Be it known that I, OLIN J. (lA-mock, of'
Palmyra, in the county of 'Wayne and Si :de of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in ltod-Paekings, which. improvement is fully set iforth in the l`ollwing speciiication and shown in the ace. In panying drawings.
My invention relates to machinery parkhe kind and class knownand understood as :od packing, and the invention has l'or its object the production of a fibrous slab ol iinprw ed construction and makeup, and. of packing rings formed from such slab.
It is known and 1|-n(lers'{oo l.in the ma". ter of packing reciprocating and vother similar rods, that the fibrous strands or threads ce niposing thepacking rings will wear av-,ay`
more rapidly when the sides of the same are in contact with the rod and subjected to its abrasive action than if the ends of the strands meet the rod. In view of this fact, and other matters, I have produced a slab olE packing material made up of layers or plies of ibrous material, the component strands or threads of which lay in various prearranged -,relative directions, the strands of adjacent layers forming angles varying from 30 .legrees upward, so thatrings cut fronrthe slab will besuch that the ends of substantially all the threads or strands will be direced' against the surface of the rod.
Other objects and advantages of the invenltion will be brought out and made to appear .in the following description, and the novel features particularly pointed out in the ap pended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which, with the reference characters marked thereon, forin a part of this specification.
Figures 1 and 2 represent portions of slabs constructed'im` accordance with my inven- I strands 1 of adjacent layers cross each other at angles varying substantially from sixty to one hundred and twenty degrees, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The layers or plies are so relatively placed that the threads olf the up'- per one, 2, incline to the right, l'or example', those otthe second layer, 3, being horizontal or longitudinal o'l` the slab, while those nll the third layer 4t incline to the lel't. From this it will be understood that a ring, lll, ent -from the slab 1 will have all the thx-@mls ol' toward the inner surface ol' the ring and thus directed against the surface 'of the inclosed rod on six sides, this being clearly seel'l. by the portions oi the layers 2, 3 'and 4 uncovered by breaking away supcrincuinbent parts. The strands 'of the layers below 4 are similarly arranged, those of the layers 5, and 7 being respectively the salne as the strands ol the layers 2,3 and 4, and those of the bottom layer 3 being as in the layer 2. It will also be seen that a ring cut from a slab constructed as shown in Fig. 2 would be practically the same as the ring 14, as to the relative arrangement of the layers and the directions taken by the component threads.
A slab constructed as shown in Fig. 4 has allthe threads ol` ,the adjacent layers 1() to 13 forming angles of ninety degrees and a ring formed from this slab would have the ends of the threads directed against the rod on four sides, as clearly appears in Fig. 6. It will be understood, however, that the eX- act order of the layers, or the relative directions of the threads' of the layers, is not essential to this invention, the main object in producing these improved packing rings being to arrange the component parts so that the ends of the threads or strands shall be directed toward and in contact with the surface of the rod. i 4
The slabs, without regard to internetconstruction, are covered on both 'lat sides with thin layers of india-rubber, 9 and 9', the closed layers of asbestos cloth being joined by rubber cement, and the whole body put under pressure and vulcanized.
