OIL BURNER.

UNITED sTATEs PATENT onirica.
HENRY E. ARMITAGE, OF PRESOOTT, ARIZONA TERRITORY, ASSIGN OR TO ANNIE M. ARMITAGE.
OIL-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907.
Application lled March l0, 1906. Serial No. 305,357.
lo @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY E. ARMITAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in the county of Yavapai and Territory of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in oil burners and the primary object is to attain simplicity of construction and at the same time accomplish better results than heretofore in the way of spreading the jet issuing from the burner and the distribution and commingling of the oil with the escaping steam, the orifice of the oil pipe and the steam jet being independent of one another, so that no high gravity or other pressure is required to make the oil flow out of the burner.
Tith these objects in view my invention consists in the main, of a steam jacket, an oil pipe extending through the jacket with a semi-spherical tip or nozzle upon the surface of which the oil Hows from the oil pipe, the tip or nozzle being provided with a slit or saw kerf horizontally across it beneath the outlet of the oil pipe whereby the steam jet issuing therefrom is in the form of a thin fan shaped film with the oil distributed upon its upper surface.
My invention further consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l. is a vertical, longitudinal section through the burner, Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 is an end view.
A, represents the steam jacket which may be made of ordinary iron piping of suitable length.. This jacket has a cap D screwed on its rear end and the cap has a gland F at or near its center. Through this gland F the oil pipe B extends preferably throughout the length of the jacket and upon a slight incline, its outer end terminating in the semi-spherical tip or nozzle O of the burner, upon the rounded .surface of which the oil flowing through the pipe B issues. Horizontally across the tip or nozzle a narrow kerf or slit E is sawed, at a point below the discharge end of the oil pipe, for the escape of the steam in the steam jacket. This tip or nozzle being semi-spherical causes the steam to discharge in a flat, fan-shaped ilm, and the oil trickling over the spherical surface of the tip or nozzle spreads around it more or less and consequently distributes itself evenly over the surface of the steam jet. i
Steam is supplied through a pipe J from the boiler (not shown), and this pipe is provided with a steam regulating valve K for controlling the amount of steam admitted into the jacket. At the rear end of oil pipe B a T designated by the letter G is screwed and into this the oil pipe I from the oil tank (not shown), discharges; an oil regulating valve L being provided for determining the quantity of oil fed into the pipe B. A removable plug H screws into the outer end of the T opposite the rear end of pipe B as a means of cleaning the oil pipe, for by removing this plug any residuum, etc. accumulating in and clogging the oil pipe can be removed by first closing the valve L and after removing the plug, running a rod through the oil pipe.
From the foregoing, it 'will be seen that my invention is very simple and comprises parts and fittings usually in stock which may be easily assembled or taken apart if occasion should require it, it is so constructed that it is not likely to get out of order, and the discharge of the super-heated oil and the steam is such that the jet is fan-shaped instead of straight with the oil evenly distributed thereon.
Slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth but,
IIaving fully described my invention, what lI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a steam jacket having a semi-spherical tip or nozzle at one end, said nozzle having a narrow kerf or slit extending horizontally across it in the region of its center, a straight oil pipe extending entirely through the jacket and nozzle at a point above the slit whereby to discharge over the semi-spherical surface of the nozzle and means for opening the pipe at its rear end whereby a device maybe thrust therethrough throughout the length. of the pipe for cleaning purposes.
i 2. The combination with a steam jacket,

IOS
and semi-spherical tip or nozzle removably screwed to one end, and a cap removably screwed to the other end, the nozzle having a horizontal slit or kerf, of a straight oil pipe of uniform internal diameter throughout its length which extends through and opens' flush with the upper surface of the semispherical tip or nozzle at a point above the kerf or slit7 the rear end of the pipe extending through the cap and means whereby ac- 1o cess may be gained through the entire length of the pipe.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
