This invention relates to .that type of till where the amount of the purchase is indi-v cated by a disk having the amounts printedthereon and exhibited through a suitable window.

'operated in turn by a pawl such as a which extends across between the two adjacent ratchet wheels of the rollers, 0 0 and can be placed in engagement either with one or the other. This automatic reversing action is obtained by means of an arm '0 pivotally mounted upon a reciprocating plate 'w and having a locking pawl v. The pawl u is also pivoted upon this plate w the arm a slot or cut away part to allow same to swing past the pivot of the said pawl. This arm 1) is actuated by a roller o (shown dotted) which is engaged. by the ribbon when a spool is getting full. The pawl u is provided with aV-shaped extension uwhich is adapted to rest upon one side or the other of a correspondingly shaped part 1) of the rocking pawl 12. In normal operation the plate w is reciprocated vertically b means of the extension- 4 of the bell-crank ever and serves tocause the double pawl u to en age and actuate either of the spools (accor ing to which side of its pivot the arm 1) is placed) while, when the spool is nearly full the roller 0 is pressed away therefrom by the ribbon and the arm 12 spool, and, at the sametime the pawl '22 slips to the other side of the V-shaped extension u whereby the pawl a is turned engage and actuate the ratchet wheel of the said empty spool, thus reversing the travel of the ribbon. The construction of the spring roller p is such as will allow a certain amount of give or resiliency to facilitate a clear impression being taken upon the record strip and for this purpose the roller is mounted upon a squared spindle w carried by the bello having on its center and caused to crank arm. The boss of the roller consists of a sleeve y having disks y y disposed therein and the said disks are providrd 'with elongated slots .2 forthe reception of thr spindle as, a suitable spring 2 bring inserlrd brtwren the upper ends of the said slots and adapt-r d to bear upon the squared spindle. Thr rollc r formed upon the sleeve y may be. of indiarubber or other suitable material.
The operation. may be shortly stated to be as follows '.-T he handles of the disks are moved to indicate the amount of the purchase; the printing wheels are thus brought to a corresponding position. This movement by means of the notched disks releases the drawer which is pushed out by its spring, the change is given to the customer and the drawer returned to closed position. The bellcrank arm slips past the cam, advances the record strip through the awl s and, rings the bell. Theprinting rib on is also advanced as above descri'liied' The amount of the purchase remains visible until the machineis again Joperatedlor the next transaction. i
For the purpose of reventing any tampering of the amount indicated, I provide an indicator 3 which is operated or released by the first movement of either of the arms which engage the notched wheels and indicates that the machine is being used and directly the figures are altered from their osition the drawer is released and cannot )e returned without efiecting aprint from the printing characters.
This indicator 3 is preferably in the fOI'll'l of a'segmentalarm mounted on the same center as the. disks and provided with a nose or catch 4 adapted, when the drawer is in closed position to be supported upon a ledge or part 5 of a spring press d plate 6, said plate being pivoted upon the same center as the locking arms y This plate 6 is provided with extensions 7, 7 which rest against the sidel'aces of the arms j whereby, when either of the said arms are, moved outward by movement of the handles a cr b and the corresponding notched wheels, thenosc' 4 is released from engagement with theipart 5, and by reason of the spring '8, the outer end of the indicator 3 is moved opposite the window 9 on. each side of the machine. A step or projection 10 on the bell crank g returns the nose 4 to enga ement with the plate 6.
hen the apparatus is arranged to indicate pounds as well as shillings and pence, an extra printing wheel m is mounted upon the spindle g and is rovided with a handle 12 the normal position of which as will be seen in which the amount of the purchase is exhibited. When the apparatus is to be fitted with an adding mechanism to show the total of the amounts indicated I provide each printing wheel with a snail like cam, which cams are shown at 15, 16 and 17 and for convenience in grouping the cam 16 is coupled to the intermediate printingwheels through the medium of a sleeve like extension thereofas at 19; Each cam is provided with suitable steps 20, 21 and 22 the number of steps corresponding to the number of pence, shillings or pounds which the respective handle indicates on the dial. Under and working against the stepped cams are disposed a corresponding number of sliding bars 23, 24 and 25 each coupled by a rack'and pinion 28 through a ratchet 29 to a corresponding add ing' wheel of the adding mechanism 30. Each of the rods 23, 24, 25 is coupled by a spring 31'and a bell crank lever 32 to the 'vi brating lever q shown in Fig. 2 which lever 1 serves as reviously described,for traveling the recor ribbon.
The operation is as follows :The several indicating handles a b and 12.are moved to positionwhich shows upon the window the amount of the purchase. We will assume that the amount of the purchase is 1 :3 :65. In these positions the respective cams .will allow their respective rods 23, 24 and 25 when operated by the bell crank qto pass up adistance equal to the steps on the cams which happen to be above the rods for instance the 'pound cam will have moved one step beyond the rod and the rod will be capable of moving up one step.
, The shilling cam will have moved three steps beyond the rod and the shilling rod can ascend three steps. The pence cam will have moved 13 steps beyond the rod and the pence rod will ascend 13 steps. The pence wheel will be divided into steps representing a half-penny. When the parts are in this position the money drawer ispushed back into closed position, and operates the bell cranked lever as before de s and scribed, and through the levers 32, the rods 23,, 24, 25 are raised until stopped by the respective cams as above mentioned and by the position of the steps on the cams the movement of the rods is determined. As soon as the bell crank moves back under its spring, it de resses t e rods 23, 24, 25 to their origina position and each rod will, through the rack and pinion 28 and ratchet awl mechanism 29 rotate the adding whee s a distance equal to the distance which they have ascended during their upward movement. The rods 23, 24, 25 are retained in their retired positions until the machine is again operated to indicate and record another transaction.
In order to provide for the difference of movement of each of the rods 23, 24, 25 they are connected to the levers 32 by a spring 31 of considerable flexibility and the downward movement is imparted by en gagement of the lever 32 with pins 33 on the said rods. 1 I
In order that the pence wheel may add a shilling to the shilling wheel at the next operation of the shilling rod a trigger 34 is provided having a finger 35 engaged by a pin 36 on the pence wheel, said trigger is moved away from engagement with a stop 37 on the rod 24 so asto allow the said rod at the next 0 eration to descend a distance equal to anot er step on the shilling cam and thereby record another shilling on the adding wheel. If this action takes placewhile the movement to remove the stop 33 and allow I the, trigger 34 to return to normal position at the next upward movement of the rod 24.
In order that the money drawer may not be closed and so make a faulty record by reason of the notched wheels e and e and the rollers h 72/ being in an intermediate position an arm is mounted on the pivoted catch 7c, and the bell crank lever (1 is provided with a stop in g which comes into engagement with t e end of said arms when the said position. This engagement prevents the drawer from being pushed in and so no record is made as the bell crank lever g is unable to move.
It may in some cases be desirable to combine with the cash registering apparatus described -a coin displaying device and one such device is shown in Figs. 9 and 10 where arts are unlocked in the intermediate the coins are inserted at the top of a chute 40 made with transparent sides so as to show the coins. The coins are received upon the uppermost of two series of flaps 41 and 42 the said series being each connected by bars 43 and 44 which are alternately reciprocated by a pivoted lever 45 actuated by means of an inclined or earn like device 46 in which runs a roller 47 mounted on the end of said lever. The cam like device 46 is mounted on the side of the drawer 1 whereby as the drawer is pulled in and "out each series of fla s is alternately de ressed and the coins fal from one flap to t e next below at each I movement of the drawer and so each coin is exhibited for a certain, time before being delivered into the coin drawer above which the said coin displaying device is mounted as will be seen by Figs. 9 and 10.
