 1 being arranged 1n a like manner, the pivoted or hinge lugs 11 and 11 of the bail are not limited in their pro ection through the eyes and can extend sufiiciently far therethrough to insure a perfeetly secure hold, thus obviating the possiblhty of the pivot portions of the bail becommg dislodged or detached in the course of ordinary use.

Itis to be observed that the loops which form the eyes 14 and 14 are closed against accidental opening under strain upon the lugs or pivots 11 and 11 by the connecting leg 19, which is common to both loo s, and which crosses the vertical legs 20 anc 20 on the side opposite to that toward which the loops project. Under a tension great enough to change the form of the loops, the latter, instead of becoming loose from the lugs 11 and 1 1, would tighten thereupon like aslip-knot. This tightening principle covers the whole loop arrangement on the neck-band 12, and the latter, together with its loops, can therefore be constructed out of far lighter wire, or wlre having a strength suflicient for tensile enough to Withstand transverse or bending stralns.

The S bends, forming the hooks 17 and 1 17 on the lever 16, may be made to provide a varying leverage upon the bail-loop 9 by placing the hooks a less or greater distance away from their centers of rotationthe lugs 18 and 18. g

It Will be noted. that the seats 21 of t1? hooks 17 and 17 serve to carry the looped portion 9 of the bail past or beyond the vertical plane of the pivots 18 and 18 and thus firmly secure said bail in its locked position.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to. secure by Letters Patent:

1. A three-piece wire clamp for bottle stoppers comprising a neck-band provided with two oppositely-located pairs of eye-loops, a bail consisting of an elongated loop having its ends pivoted in one pair of said eye-loops and bent to'pass over the bottle mouth, and a loop having its ends pivoted in the other pair of eye-loops, the legs of said lever-loop being bent to form a pair of hooks adapted to engage and clamp said bail.

2. The combination, with a bottle and stopper, of a wire neck-band, said band being provided with two oppositely-located pairs of eye-loops, a bail comprising an open elongated wire loop having its ends outwardly "Went to provide pivot lugs entering one pair of eye-loops, and a bailclamping lever pive oted in the other pair of loops, said lever comprising an open loop having its longitudinally disposed legs bent to provide a pair of hooks adapted to engage the end of said bailloop.
