n1: NORRIS PETERS ca, PHOYD-LITHO.. wAsHING'roN, v. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VALTER B. SMITH, OF MOUNT VERNON, KENTUCKY.
POULTRY-*FEEDING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 640,730, dated January 2, 1900. Application filed November 10, 1898. Serial No. 696,018. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of Rock Castle and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poultry-Feeding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in poultry-feeding devices; and the object of my invention is the provision of a coop for feeding chickens in which is located an automatic means for feeding or supplying the food as needed.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a poultry-feeder which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness in construction, and which is very efficient and practical in use.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a poultry-feeder embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved poultry-feeder complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional'view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the feed-hopper, and Fig. at is a detail view of the top or cover for the hopper or coop In the drawings, A designates the base of my feeder or coop proper, upon which near the ends thereof are secured the triangular ends B, either or both of which are or may be provided with the openings 0, which are provided with the doors D, the openings being for the admission of the chickens to the coop. Rising from the sides of the base and connected to the inclined top edges of the ends are the slanting sides or tops E, which are just long enough to leave a space to receive the tapered bottomless feed-hopper F, which consists of the tapered end pieces G, to which are secured the slanting side pieces H, having secured at their top edges the oppositely-inclined wings or flaps J, which contact and cover part of the outside of the slanting sides Eto hold open the mouth or bottom K of the feed-hopper directly in but a little above the bottom of the feed-trough L, which is in the center of the base in the coop and extends the entire length thereof. To
cover the top of this feed-hopper and also to cover the opening in the top of the coop should the hopper be at any time dispensed with, I employ the cover M, consisting of the slanting sides or wings N and the ends 0, whose lower ends are adapted to fit in the space along the inside of the ends of the hop per or coop to insure a good shelter and feeding-space for the poultry.
The feed-hopper may be made so that it can be removed from the coop or may be secured therein and made rigid to the slanting sides and ends without departing from the spirit of my invention.
From this description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my de vice is readily understood; but, briefly stated, it is as follows: The top of the feeder is removed and the grain or food is placed in the tapered hopper, which allows the contents to flow into the trough beneath. The cover or top is then replaced, and the poultry may pass through the openings provided for them.
and eat from the trough.
It will thus be seen that I provide a poultry-feeder which is especially desirable for feeding small chicks, as the openings in the coop may be made just large enough to admit the small chicks.
It is clearly shown that I produce a very simple, durable, compact, and cheap poultryfeeder which is very efiicient and practical in use and operation, as it insures a steady feed to the trough and very little waste.
I claim- A poultry-feeder, consisting of the base, triangular ends and slanting sides or tops rising therefrom and secured to the base to form a coop, said sides having a space between their upper edges,- a trough mounted upon said base the full length thereof and directly beneath said space, a tapering bottomless feedhopper removably placed in said space so that its lower edges enter the feed-trough, and a removable cover for said feed-hopper or for said coop when the feed-hopper is removed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER B. SMITH.
