IMPERMEABLE, INCOMBUS TIBLE, INSULATING, AND ACID-PROOF MATERIAL. I
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it nuty concern:
Be it known that l, ULDARIQUE AUons'rE Manon, engineer, a subject of the Kingdom of Belgium, residing in Dieghem, Chateau de Dieghcm, Province of Brabant, Kingdom of Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Im 'wrmcablc, Incombustible, Insulating, and Acid-Proof Materials; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
The invention which forms the object of the present application is a compound of known bodies which by reason of the admixture and chemical reactions under suitable conditions enable to form a new product, the applications of which are both numerous and useful.
The compound is impermeable, incombustible, insulating and acid proof. It is capable of being used for the construction of car riage panels, of partitions for buildings and the like, preserving the coolness in .summer and the heat in winter. In certain forms of construction it can be em loyed very advantageously as a covering onfloors', buildings and so forth. It may also serve for the buildin of shi s, barges, pontoons and so forth w ich are 0th light and" indestructible.
In the domain of electricity it will find'many applications as an insulating material. By reason of its resistance to acids it serves for the manufacture of battery boxes, of vessels for acid products, of conducting pipes for acids and so forth.
The manufacture of this novel product is conducted practically as follows. To ten parts of owdered asbestos which have been previous y heated to a bright redness and which are introduced into a suitable mixing vessel; one part by Weight of protoxid of lead, of binoxid of lead or of binoxidof manganese or of other oxids in suitable quantity is then added and to this three parts of linseed oil and the whole thoroughly mixed. The linseed oil oxidizes and forms at the end of a certain time a aste with the asbestos which can be molded into all kinds of shapes. The substance'is then allowed to cool and the oxidation of the linseed oil continuing causes the product to become harder and more consistent; It is then replaced in the mixing apparatus and there is added a given quantity of alcohol or of ether or a mixture of the two in such proportions that the paste obtained is again sufficiently moist to be worked under suitable conditions having regard to the objects to be formed. The product thus obtained may be forced by pressure or rolling into a metallic cloth, which thus prepared will find many applications in a multitude of branches of industry. The oxidation of' the oil is quickencd by adding a certain quantity of virgin cellulose to the mixture and then submitting the objects manufactured to a high temperature. After this process said objects are practically acid proof against even commercial sulfuric acid. In order to secure them against any'attack the objects manufactured are dipped into dilute sulfuric acid so as to obtain a complete dissolution of the fatty matter. Or a similar or identical result can be obtained by heating the linseed oil to a temperature of about 250 and adding the necessary quantity of oxidizing materlal. claim.
1. The method of producing the described product consisting in heating comminuted asbestos, adding an oxid of a metal thereto, adding and mixing an oleaginous material into theasbestos and oxid to form a paste, cooling the paste, mixing a solvent of oils with the cooled paste, drying the latter, and
washing the dried product in dilute sulfuric acid.
3. The method of producing the described roduct comprising heating comminuted as:
estos, adding an oxid of a suitable metal and an oxidizable oil thereto to form a paste and after the oxidation of the oil has set in and the product rendered harder, mixing therein a vaporizable solvent of the oil.
4. The method ofproducing the described product consisting in heating comminuted asbestos, adding an oxid of a metal thereto, addim and mixing an oleaginous material into the asbestos and oxid to form a paste,
cooling the paste, mixing a solvent of oils With the cooled paste, drying this paste and with the cooled paste, drying the latter, and washing the dried product in dilute sulfuric washing it after drying in dilute sulfuric acid. I acid.
