' poultry. One of the 4principal objections to this method of supplying food to fowls is that as heretofore constructed, much grain or other food has been wasted or soiled. My purpose is to remove these objections.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my feed hopper. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the hopper. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the removable guard frame. Fig. 4 is a detail showing one of the spindles of this frame, and Fig. 5 is a detail showing the base of said frame.
In the drawings 1 is the food receptacle which is covered by a hinged lid 2 and provided with a vertical back 3 and sides 4. These sides also inclose the ends of the feed trough hereinafter described, form the supports for my device and carry the hopper bottom composed of a horizontal board 5,v a diagonal piece 6 and perpendicular flange 7. Attached to the front 9 and sides 4 is a slanting partition 8, which divides the feed receptacle 1 from the trough formed outside the partition 8 by the parts 5, 6 and 7 heretofore described. An open space is left between the lower end of this partition 8 and the bottom board 5, thus furnishing the passageway 10 through which the grain is forced by gravity into the feed trough in the usual manner. The removable guard frame consists of spindles 12 carried by the base 13 and the top 14. The base is cut away, forming a shoulder 15 to adapt it to fit snugly about the vertical sideboards 4 of the hopper and rest upon the iange 7, while the lower extremities of the spindles pass through perforations 2O in the base and are cut away to form stops 16, which, when the guard frame is in place, impinge against the inner side of the flange 7 and co-operate with the shoulder 15 to hold the frame upon the flange. The inner edge of the top 14 is cut diagonally at 17 to form al bearing against the partition 8, and its front edge is made ush with the front board 9 of the hopper, the latter being provided with the button 18 which when turned holds the guard frame snugly in a vertical position in the hopper. When in'place the base 13 of the'guard frame forms a lip 19 projecting inwardly over the feed trough, the purposes of thisv lip being to prevent the spilling of the grain from the trough and in connection with the side board 4 and spindles (which prevent unnecessary side movement of the heads of the fowls when feeding) to check the throwing of the grain from the trough.
By opening the hinged lid 2, grain or other food may be placed in the receptacle 1 from which it falls by its own weight through the passageway 10 into the trough where it is accessible to the poultry, but, because of the arrangement of the guard frame, it cannot be easily soiled or wasted as is common with ordinary hoppers. It will be obvious also to those familiar with the art, that the arrangement ofv this feed trough within the outer walls of the hopper protects the grain from being either wet byrain (if out of doors) or soiled or thrown out by the fowls, while the removability of the guard frame permits a thorough cleansing of the hopper.
Having described my invention what vI claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A feed hopper, provided with a guard frame adapted to fit into the front of the hopper and means for removably attaching said frame to the hopper, consisting of a base provided with outer and inner stops, and a top bar having an inner bearing surface, and means for locking said frame in place.
2. A hopper comprising a grain reservoir l and a feeding trough connected with the reservoir, in combination with a removable guard frame formed of spindles, and means for detachably connecting the frame with the hopper, substantially as described.
3. A feed hopper divided into a storage compartment and feeding trough, a removable guard frame comprising vertical spindles, and upper and lower cross bars, the lower cross bar being provi ded with an inner lip and stops and adapted to rest upon the trough.
4. Afeed hopper, comprising a grain receptacle, feeding trough and slanting partition, said partition being fixed between the receptacle and trough andformed to leave a passageway below its lower extremity, in combi- IOO IOS
