To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILKENS A. SOHENOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pencil sharpener and pointer, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, convenient and inexpensive device of this character embodying a cutting blade and a pointing element adapted to be separated when the blade is to be used and to be combined when the pointing element is used, the latter being adapted to serve as a shield to cover the cutting edge of the blade.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a top plan view of a pencil sharpener and pointer embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing the tongue of the pointing element released for the application or removal of said element. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the device on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a sharpening blade provided at one end with a cutting edge 2 and at its opposite end With a handle 3, the latter being preferably provided with an opening 4 to permit it to be suspended from a suitable support. The blade 1 is adapted to serve the function of a chisel cutter, whereby thewood may be removed from the point of the pencil to expose the lead or graphite.
The pointing element comprises a spring plate 5 substantially coextensive in width and length with the body of the blade 1, said plate being formed at its outer end with a hook 6 to engage and shield the cutting edge 2. The plate is provided with an abrading surface or covering 7, shown in the present instance as consisting of a strip of sand paper or emory cloth covering the outer face of said plate and having its edges extending over upon and suitably secured to the under side thereof. The inner end of the plate 5 is provided with a tongue 8 adapted to engage a keeper 9 arranged upon the inner end of the body of the blade 1. The said keeper 9 is slidably mounted upon the blade, so that it may be moved into and out of engagement with said tongue to fasten or release the pointing element.
In the operation of sharpening a pencil, the pointing element is detached by sliding the keeper 9 out of engagement with the tongue and slipping the hook 6 out of enga 'ement With the cutting edge 2 of the b ade 1. The latter may then be used to cut away the wood at the point end of the pencil, leaving the latter in condition for pointing. The exposed portion of the lead orgraphite may then be moved over the surface of the abrading material 7, while the latter is disconnected or after it is again applied to the blade. The pencil may be pointed from time to time by running the exposed portion of the graphite over the surface of the pointing element, while the latter is applied to the cutting blade.
It will be seen that the construction described adapts the two parts of the device to be secured together in an effective and compact manner, and that the pointing element, when in position, forms a shield or guard for the cutting edge 2. It is obvious also that the device may be used for sharpening tools of various kinds.
Having thus described I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising a blade provided with a cutting edge at one end, an abrading element having an enga ing member at one end to engage and shie d the blade, and means for connecting the free end of the abrading element with the other end of the blade.
2. A device of the character described comprising a blade provided With a cutting edge at one end, an abrading element having a hook at one end to engage and shield said blade, and fastening means for connecting the free end of the abrading element with the other end of the blade.
3. A device of the character described comprising a blade having a cutting edge at one end, an abrading element provided at one end with a hook to engage and shield the edge of the blade and having a tongue at its opposite end, and a sliding keeper on the blade operative to engage the tongue to secure said abradin element to the blade.
4.
