Description

PATENTED JUNE 4, 1907.
. P. J. HARRIGAN.
JOURNAL BOX.
APPLIOATION FILED DBO.15, 190s WITNESSES s'ra rns PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK J. HARRIGAN, OF MGKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
uounmAp-isoxi i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. HARRIGAN, a cltlzen of the United States of America, re-
siding at McKeesport, in the county of Alle-- gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in J ournal-Boxes, of which the fo lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to journal boxes, and has for its object to provide a device of this character so constructed as to direct the lubricant toward the inner end of the box, and also toward the axle revolubly mounted therein.
Another object of this invention is to provide a journal box in which the volume of oil and waste at the back of the journal is increased to provide a more edective lubrication at that part of the axle journaled therein, which receives the greatest amount of wear.
To this end, I have devised a simple and inexpensive journal box that will prevent any settling of the waste packing away from the journal, the box packed with waste, work of the car inspector and oiler.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a art of this specification, and then s ecificalIy pointed .out in the appended c aim. I
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a horizontal being easily and quickly section of the ournal box on the line a=:e
of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 isa central vertical section of the journal box.
In the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral 1 designates a box having an inclined bottom 2 and having the inner ends 3 of its side walls outwardly inclined to provide ample space for waste and lubricant, said space having an inclined bottom and sides as shown for the pur ose above indicated of directing the lubricant and waste toward the inner end of the box. The rear end of the bottom 2 of the box is inclinedup- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 15,1906. Serial No- 348,055.
cant at any desired time,
thereby facilitating the having its side walls flaring outwardly point intermediate the ends to the rear end,
upwardly and rearwardly, as

wardly as at 4, whereby when the waste and lubricant has a tendency to settle toward the rear end of the journal box, it will be forced upwardly to engage the axle orspindle 5 journaled within the box. The box as illustrated is provided with the usual opening 5, whereby the interior of the box can be inspected, and refilled with waste and lubrialso with the usual form of dust guard opening brasses 7.
My invention entirelyresides in the inclination of the bottom, sides and end of the box, and for this reason I do not care to confine myself to the type of dust guard used in connection with the journal box or to other features thereof.
' A further important advantage of my improved construction of box is, ural.tendency of the waste is to move the rear, and any tendency of the packed waste to move forward results in wedgin it against the under surface of the journai into the position where it best serves the purpose of lubrication. Again, in case of derailment, the downward movement of the journal within the box serves to force the acked waste upward along the inclined sides of the box as well as rearward. Thus any jarring movement of the journalby my improvement results in forcing the waste to the rear and upward along the sides as above stated.
' What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A journal box having a bottom inchned from the front end to the rear end walfrl, and om a and having a part of the'rear wall inclined ose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
