WILLIAM H. MGKEIVER, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS M. HARDY, JE., OF PENDLETON, OHIO.
DOOR OR SASH LOCK.
j No. 853,991.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 21, 1907'.
To all whoml t may concern: i Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MoKEivER, citizen of the United States, residing at Inlianapolis, in the county of Marion and State useful Improvements in Door or Sash Locks, 3f which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a small and convenient device by means of which any door, window-sash, or similar movlng part'may be easily locked, the construction being such that it may be readily operted, and such that it itself may be readily eld against all possible improper moveent.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my vention;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my imroved lock in connection with adjacent portions of a door and door casing; Fig. 2 asimierpective view of my device showin the is)ide pposite to that shown in Fig. 1 ig. 4 an evation in partial vertical section; Fig. 5 a ection on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 a deail showing the positions of the parts when eld against improper movement.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a thin main ody adapted to be inserted between the two arts to be locked, said body at its thin end eing provided with suitable screw holes 11 y which it may be permanently attached to ne of the parts to be locked, desired, and lso provided upon one face with a sharp spud 12 which may be temporarily forced into the door casing or a window-sash.
At the outer end of body 10 I provide a j *pair of ears 13 and 14 which are vertically erforated to receive a threaded shank of the screw 15, said shank passing freely through the perforations of the ears and being axially reciprocable therethrough. Threaded upon screw 15, between the two ears 13 and 14, is a locking head 16, that portion of the head lying between the two ears being considerably thinner than the distance between the ears so that it may be vertically reciprocated between said ears. This locking head 16 is provided with a face 16', parallel with the aXis of screw 15, which face is adapted to engage the inner face of the door 17. Head 16 is provided at its lower inner corner with an upwardly projecting finger 16" whlch hes )f Indiana, have invented certain new andl a sufficient distance from the main body of head 16 to form a vertical notch 16 adapted to receive the main body 10.
Arranged in ear 14, under the end of screw 15, is a spring 18 which normally urges the screw 15 axially upward so that the head 15 thereof lies a distance from the upper face of ear 13 equal to or greater than the vertical depth of the notch 16".
The operation is as follows :-The thin shank of body 10 is inserted between a door 17 and a casing 20, either by forming a recess in theface of the casing for permanent attachment, or by slipping the shank between the door and casing and forcing the door shut, the s ud 12 in this case preventing any withdrawa The door being shut, head 16 is then swung around from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1, and screw 15 is forced downward against the action of spring 18 until finger 16" can be swung beneath the thin projecting portion of body 10, whereupon the face 16 is in engagement with the door, and when the screw 15 is released the head 16 moves upward so that body 10 lies in the notch 16', thus preventing any accidental dis lacement of head 16. If it be desired to lloc head 16 against displacement, the operator has merely to turn screw 15 in head 16, whereupon the head 15 of the screw moves down against the upper face of ear 13 and thus prevents anylongitudinal movement of the screw, and consequently any movement of head 16 to withdraw finger 16 from engagement with body 10.
I claim as my invention;
In a device of the class described, the combination, with the main body having a portion adapted to be inserted between two members to be locked, of a screw axially movable within said main body, a locking head threaded on said screw, and means carried by the locking head for engagement with the main body by relative movement axially of the screw.
In witness whereof, I, have hereunto set my hand and seal at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 1st day of September, A. D. one thousand nine hundred and six.
