To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGER. "TUTTLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Restraining inexpensive, of a permanent character, and
of such an arrangement as to withstand the severe action of the water and be proof against the working of animals which weaken the wall by the cutting of openings therethrough.
To comprehend the invention reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, the dirt embankment and the concrete wall being broken away Fig. 2 is a vertical section view on line 0ca: Fig. 1 of the drawings; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of one of the clamps.
In the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a series of vertically disposed supports or uprights for what shall be termed the "base structure of the levee or restraining wall, which supports or uprights are driven into the bank of the river at suitable distances apart. These supports or uprights may consist of iron, treated posts, or piles, the same being connected by the longitudinally disposed tie cables 2. On these cables are in the present case adjustably arranged a series of clamp collars 3, from which clamp collars project the bond pieces or extensions 4. The purpose of forming the clamp collars 3 separately from the longitudinally disposed cables 2, is that the same may be adjusted toward and from each other as the work of constructing the restraining wall may require. However, the said clamp' collars 3 may be dispensed with if so desired, and the bond pieces or extensions 4 be formed integral with the longitudinally disposed tie cables 2, or
such bond pieces or extensions 4 may comprise frayed strands of the said tie cables, such being a mere detail of construction.
In carrying out the construction of the levee or restraining wall a given section of the base structure composed of the'uprights or supports 1 and the longitudinally disposed tie cables 2 is first formed, and such section of the base structure is then embedded within an outer wall 5 of concrete, the concrete being held in place until thoroughly set by means of the temporary forms 6. After the outer wall of concrete has set, the forms 6 are removed, and the dirt embankment 7 formed, usually by the debris or spoils thrown onto the land by a dredger utilized in the work of reclaiming. A levee or restraining wall is thus formed having sufficient strength to oppose the outward pressure of the confined material, while resisting the destructive action of the animal lifewhich burrows into and weakens the wall to such an extent as to create leaks in the wall, at the same time having such solidity as to prevent theaction of the water cutting away the face thereof.
The projecting bond pieces or extensions 4 of the tie cables 2 when the base structure is embedded Within the outer wall of concrete, gives a perfect bond of union between the tie cables and the concrete, thus materially strengthening the restraining wall and holding the concrete. At such portion of the wall as is required to resist the greatest pressure, or where the wall is subjected to the severe action of the confined stream, the clamp collars 3 are so adjusted 'on the tie cables as to be comparatively close together, so that the bond pieces or extensions l will almost contact, in order that the Wall after the concrete has set will be materially strengthened at such portion thereof.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is- 1. A restraining wall or levee, the same comprising a base structure composed of vertically disposed supports, and a series of longitudinally disposed tie cables, and an outer wall of concrete within which the said base structure is embedded.
2. A restraining wall or levee comprising a basestructure composed of vertically disposed supports, a series of longitudinally disposed tie cables, and bond pieces or extensions on the tie cables, and a Wall of concrete Within Which is embedded the said base structure.
3. A restraining Wall or levee, the same comprising a base structure composed of vertically disposed supports, a series of longitudinally disposed tie cables, and bond pieces or extensions adjustably held to the tie cables, and an outer Wall of concrete Within which the said base structure is embedded.
4. A restraining Wall or levee, the same comprising a base structure composed of vertically disposed supports, a series oflongitu dinally disposed tie cables, a covering of concrete for the base structure, and an outer em-v bankment Within which the said base structure andits covering of concreteis embedded.
