Be it known that I, OLOF A. NORLUND, a resident of lilliamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ice-Creepers; and I do hereby de- Clare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improved ice creeper, the object of the invention being to provide an improved construction of creeper with improved means for securing the same to heel of a boot or shoe, and such securing or locking means being so located as to prevent possibility of its being opened by accidental contact with an object, and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations -and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom plan view showing the Creeper in its locked. position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the creeper unlocked, and Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal section.

1 represents a sheet metal plate, of the general shape of a boot or shoe heel, and having integral prongs 2 at its forward edge, adapted to be forced into the forward edge of the heel, by my improved mechanism which will now be described. A lever 3, is pivotally secured at one end, by a rivet 4, to the plate 1, at a point between its center and forward edge, and the forward end of the lever is bent at right angles, forming a finger hold 5 at the forward edge of the plate and heel, to facilitate the manipulation of the lever and limit the movement thereof.

G represents a slotted bar, having a clamping prong 7 at one end, to engage the rear edge of the heel. A headed rivet 8, in plate 1, is located in the slot 9 of bar 6, and the latter has secured therein, a pin 10, one end of which is located in a slot 11 in plate 1, and the other end projects below bar 6, and is adapted to enter any of the series of holes 12 in a flat spring link 13, pivotally secured at its forward end, to a lug or enlarged portion 141, at one side of, and between the ends of lever 3.

It will be seen, that by moving spring link 13 from pin 10, the bar 6 can be moved to lol cate the pin 10 in another of the holes 12, and

thereby adjust the clamp to iit another size heel.

The plate 1 is shown provided with four calks .or points 15, although any desired number may be employed, and it will be seen that by projecting the free end of `lever 3 to the forward end of the heel, any number of calks can be located around the sides and rear edge of the heel and not interfere in the slightest with the movement of the lever.

To secure the Creeper to a heel, the lever 3 is thrown to its eXtreme open position, shown in Fig. 2, and plate 1 placed against the heel,

with the prongs of the plate and sliding bar 6,`

against the front and rear edges thereof. The forward end of lever 3 is then moved toward the side of the heel, which movement draws inward bar 6 and clamps the heel between the fixed and -movable prongs, and when the lever is moved far enough with its finger hold 5 against the forward edge of the heel, its pivotal connection with the link 13 will be slightly past the line of pivots and the several parts will be securely locked.

By arranging the lever 3, to project its free end against the forward or front edge of the heel, rather than against the sides or rear of the heel, all liability of accidental movement of the lever, by striking any object, is obviated, as the end of the lever is protected from striking, but should it engage an object such contact would merely force the lever end against the heel and not unlock the same.

Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence, I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is In an ice creeper, the combination of a plate having a fixed prong at its forward edge, a movable bar mounted on the plate and having a prong at its rear end to engage the rear end of the heel, a lever pivoted to the plate, a link connecting said lever with the movable plate, said lever projecting from its connection with the plate forwardly beyond the front edge of said plate, and an upward projection on the free end of said lever permanently located forwardly of the forward edge of the plate, said upward projection adapted to lie against the front wall of a heel when the device is secured to the latter the direction of locking movement being from front to rear of the heel, whereby engagement of any obstruction with said upward projection tends to insure the retention xo of the device in locked position.
