Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.
Application filed April 25,1906. Serial No. 313,6 43- clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which' it appertains tomake and lise the same. v
My invention relates t0 new and Auseful i improvements in pump pistons and more particularly to that class adapted to be used in connection with force pumps.
My pbject is to provide a construction adapted to be used for pumping water or air.
A further object is to provide a piston that can be reversed and thereby force air or water in eithery direction.
Other' objects and advantages will' be hereinafter referred to in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, which are made a part of this aplplication-Figure 1 is a perspective view s Owing the casing surrounding the piston, partly broken away, and, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the casing and piston.
In the drawings similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout,
in which Y 1 designates my improved piston to"which is attached a suitable operating rod 2, said rod having a reduced portion 3, which is adapted to take into 'a suitable threaded opening 4 in the piston 1. The reduced portion 3 is of suflicient length to pass entirely through the (piston 1 so that the piston will fit upon sai side. A channel 5 is cut into one side of the piston 1 in which is adapted to be seated a check valve 6, said check being held in position in the channel 5 by means of a washer 7 vsaid washer being interiorly threaded to A take on to the threadedend 8 of the piston 1. A series of openings 9', are disposed through the piston 1 and intersect the channel 5 and are so located that when the piston 1- is being moved in one directionithe check valve 6 will cover all of-said openings and stop passage of air or water therethrough.
A packing rin 10 is entered into a channel 11 in the erip ery of the piston 1, said packing ring Y aving its meeting ends split and reduced portion from either` adapted to overlap as indicated at 12 in Fig. 1.
l' hat end of the piston op osite the channel 5 is provided with a leat 1er ring 13, said ring being so disposed that the free ends thereof will .engage the side walls of the piston chamber 14 and retard the passage of water around the periphery of the piston 1. The ring 13 is secured to the piston 1 in any preferred manner as by directing screws 13'u through the ring and into threaded sockets in the piston. The chamber 14 as shown in the drawings is adapted to be used when the piston 1 is compressing air, one end of said chamber being rovided with a series of open-v ings 15 througi which the airv is adapted to pass into the interior of said chamber 14.- and to the oplposite end of said chamber is secured a c eck valve 16 of the usual or any preferred form. Y
In operation when the piston 1 is drawn to the .end f the'chamber having the openings' 15 the check valve 6 is moved away from the openings 9 and air' forced through said openings into` the end of the vchamber adjacent the valve 16 and on the return stroke of the piston 1 the check valve 6 is clamped tightly by pressure over the openings 9 and so held until said piston has completed its stroke in the opposite direction, thereby forcing 'the vair through the check valve 16 into a suitable end 3 of the rod 2 when the reverse operation will take scribed.
place from that previously de- When the device is adapted to be used for pumping water the series of openings 15 in the chamber 14 are dispensed with or closed in some suitable manner and the chamber provided with a suitable connection' 17 hav- -mg a check valve 18 thereon, said connection .being disposed in cooperation with a supply of water, the voperation of the piston 1 bemg the same as that disclosed when the device is used for pumping air. The quantity of IIO air or water passing through the openings 9 may be readily regulated by turning the Washer 7 upon the threaded end 8 of the piston 1 so that the check valve 6 can be placed in closer relation to or farther away from that end of the openings 9 communicating with the channel 5, thereby allowing a greater or less amount of airv or water to pass therethrough.` When the piston 1 is used for pumping air it is necessary to use a lubricant to ause the same to slide freelyinkthe chamber 14 and to this end I have provided a suitable inlet 19 through Whiclroil can be intro-- duced into the chamber 14.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described the.
combination with a suitable chamber; of a pistonslidably mounted in said chamber, a rod secured to said piston, said piston having a channel at one end, a checkfvalve disposed in said channel, said piston also havin a plurality of longitudinal openings theret irough adapted to be closed by said check valve, a Washer secured to the threaded portion of said piston adapted to retain said check valve in position and adjust the same relative to -s'aid openings.
2. A device of the class described comprising a cylinder, a piston slidably mounted in said cylinder, avrod having a reduced end upon which said piston is adapted to take, a packing ring disposed in a channel around said piston, a packing leather secured to and surrounding one end of said piston, said piston having a channel in one end thereof and a plurality of openings through said piston, a check valve disposed in lsaid channel and adapted to close said openings onone stroke of the piston and a Washeradapted toadjustably secure said check valve in said channel.
3. In a device of the class described a piston having a channel at one end thereof, and
a plurality of longitudinal openings through said piston and registering with the channel,
a check valve movably dis osed in said chan-l neland a Washer adapte to adjustably secure said check valve in said channel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES W. MALLONEE.
