PORTABLE TENT-FRAME.
Speeieatien of Letters Patent.
Patenten may 14, 1907.
Application filed July 25,190S. Serial No. 327,685,
To al?, when?, it muy ooi-worn'.-
Be it known that l, ltonmrr l". Onu., a citizen ol tile United States, residing at Pleasantville, county of Vl/kistrliester, and Stato of New York, llave invented fortain new and useful improvements in Portable Tent-Frames, fully dosni'ibed and represented in the following spwilifation and tbe aeeoo'ipanying drawings, forming a part of the saine.
Une object of this invention is to furnish a portable tent traine with a board `lloor which, when supported upon the ground, is held b Y the structure above the level ol' the ground, and the spare beneatli a great part of the :floor Wholly ouin-Closed and open to tlie circulation of air. This object is attained by sup orting the posts and rafters wholly upon t 1e edges of the lloor, and sustaining the iloor itself upon two sills which are attaelied to the ioor intermediate to the edges, at a suitable distanee apart to 'Ht between the stakes of ordinary wagon holsters, so that tlie entire structure can be mounted upon the running-gear of an ordinary wagon, and not only transported from place to place, but occupied and used While upon suoli running-goar- The longitudinal sills are sooured edgewise to the floor, so as to forni a space of suitable depth which when inolosed at the bottoni forms an excellent store closet, which may be reached by a trap-door through the floor and also by doors applied between the ends of the sills.
Tire structure is suited for use in tire field by soldiers, engineers, or by parties camping out either for health or pleasure, and it may also be used contiguous to a dwelling house Where there is Vsuilioient ground or spaoe to accommodate the struoture; and in suoli latter ease it may be used by inmates of the dwelling to house an invalid, The structure is also adapted to receive removable panels to exclude cold or rain during inclement Weather. v
The invention will be understood by reiA erenoe to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective View of the tentframe Fig. 2 1s a transverse section; and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is an end View with the running gear.
a designates the iioor Wliioli consists of cross boards nailed permanently to longitudinal sills b which are set edgewise so as to raise the lloor l0 or 12 inches above the ground. Posts c are extended upward from tlio lloor along its edges, and ral'teis d are extended inward therefrom and eonnoeted together at the peak and to a ridge-pole h4 Skirt boards e (soonest the posts together at tlio base to keep tlieln vreet, and railsfeonnoot the posts together at the top.
Triangular tie-plates g are attarlicd to tlie joint oi the rafters to stillen tlie saine and prevent tliein from spreading apart. bottoms ol the sills are oonnertod by cross boards L and the space thus formed is closed with hinged and looked doors i and ,i at the oiposite ends, thus forming a secure store closet for the use of the initiates. The boards li forni a bottom to the closet when tlie sills are sustained upon tlle bolster ol a wagon, and when the sills rest upon the ground they protect the inner space from the of rain and vermin,
The projection of the floor beyond the sills at opposite sides, as shown in Fig. 2, exposes the under side of the iioor to ventilation, and thus protects it from danipnoss when the tent frame is supported upon the ground.
When the tent frame is supported upon a Wagon running-gear, the depth of the bolsters supports the floor and its rejecting portions above the tops of the o.
A trap door l: affords assess to the closet troni the inside of the tent.
ln Figs. 2 and 3, the different parts are shown jointed together by bolts Z having nuts fm. by which the parts can be readily detached or separated for aoking and storage when not in use. A bo ster in of an ordinal` f box Wagon is shown beneath the frame in ig. 4, wit-l1 the usual stakes o near its opposite ends between which the closet ortion of the strueture can be set upon the olster, and an axle p is shown jointed to the bolster in the usual manner with Wheels g upon its opposite ends.
A canvas cover 1 is shown over the tentfraine with Cords s extended to the ground and secured by tent pegs 1,.
By diseonneotin g the separable parts of tbe frame, the whole may be readily transported to any desired place, as it may be readily erected and mounted, with its canvas erover upon the bolsters of any ordinary farm Wagon, and transported by the running gear of suoli Wagon.
By retaining the running gear under the tent-frame While in use, it may be used upon a lawn during the season Without any injury to the grass of the lawn, as only the Wagon Wheels Would Contact with the grass, and the The IOO
elevation of the tent above the ground would wholly avoid anyY dainpness.
A board lloor for a tent olY eonrl'ortable size is much larger than the bodyY oi' an ordinary farm wagon and eould not be supported upon the bolsters ol' the wagon without interfering with the wheels; but the extension of the sills l) downwardly lroin the lloor operates not only to raise the lloor above the ground ilE set thereon, but adapts the sills to support the tent-frame above the holsters ol' a wagon so that it could be transported theleon.
The structure thus serves the purposes of a portable house, but inuch cheaper and lighter, while it also furnishes a tent which is less liable to be overset or deranged b v wind, than a structure supported upon incre poles.
A detachable panel u, is shown fitted between the posts adacent to the rails and skirting; and all the spaces may be filled with such panels when required,` to protect the inmates when occupying the tent late in the season, or when subjected to unusual cold and wet.
Having thus set forth the nature offthe invention what is clainied herein is:
l. A portable tent frame provided with a board Hoor, posts and rafters secured together and supported wholly upon the edges of the Hoor, and longitudinal sills secured edgewise to the loor beneath the saine, intermediate to the edges, at a suitable distance apart to it the bolsters of a wagon running-gear, the space between the sills being inclosed beneath to forni a store closet.
2. A portable tent lranie provided with a board lloor, posts and rafters secured together and supported wholly upon. the edges of the lloor, and longitudinal sills secured edgewise to the lloor beneath the salue intermediate to the edges, at a suitable distance apart to 'it the holsters ol a Wagon runninggear, the space between the sills boing inclosed beneath to forni a store closet, and the lloor having a trap-door leading into such closet, and the space between the ends ofthe sills being provided with a door L for external access to such space.
A portable tent lralne provided with a board lloor, posts and rafters secured detaehabl)v together to hold the tent cover and supported wholly upon the edges of the floor, skirt-boards held detaehablv to the posts for keeping them erect, longitudinal sills perinanentlv secured edgewise to the floor beneath the saine intermediate to the edges, at a suitable distance apart to lit the bolsters of a running-gear, holsters n fitted transversely to the sills with stakes 0 embracing the outer sides olE the sills, and Wheels with running-gear litted to the holsters, to render the tent frame movable from space to space at pleasure.
In testimonyY whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
