2 Claims.
This invention relates generally to a liquid flow regulating valve and more particularly to means where by the amount of water flowing therethrough may be readily determined.
3 In the use of regulating valves of the type noted, it is imperative that the water supplied to the furnace humidifier shall be substantially what the heat coming from the furnace will vaporize so that there shall be no very large excess at least of water to overflow and pass to the ash pit of the furnace; though a certain measure of over flow to the ash pit to dampen the ashes taking place during the night time when the furnace is not heated to as high a degree as dur- 5 ing the day time is not only not objectionable but is in fact beneficial for reducing dust when the ashes are removed. But even with the permissible overflow to the ash pit, it is very desirable and necessary that there shall be a continuous limited flow of water to the humidifier, regulated against overflow to any detrimental extent and yet suficient that the humidifying apparatus shall at all times be supplied with water for vaporizing. I have previously obtained United States Letters Patent No. 1,572,469 on a construction of regulating valve for the purpose stated and the present invention is directed to improvements in construction for permitting visual inspection of the flow from which the amount of passage of water to the humidifying apparatus may be gauged and the regulating valve properly set after very little experiment so as to supply water to the humidifier in regulated amount as needed and without detrimental excess.
An understanding of the invention and the construction embodying the same whereby beneficial results in inspecting and regulating the flow of water to a furnace humidifier are secured, may be had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,

Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof with a water inlet pipe and a pipe for conducting the liquid away shown attached.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the figures of the drawing.
In the construction of the regulating valve, a housing 1 is provided open at one end and interiorly threaded while at the opposite end it is reduced in size making the stem 2 exteriorly threaded at its outer end and having an axial interiorly threaded opening therethrough. At the underside of the housing 1 it is provided with an integral downwardly extending boss 3 having an interiorly threaded opening therethrough.
A valve stem 4 is formed with a threaded section to engage with the interiorly threaded open- 50 ing through the part 2. The stem 4 passes through suitable packing and a nut 5 to compress the packing around it, which nut is attached to the outer end of the part 2; and at its end beyond said packing the stem 4 is provided with an operating hand wheel 6. At the inner end of the stem 4 is a somewhat enlarged cylindrical cup '7 integral with the stem 4, said cup at its free end being formed with an outwardly extending annular head or flange 8.
At the open end of the housing 1, a combined packing gland and water carrying member 9 is located, having a sleeve 10 exteriorly threaded to thread into the open end of the housing 1, and likewise having a much smaller sleeve 11 located within and extending in the same direction as the larger sleeve 10, there being a water conducting passage 12 extending lengthwise of the sleeve 11 and entirely through the gland 9 joining with an opening in a projecting threaded neck 13 at so the outer end of the gland 9 as shown.
The flange or head 8 on the cup '7 extends into the annular opening between the sleeves 10 and 11 and the sleeve 11 projects into the open end of the cup 7. In the annular opening between the sleeves 10 and 11 packing 14 is disposed and it is evident that the packing may be compressed to a greater or less degree by turning the valve stem 4 so as to force the flange 8 against the packing or move it away therefrom. It will be noted that there is a space between the outer side of the sleeve 11 and the inner sides of the cup 7 and also between the outer edges of the flange or head 8 and the inner side of the sleeve 10. These spaces, as shown in the drawing, are exaggerated for purposes of disclosure, but it is apparent that water passes through the passage 12 into the cup 7, goes therefrom to the packing 14, passing slowly therethrough, and thence around the flange or head 8 so that it may pass from the housing 1 through the opening made in the boss 3; and the rate of passage of the water is governed and controlled by the pressure which is put on the packing 14.
The water which flows through the packing 14 is delivered into the open upper end of a drip member 15 screwed into the boss 3 and depending below the same. Integral with the member 15 at its lower end is a head 16 from which a. nozzle 17 projects downwardly. The head 16 and the nozzle have a restricted vertical passage 18 for water which connects with the larger opening in the member 15 as shown.
Between the head 16 and the lower end of the member 15 is an annular groove 19. The upper portion of the head 16 is of convex form whereby a vertical sleeve 20, formed at its lower end with a depending exteriorly threaded neck 21, may be passed at its upper end, over and around the head 16 and thereupon have the upper end spun inwardly into the groove 19 and connect with the grip member yet be freely turnable about the same on its longitudinal vertical axis. This sleeve 20, from a point a short distance above the lower end of the nozzle 1'? downwardly, is formed with opposed elongated slots or openings 23 therein.
The regulating valve construction described is adapted to have a pipe 24 connected with the threaded neck 13, pipe 24 in turn having suitable connection with the water supply so as to carry water under pressure into the cup 7 for passage through the packing 14. Likewise the neck 21 at the lower end of the sleeve 20 is adapted to have a lead-away pipe 25 connected thereto for carrying water to the furnace humidifier. The regulating flow valve accordingly may be mounted at any desired position with reference to the furnace and in practice is preferably mounted near the upper end of the furnace so as to be easily seen and readily accessible for operation. The sleeve 20 may be turned to a position so that the water dripping from the lower end of the nozzle 1'7 can be seen best. The rate of flow of the water is thus easily gauged by sight and the amount of increase or diminishing is also quickly and easily seen so that the regulation of the passage of water to the humidifier is made as sure and easy as possible.
The construction described has proved very practical and serviceable in operation. The holding of the packing 14 between an outer sleeve 10 and an inner rigid member such as the sleeve 11 has made it possible to better control and regulate the passage of water. The construction described is of a practical commercial design and one which has been perfected after long ex periment; and with the drip sight auxiliary thereto it is a construction of exceptional and proven merit. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
1. The combination of a drip member and a hollow sleeve member, said drip member having a nozzle extending downwardly therefrom, means to revolubly mount said hollow sleeve member below and in alinement with said nozzle, said sleeve having an unobstructed opening in its side, the upper end of said opening being in substantially the same horizontal plane as the lower end of the said nozzle.
2. In an inspection device of the character described, a member having a restricted passage of predetermined size therethrough and an encircling groove near the upper end of said restricted passage, and a hollow sleeve provided with unobstructed elongated openings at opposite sides for the purpose described, the upper ends of said openings being substantially even with the discharge end of the said restricted passage and said sleeve having its upper end turned inwardly into engagement in said groove whereby the sleeve is permanently connected to said head and may have turning movements about the same.
