Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS B. PRAHAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a friction lock or latch for purse frames, being particularly adapted to the frames of what is known as hand or wrist bags, which lock or latch is more simple, durable and economic to manufacture than any of its class now in use.

A further purpose of the invention is to render it possible to form the latch or look of but two members, and to make each member of but one piece of material and yet provide for a perfectly safe interlocking engagement of the members, and finger pieces whereby to conveniently bring the members into locking engagement or to separate them.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, aswill be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a closed bag and the applied look, a portion of the frame being broken away; Fig. 2 is aplan view of the lock in closed position and portions of the members of the frame to which the lock is applied; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lock open and portions of the members of the frame to which the lock is secured, and said view also illustrates a slight difference in the formation of the members of the look.

Any form of frame or any type of -handle or body maybe employed in connection with the improved lock or latch, which consists of two members D and D. Said two members D and D are each constructed of a single piece preferably of sheet material.

Each member D and D comprises a body portion 10, which may be of any desired length, and said body portions act as finger pieces when the latch or lock is applied to the frame of the bag, enabling the said frame to be conveniently locked and at the opposing or inner ends of the body sections 10 of said members D and D locking sections are provided, designated respectively as 11 and 12. These locking sections are formed by bending or curving the material at the said inner or opposing portions of the body sections 10 outwardly in opposite directions as is shown in Fig. 2, and said curvatures or bends are made so that when the members D and D are secured to the mem bers-A and A of the frame the said curved or bent sections 11 and 12 will be but a slight distance above the upper edges of the frame. Furthermore, the members D and D of the lock are so placed on the members A and A of the bag frame that when the bag is opened and the frame members are brought somewhat close together the said locking sections 1 1 and 12 will be in practically slight engagement; but when the frame members A and A are brought close together so as to close the body B of the bag, one locking section will spring past the other and thus provide for a perfect interlocking engagement between said loc-k sections 11 and 12, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

I desire it to be understood that the bodV sections and likewise the lock sections may be decorated in any suitable or approved manner, and that the body sections 10 of the said lock or latch may be given any desired or preferred contour, as for example they may be made arched or made straight or they may extend any required distance from the central portions of the members of the bag frame to which they are applied, in direction of the outer ends of said members,

but the locking sections 11 and 12 are in.- variably bent or curved laterally in 0pposite directions, their conveXed surfaces being brought together when a locking engagement is effected between the sections.

Any approved means may be used for securing the members D and D ofthe lock or latch to the members A and A of the bag frame, the member -D of the latch being secured for example to the frame member A and the member D of the latch to the frame member A as is illustrated. Usually the attachment of the members of the lock or latch to the bag frame is effected through the medium of split lugs 13, integral with and extending down from the under edge of the body portions 10 of said members, and these lugs are passed through openings 14 in the unlocked; and frame members A and A, and then the mem bers of the lugs are bent in opposite directions to an engagement with the under faces of the frame members A'and A, as is clearly shown to the right in Fig. 1.

The locking sections 11 and 12 of the lock or latch members D and D may constitute the inner terminals of such members, or as is illustrated in Fig. 3 the bends or curves forming the locking sections may be removed somewhat from the inner terminals of said members, and the terminal portions at such time are carried upward to form finger pieces 15 of any desired shape which may be manipulated in opening or closing the bag, and at such time the finger pieces act in conjunction with the body portions 10, enabling a person to quickly engage the members in a manner to bring them together or to separate them.

It is evident that as the members of the lock or latch are made from one piece of material, the cost of production is greatly reduced and at the same time as convenient if not a more convenient commodity of its kind is obtained than similar commodities now on the market.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. 'A look for the frame of a bag or the like, comprising two flat members secured on edge to the frame and having their inner ends bent in opposite directions, to form curved locking portions.

2. 'A lock for the frame of a bag or the like, comprising two flat members having their inner ends bent in opposite directions to form curved locking portions and provided with lugs on their lower edges for securing them to the frame. 1

3. A lock for the frame of a bag or the like, comprising two members secured to the frame and having their inner ends bent laterally in opposite directions to form curved locking portions, said locking portions terminatingin upwardly projecting and spaced finger pieces.

4. A lock for the frame of a bag or the like, comprising two flat members secured on edge to the frame and having their inner ends bent in opposite directions to form curved locking portions and provided with enlarged and upwardly projecting terminals forming spaced finger pieces.
