Specification of Letters Patent.
ratented May 14, 1907.
A Application llled September 4, 1806. Serial En. 333,199.
.To L15 whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, FRANK I-I. RILE, a. citizen of the United States, residin at Buiiao, in the county of Eriland State o New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention reiates to roof and [ioor sumps and to moans for securing the same in place.
The object of my invention 1s to provide an eilicient and durable snmp, which will ell'eotivvly exclude foreign matter from tho @duction ipe; which may be readily cleaned; and whieli may be readily and woll seen/red to the roof, or lioor.
My invention is not (m13r useful as a roof suino, hntis equally useful as a floor snmp, especially in breweries, slaughter houses, and like places, where floor drainage is desirable.
Referring to the drawings herewith, in
corresponding partsf-Fgure 1 is a plan View of the devine 'in situ-a quarter being in horizontal section just. above the second Strainer. Fig. 2 is a View one-haii in elevation and one-half in vertical central section. Fig. 3 is a detail section in the same plane as the ser-,tion portion of Fig. i2.
The main body, l, is preferably, in the form of a cone frustmn and expan( ed into a vflange at the upper end. A removable cover 2. having perforations 3 in the top and side openings 4 is svatedin an annular seat 5 in the body l by means of a peripheral flange 6. it 'is preferalile that the top of the iange 6 should lie flush with the top of the body l in roof sum s, and in iloor sii-inps the cover would, o course, he flat and lie in the plane of the Hoor.
The bottom ond of the body l is closed in, am' preferably screw threaded, to connect with a east or wrought iron edortinn pipe l2.
Within the body i is plaeed a catch basin 7, which is preferably integral `.with a stand pipe strainer 8, having pvriorations Q. (,)vor the top of the fateli basin 7 is placed a strainer lil, haring perioraiions ll arranged radially and oi increasing size toward iin periphery, so that the hulk ol` the nati-r and any foreign substance of an)v size will mss downwardly (if at all) between thv walis of the catch basin 7 and the mills ol' the stand pipe strainer S and he retained in that sparo.
itwdl non' he seen ihxt the reverser Torixlo v Substances will he kept. ont hy lh vrp 3;i
that smaller particles which may ass through the i'lrst strainer will be stop e by the strainer en, 10; and that the stil finer sediment will Ee arrested and held in the catch basin 7. It will also be seen that the sump is readily eleanvd hy removing the cap 2, the strainer il), and the catch basin 7.
In order to properly secure the sump to the roof or floor I have invented the following means: 13 is a sheet metal lashin .which, upon its edges, is secured to the roo or Hoor material in any desired manner. 14 is a stop which eneireles the sump in the usual Inanner. in order to secure the plate 13 to 'the sump so as to form a perfectly tight and strong pint, I provide in the upper surface of' the flange of the body 1 an annular dovetail groove 15 into which tiie'inner circular edge of the hashing plate i3 is placed by heilig ilanged downwardly and inwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The Adovetail groove is thon filled with molten lead, or other material serving the like purpose, and is iiied iiush with the top surface of the snmp body. This forms a perfectly tight strong joint. This means for securing the sump to the ilashng is an important feature of my invention.
It will, of course, be understood that the particular form and shape and material shown may he Varied without departin the spirit of my invention; and I there ore cio"Y not wish tfo limit myself to the specific eenstruction shown and described, but
That I do claim is:
1. In a sump the combination with the body of a movable catch-basin and Standpipe strainer connected one with the other to form a single removable part, said strainer boing suspended within said basin to form a settling space.
2. In a sump the eondiination with a body of a movable rateh-hasin and stand pipe strainer ronnoi'ied one with the other to form a single removable part, said strainer living rentrnlly vievatrd within said basin to forni an annular settling spore.
15. in a snmp the vomhination with the body oi' o nim-ahh intc'h-hnsin and .sl-nimh pipisi reiner rmmm'ted one with ihr other to forni a single removable part, said catchliasin litiing to thi` walls u the body und said strainer living vvntrally vivi'aied with said inisin lo forni :in :annular seitiing spare.
i ln :i snmp, iho roniiiinaiion willi the {mi} j nl' :i reniovnhlv Arnim-reap, a rinnovable cateh basin and stand pipe strainer, and a removable strainer over said eateh basin and stand pipe having radial perforations increasing outwardly in cross section to throw the foreign matter outside oi' the stand pipe into the catch basin.
5. 1n a sump, in combination with the body in the form of a eone-frustum, a removable strainer cap, a removable catch-basin and stand-pipe strainer, said basin and strainer connected one with the other to form a single removable art, said catch-basin cone-frustum sha e( and fitting to the inner walls of said bo y and its periphery forming a seat for a removable strainer, a removable strainer seated over said basin and centrally elevated Within said basin to form an annular settling space.
6. In a sump, in combination with the body, a flange at the top of said body, a removable slrainer cap itting over said body and an annular groove in the upper face of said Ilange to receive the llanged ed re of sheet metal lltlngflad to receive a illingr to secure said [lange to said flashing.
7. ln a snmp, in combinationwith the body, a llange at the top of said body, a re movable. `strainer eap removably itting over said body, a catch basin and stand pipe strainer removably placed within said body, an annular groove in said flange at the top of said body, to reeeive the llanged edge of {lashing and a filling material, sueh as lead, for securing!` said flange to said llashing.
In testimony whereof, l have hereunto set my hand in the presence ol two witnesses.
FRANK ll. llllilll.
